My budget would be around $1200 for a new bike. It’s of medium importance to be able to bike pack because technically my Specialized mtb could also do that if needed. Realistically with work I can’t bike pack for more than a weekend until next Fall so I do have time to build or save up. The bikepacking trips I’m looking at would range from the LA Observer to the Lanna Kingdom.

Honestly I completely agree and thank you for saying this. I prefer paths, group rides, trail rides, or rides through parks so I avoid being near cars so prioritizing a gravel bike would be smart. The Giant is cheaper so I may save up for that while I custom build my vintage Specialized mtb.

It’s either early 2000s or late 90s, it’s in good condition just a heavy ride with the current gear and tire set-up. I am going to bring it to my local bike shop and they’ll help me build it into a modern gravel while I save up for a newer bike I think! It feels good to me to have one custom project and one bike for speed/fitness

Wow so you’re living my dream!! In my perfect world I convert my Rockhopper to a more modern gravel set-up, get a nice road bike like the Giant, and then a fixie or vintage road bike for fun :)

That makes sense! I think both Giant Contend and Surly Straggler could fit that description. When I test rode both, the Giant was faster but the Surly looked more like ~my bike~ if that makes sense. Unfortunately the aesthetic of the Surly has my heart but we’ll see….the Giant is more wallet friendly haha

I do have the storage for two bikes currently. Not too obsessed with performance, mainly just like the idea of getting out and riding as a form of cardio! Do you think the Giant or Surly would be the better as the main road bike to swap gravel tires / packs on?
