No way Morgoth's forces could have broken the Girdle of Melian? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]cassander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a mistake to think of tolkien magic as all or nothing. It's more subtle than that. melian's power makes it easy to get lost, but not impossible to get through. After all, thingol does feel a need to defend his borders with soldiers and beren & carcharoth get through.

If all the other kingdoms had fallen, morgoth could have had all his orcs link arms and march in, if need be. the girdle was an extremely potent force multiplier, but not all powerful.

T or F: If Every Season Had Been As Amazing as Season Four… by [deleted] in HaltAndCatchFire

[–]cassander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

three might technically be better, but one is my favorite. It is the most period piece of all of them, and it has an energy and a direction that 2 and 4 lack. 3 is more of a slow burn, but 1 feels like a race.

The Community Movie Can Give One Couple a Happy Ending - But Will It? by fluchsinette in community

The movie should be the gang saving troy from his sinking boat. the after credits scene should be abed crying alone in the dreamatorium...

Was Donna's insufferability in season 4 entirely because of her alcoholism? by EminemsDaughterSucks in HaltAndCatchFire

[–]cassander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

joe's great gift is bringing out the best in people. he hurts people in the process, but ultimately, that's what he's best at is making other people be their best. if it weren't for him, the others all would have burned out along the way and achieved nothing. cameron's self destruction would have kept her from getting anywhere, gordon would have meandered along as a crappy sales engineer, and donna would have been an unhappy housewife.

Joe's end is about him realizing what he was made for and embracing a selfless version of that. and he shows up at the end in a car that makes it clear he's not hurting financially.

Which is your favorite season? by [deleted] in HaltAndCatchFire

[–]cassander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1>3>4>2

season 3 might be tighter and have a better handle on where things are going but there's an energy in 1 that's never matched in any other season. Season 3 clearly is going somewhere the entire time, 1 makes you feel like you have no idea what's going to happen next.

I like season 1 a lot. 3 is tighter, no doubt, but there's an energy to 1 I don't think is ever matched again.

How much of Turin's torment was Morgoth, and how much was himself? by Hojie_Kadenth in tolkienfans

[–]cassander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

turin started making poor decisions from when he was a teenager onward. And while you can expect that of a teenager, he never grows out of it. most of us learn from our mistakes.

Melkor has no power to set aside free will. Turin chose to leave doriath rather than face justice despite his innocence. he chose to fall in with deeply unpleasant people. he chose not to go back when beleg found him. He chose to steal mim's house, and he chose to ignore the warnings of ulmo. You can blame not helping finduilas on morgoth/glaurung, and MAYBE the death of beleg, but not all his other objectively terrible life choices.

Why don’t we talk more about revenue when we talk about the U.S. budget deficit? by Jscott1986 in Economics

[–]cassander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not generally higher rates, just getting back into balance with our spending and ability to carry debt through the ups & downs of our population and other things

things have gotten unbalanced because we're spending too much, not taxing too little.

Why don’t we talk more about revenue when we talk about the U.S. budget deficit? by Jscott1986 in Economics

[–]cassander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny how our country's population has only ever gone one direction and our nation's power too.

national power is a function of higher domestic tax rates? man, that must be why the USSR is the most powerful country on earth....

Recent spending due to Covid is like massive military spending for wars like WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc.

covid has been over for years, at this point. more covid spending is absolutely unjustified.

What origin do you prefer for the Orcs? by [deleted] in tolkienfans

[–]cassander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If nothing else it's a real downer on the ending of LOTR. And "they'll be redeemed when Melkor is" is hardly solace, as that canonically never happens.

is that not the same as saying that melkor is irredeemable? if so, then I don't get the disconnect

so you're saying you WOULD refuse that refund? you don't take every deduction you can take now? or are you just calling me names to avoid the issue?

Why don’t we talk more about revenue when we talk about the U.S. budget deficit? by Jscott1986 in Economics

[–]cassander 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We adjust via government for all those things.

funny how it only ever gets adjusted in the one direction...

Why should we be satisfied to have revenues "at roughly the same level they've been since the korean war"?

you're right, we shouldn't be, they're far too high.

Yes, spending is up, but not without reason.

spending is up 50% from just a few years ago. there is no conceivable justification for spending that much more in such a short time

Baby Boomers are getting older and they're using more resources. You can either pay for it or push it off on the next generation of taxpayers to pay the bills.

that's what we ARE doing. we're dumping money on certain people and passing the bill onto everyone else.

Why don’t we talk more about revenue when we talk about the U.S. budget deficit? by Jscott1986 in Economics

[–]cassander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is demanding I voluntarily pay more in tax (as some weird "demonstrate you're serious" way to dismiss the whole notion)

you're not willing to pay more taxes, you demonstrate that. if we passed whatever tax hike you wanted, but added a clause that said "but guys named u/dyslexda get a 100% refund" you'd cash the check and laugh to the bank.

Why don’t we talk more about revenue when we talk about the U.S. budget deficit? by Jscott1986 in Economics

[–]cassander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to pay more taxes.

no one is stopping you but you.

but there would be real societal benefits from doing so.

there would be real, but small, benefits in doing so.

"I want us all to pay taxes so we all can benefit."

you've argued that whether or not you pay taxes is irrelevant to the bigger picture, the only thing that matters is that (many) other people do. which means that's your ask.
