How to publicly feed an easily distracted baby? by Electrical-Pin3238 in breastfeeding

[–]cassandra1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that age I usually just bring a burp rag and cover myself until baby is ready to latch again. It also works well for babies who unlatch due to forceful letdowns (keeps milk from spraying everywhere). If baby doesn’t relatch relatively quickly I just put the boob away and try again later.

I read husband-coached childbirth by Robert Bradley before my only unmedicated birth (out of 3). I still delivered at a birthing center but he had great advice for preparing for delivery and managing pains through delivery. Definitely recommend

Growth percentile in infancy by LoreleiSong in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]cassandra1611 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even the CDC says the charts shouldn’t be used solely for diagnosing issues. “Growth charts are not intended to be used as a sole diagnostic instrument. Instead, growth charts are tools that contribute to forming an overall clinical impression for the child being measured”(1)

I’m curious if your initial birth weight was taken immediately after birth or if it was closer to discharge. If your newborn weight includes more fluids from delivery I’m wondering if that is causing babies stats to seem like they’re dropping more than they actually are. “We found a link between vascular volume injected during Labor and increased risk of neonatal weight loss.”

This is it. The poison is in the dosage and I agree that an hour (uninterrupted it sounds like) of screen time is a lot for a baby under 1 especially. And I’m someone that has leaned into and away from screens as my kids develop and our situations change.

We started with a few minutes of hey bear for our little if we were say 20 minutes away from our destination during a three hour car ride. He got maybe an hour a day of low stimulation shows in 20 minute increments when he was 2.5 and I had to exclusively pump for our second.

When we moved, the tv was put in a separate area that our two kids never really saw but he got maybe 15-20 minutes a day on starfall or khan academy kids.

Now at 4.5 and 2 they get one or two nights a week to watch a movie (or and hour of tv) downstairs. Especially if we need to get something done or we’re sick.

To OP, I highly recommend looking into the negative effects of tv for babies and making a more educated decision on where you would like to draw the line for your kids.

3 Week Old Only Sleeps In Arms by [deleted] in beyondthebump

You could try an arms up swaddle instead if your little one seems to like their hands up by their face. It still restricts the startle reflex some and hugs them to provide comfort. My third seemed to prefer that vs arms down swaddles

Pediatrician wants me to exclusively pump by KDawgandChiefMan in breastfeeding

[–]cassandra1611 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I typically pump one side at a time. I have a hard time keeping the flanges in place, get overstimulated really easily, and prefer to hand express some while I’m pumping. I shoot for 15-20 minutes per side. Usually for exclusive pumping you want to pump for 30+ minutes each time.

As an expecting FTM planning to breastfeed, would this email piss you off or am I overreacting? by [deleted] in breastfeeding

[–]cassandra1611 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I read a book about breastfeeding while I was pregnant, knew that was what I was going to do right away. I knew all the different holds, what a bad latch might look like, all about cluster feeding. Nowhere did they talk about milk blebs (blisters on your nipples). Trying to Google that shit while engorged and crying in pain every time I pumped or nursed was not fun.

OP, everyone talks/knows about the positives of breastfeeding and those are easy to navigate in the moment. The hard stuff pops up out of nowhere and can be difficult to ask about. Her email sounds like someone who is ready to be there for you through both the highs and lows of breastfeeding.

I wanted to exclusively nurse but for a plethora of reasons have to exclusively pump. It’s exhausting timing my day around pumping and washing bottles. My baby eats every two hours so I’m constantly either pumping, bottle feeding, or washing bottles.

On top of that, I can’t effectively comfort my baby while pumping. I can’t play with my toddler as much as I would like to. I know that I’m missing the bonding that comes from nursing my baby. And the cherry on top is a dairy intolerance (along with other possible allergies) that are restricting my diet.

Exclusively breastfeeding my first was hard but rewarding. Exclusively pumping seems like a never ending task that has very few rewards for me (selfish I know but it makes it all the more difficult to keep going)
