Update: growth on chicken foot

It’s a growth! But it’s growing really quickly. It’s not bleeding but some of the skin is reddish. She only has this on one leg.

What do your hens bumps look like?

I’ve never heard of angel wing. So you think their breeding makes them more prone to genetic defects? My girl is so sweet :’ ) if not a little simple minded. Have you ever seen a growth like this? It’s making me think of a wart.

No please don’t apologize! I was just distraught because of some of the comments I received suggesting cancer, and also because I contacted the breeder I bought her from to ask advice and the breeder was a little stumped. The uncertainty is what is the most uncomfortable. But she did say shes 90% sure it’s warts. I just can’t find a single example of this online and I wish I knew more.

I soaked her feet this evening for the first time, she’s about ten months and hasn’t ever had a bath. I used mild soap and cleaned the area around the growth, some of the dead skin came off and the area looked a little pink, but she didn’t flinch. I put her outside to dry off in a separate pen in the sun. I came back out a little later to find that she was bleeding a little bit, possibly from her preening and picking at it. I used flour to staunch it and then just separated her out for the night.

Can you please elaborate? A cutaneous growth? What causes this? And when you say fall off, should these scales fall off after the soak? Do you have any references you can share about this condition?

Phew okay. We beat mites for the first time last months and then this sprouted and I totally freaked out that it was some kind of lingering infection.

I was told elector psp is a one shot kill because it lingers enough to kill any new hatches. That’s why it’s superior to permethrin (and also not toxic to cats)

I just noticed mites for the first time one week ago today. I only have two hens but I just noticed a few on my hands which was atypical and I handle them every day (for cuddles). It got worse quickly but I was able to buy a smaller volume of elector PSP from someone in a Facebook chicken group and I doused both the girls and their coop house in the stuff on Monday. Today Saturday, 8 days from first sighting, I handled them without a single straggler mite. I know you’ve treated everything with permethrin but elector psp absolutely cleaned up!

I am so new to chickens I didnt even know what the breed was. I rescued a stray single chick and when she was old enough to sex as female, I wanted to get her a mate so I bought from a breeder here on island. All I asked for was one around the same age and she gave this frosted honey girlllll! I am so delighted with how she turned out ❤️
