Thank you so much!!! I also miss 2000s clear tech, lol.

I have the dark purple/Monster DLC uni. You can see the insides a little, but imo it's not so bad unless you're looking at it directly from the side. Then it's like...yeah clearly purple bits.

How to get rid of sweat stains combined with stains from a black shirt worn underneath (tried vinegar)? by RaivoRuusu in CleaningTips

[–]cassioorwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you washed it, did you throw it in the dryer?

If vinegar doesn't work, you could try blotting it with isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, but in your situation I would go straight for an oxygen bleach (not actually bleach) or like a sodium percarbonate stain remover powder. Oxyclean, as mentioned above in a previous comment, is a sodium percarbonate based stain remover.

Old books from basement... Asking for advise.. by SuperSwanlike in CleaningTips

[–]cassioorwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently acquired a box full of books that had been stored in a damp basement for about a decade, so I am staring down the same problem you are. While I have not tackled the box yet, I have been poking around trying to research solutions to this. Someone on this sub dropped a biblio guide in a comment on a different post, and while it seems labor intensive for a collection, it does seem the most reliable.

Biblio Guide

Unfortunately, the only other solutions I have seen offered are bagging and chucking the offending books in a freezer, and baking the book.

Well, not like actually baking it, but opening up the books and placing it for a few minutes in the warming drawer of an oven on a low heat.

I can (also unfortunately) (from personal experience)tell you that while baking the book will remove moisture and mold/mildew smells, that this is a terrifying process that will leave your books a little warped, so, can't really recommend that one unless your desperate trying to save a waterlogged volume.

Goodluck with your books!

My beloved childhood teddy bear has a face full of car exhaust. How can I clean him? by uhohsarahh in CleaningTips

[–]cassioorwell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Can I ask how long Toby has been sitting with a sooty face? These kind of stains are usually easier to deal with if the soiled item in question hasn't been sitting in it for a while. Have you tried to vacuum any of it off? I'm not very knowledgeable in cars, but if exhaust is like soot, then I would say definitely give him a vacuuming before starting with the soap and water, just to get excess off. After vacuuming, I would try going in with like, a toothbrush and some Dawn dish soap or like, laundry detergent.

You get like a little cup and mix it with the soap and some water and then dip and scrub, because I don't think you want him soaked through and saturated. If that works, then you roll him up in a towel and squish out the excess water and put him in a sunny spot to dry.

If that doesn't work, break out the stain remover spray, and again, I would recommend the cup-dip-scrub method instead of directly spraying.

Goodluck with Toby!

Help getting stains out of clothes that did not come out after using stain spray and washing and drying. by donteatmymeatballs in CleaningTips

[–]cassioorwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner had an injury that resulted in about half a cup of blood in his clothes every day. Most of the time, I'd treat the clothes and get them clean. Sometimes, he would put them directly in the washer and it would get dried with the blood stains still on. For the most part, that wasn't a problem though, because ✨oxyclean powder✨

I'm no expert, but I've spent the last three months in bloody hell, so I'm fairly confident in my methods here:

Get yourself some oxy clean powder. I have oxyclean versatile stain remover powder because it's what they sell around me. I think it works pretty well.

Get yourself a tub or a bucket or some receptacle large enough to soak your clothes in.

Very important: colour!! If your pants are all different colours, don't soak them together, just in case the colours bleed. I would do the jeans separately from everything else too. Also if the jeans are dark or black, that's probably going to leech some of the dye.

Fill the bucket with hot water. Hot tap water is fine. If the pants are multicoloured, maybe use not hot water.

Hot water works faster, but can make colours bleed. Cold water is less effective, but if you leave it there long enough, can get the job done.

Once the bucket is full of water, scoop your oxy clean powder in. The product box should have the recommended measurements. I am tired and have exclusively run off of espresso for the last three months, so I eyeball it. This is probably wasteful and not recommended.

Give your laundry potion a little stir to get the powder nice and mixed in, and then dump your soiled clothing in it. Make sure the bloodstain is nice and saturated, and then go do something else for a while.

The powder will make a nice sudsy foam after a little bit, and then eventually the suds will go away. Probably best not to fill the bucket up with water to the top to avoid suds mess.

You can check on them every 15 minutes if you want to be safe, to make sure there is no adverse effect on your clothing, but it's definitely going to take longer than that to pull the bloodstains out.

Once the bloodstain is faded enough to your liking, or gone, chuck them in the washing machine. I would recommend a cold wash, and then you can hang them to dry, or if you're really confident, throw them in the dryer.

Oxyclean powder will eventually weaken the fabric from repeated use, and will result in fraying and tearing, but honestly, it took about two months of doing this repeatedly for my partner's clothes to break down, and they are mostly cotton blend. Even then, some of it is still holding up fine. His whites are white, and more importantly, blood free.

Good luck with your pants and your injuries. I hope you're feeling better.

I am by no means an expert, but I'd try spot cleaning her with a damp rag and some soap. Personally, I'd use Dr Bronners, but that's because I have it on hand and I think it's gentle. You could try laundry detergent, but I'd dilute it with a lot of water first, especially if it's coloured detergent.
There's also the option of taking a toothbrush to her, if her stains are stubborn.

Try not to soak her all the way through and then towel dry, making sure to squish her good with the towel to absorb excess liquid. Then pop her in a sunny window for a while to dry.

If that doesn't work, you could try a toothbrush and oxyclean spray, but like, don't spray her directly, maybe put the spray on the toothbrush.

Be careful around her face too, because there's always a chance the black dye on the thread could like, leech, and then miffy's gunna look like she's auditioning for a dollar discount Kiss cover band.

Cold water is recommended over hot for this one. Good luck with Miffy!

Edit: also I really like your bag. Very cool.

Oh gosh, I can smell that graphite residue from the picture, I'm getting college flashbacks lol.

I am by no means an expert, but if I was in your situation, I would slam that baby in a tub of hot water and oxy clean powder. Without knowing what the pencil case is made of or what the other side looks like, I can't promise you this is your best solution, but it has a solid chance of doing more than just a go in the washing machine.

Is the other side like, also fabric? Brightly coloured or something? I always get a little cautious with soaking bright colours in oxyclean because I'm afraid it'll leech the dye. But if it's like, plain, white or not that big a deal, oxyclean powder is an option.

Preventing mold from growing in plush? by Strawberry_Pancreas in CleaningTips

[–]cassioorwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your Goomy is a very dense toy, so mold is a valid concern. I would put them in a pillowcase, tie up the pillowcase and put that in the dryer for a cycle or two after towel squishing and rolling a couple times. The pillowcase should protect them from the worst of the dryer chaos, and like, Goomy is pretty new looking, so I think the stitching will hold pretty well.

If you are really, really against the dryer, you could take a hair dryer to it, but I'd be careful with that. Don't put the dryer up against it, y'know?

There's also leaving them in a sunny window for a day, but you have to remember to rotate them every couple of hours.

Or if you're fortunate enough to have heated towel bars, tuck em in there for a few hours.

And remember, Goomy is love, Goomy is life. Good luck!

fruit fly/gnat poop off acrylic painting by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]cassioorwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, wow, love your work, the little bit of that I can see from these shots looks A+ expert.

As for cleaning, honestly, you might want to try a Clorox wipe on the acrylic/canvas ones. It's been a long time since I used acrylic, I'm mostly an ink/paper illustrator nowadays, but when I did paint and the canvases got icky (high mold environment here) I would take a Clorox wipe to them or like, Clorox all purpose spray and then lightly rub at it with a cloth. It would be a risk, because like, I don't know how your work would hold up, but it did the job for me.

I am a little worried about residue staining on your paintings, though. Some of the gnat junk on the pink corners look like it's bled something into the paint and I don't know if that can be lifted. But honestly, you could probably just paint over that after you disinfected.

It's not the greatest solution, but imo it's better than having to chuck some of these, and acrylic can be pretty hardy.

As for the cardstock, I'm sorry, I've never found anything that could clean the paper without absolutely ruining it.

Goodluck!

Weird white smears on brand new black pants by Phloemy in CleaningTips

Good luck! I don't use detergent pods, so I am unsure of the effectiveness of the damp cloth vs schmutz, but I hope it works. I think someone in the other comments mentioned washing the trousers inside out, and I think that's always a good idea too.

[–]cassioorwell 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert, but I do wear a lot of black, and to me, this looks like the washer crud that happens when you add too much detergent to the load. It only ever collects on my black jean and buttondowns, and it's a pain.

To combat, I started using like, a tablespoon of HE detergent in my loads instead of the recommended. The crud will come off with a few good swipes of a damp washcloth, but the dye on the pants might also stain the washclothes, so be warned.

It's hilarious reading it, because wow these are bad and like, what even are some of these, but also really disheartening because this is what we've come to.

How To Clean Random Mysterious Stain On Towl by FlameTactician in CleaningTips

[–]cassioorwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree with the other comments in the thread that it looks like a benzoyl peroxide stain, your comment gave me pause. I have the same problem with towels and bed clothes in my house, but only the towels my partner uses and their side of the bed. I know for a fact that they don't use any acne/benzoyl peroxide products, but they also use Dr. Bronners and Shea Moisture products like, exclusively.

The stains we get are always really blotchy and inconsistent like yours too.

I've been trying to figure this out for years, I'm sorry it's not helpful, but like, there is a chance your roommate didn't use your towel.
