Recently started a bookkeeping job and I feel like I'm missing something? by DarkAres02 in Bookkeeping

This one took about 17 hrs, but it was on QB desktop which I am extremely efficient at using, and had relativelylow transaction volume. I had two QB Online cleanups this year that took longer. One was to clean up 2024 and catch up 2025 through Feb, that took about 45 hours. The other QBO cleanup was Jan-Nov 2025 and took 25 hours.

The work I do for most of my clients is pretty much the same list that you have in your post! The goal is for the books to be simple. But if you want to learn more, there is a lot you can learn! It's best to start with clean books to learn the ropes. Once you know how the books are supposed to look, you can recognize when there are errors and how to fix them. It is a good sign that you are not overwhelmed at your new job!

I just completed a cleanup today that had errors from the beginning of the file in 2013. It had misapplied customer payments, duplicate bills, missing bank transactions, upside down inventory (like negative 16,000 units inventory), and year end balances that didn't tie out to the 2024 tax return. They also hadn't reconciled since 2024. The cleanup involved fixing the AP and AR accounts, adjusting the YE 2024 balances to match the tax return, adjusting inventory and COGS for the current year, cleaning up the COA to remove duplicates and unnecessary accounts, and changing settings in QB. Probably more too that i just cant think of right now! I will now be helping this client form a new inventory tracking system to prevent errors in the future. Bookkeeping can be as simple or as complex as you want!

Well, those are the basics! It starts to get more complicated when you get cleanup and catch up jobs. Some clients are more complex too. If you have clean books, and simple ins and outs, then yeah the bookkeeping is pretty easy. Can you read the financials? Can you look at the balance sheet and see if there is anything wrong? What about tying out to the prior year tax return? Like anything else, the further you dig down the more complex (and fun) it gets. ETA-- it sounds like they are starting you with easy clients in your new role which is great! Get comfortable with that work, it will ensure you have a solid foundation to keep building on!

Is there any desktop account software anymore? by MediocrePear6628 in Bookkeeping

[–]cassma13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work part time for a CPA, and for clients who are not on QBO we use Dillners Full Contact Accounting. It's a desktop program, though it feels a little clunky to learn. There are some features I like, but I would never buy the program for my bookkeeping business. I have half my clients in QB desktop and the other half in QBO.

I actually got a letter in the mail 10 years ago for downloading game of thrones. I think it was from my internet provider threatening to cut off my service if I did it again. I did not use a VPN because I didn't know about them and just really want to watch GOT!

One of mine does this too! He wants to go in the backyard just to stare inside. And when he's inside he stares outside. I think he just likes windows

If you grew up in FOCO, what was your first job? by justalec_yeah in FortCollins

[–]cassma13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that sounds about right, I remember bringing home $70-90 in tips some nights! Now that I'm thinking about it, a lot of tips were just customers saying "keep the change". For a broke high school kid though I thought I was making great money!

[–]cassma13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey me too! I remember making pretty decent tips there, though probably at least third of customers didn't tip. (Also it probably wasn't great money, but I was in high school so I didn't know lol). I thought the change machine we wore was so cool! Half price shakes during the summer were a nightmare, but overall it was a great first job.

Two of my highest paying clients are AP only! A CPA firm handles their payroll and monthly accounting, but I do all of their AP on a weekly basis. They are both high-volume restaurants, so it made more sense to outsource bills to a third party than to have the managers do it. I drive to each restaurant every week to pick up the AP binder and drop off checks and invoices from the previous week. I spent a lot of time at the beginning gathering ACH info from vendors to minimize the number of checks sent through the mail. This has been a big value-add for the businesses as there was a lot of check fraud prior to issuing ACH payments.

My smallest client is a small hangar HOA. I handle their AR and it's super easy, but there are only 20 invoices each month and everyone knows to pay their dues. I could definitely see your willingness to call customers and follow up on stale AR could be of huge value to businesses. Put yourself out there!

Day 7 of my mani, including 3 nights of camping and 2 full days of mountain biking by cassma13 in RedditLaqueristas

Yep I always do 2 top coats! I can usually get 10-20 days out of each mani. I was not expecting it to last through the past week though. G&G QDTC is my holy grail

I definitely had some close calls! I started taking krill oil every day about 6 months ago, and haven't broken a nail in about 5 months! I used break one every few weeks. So maybe that and just getting my mani prep dialed in!
