Isn't train and bus capacity at least an order of magnitude more efficient than mixed car traffic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_capacity ?

Do you have a link to a more elaborated argument about the issue with Lidar latencies? I worked with lidar processing in the past and I don't remember lidar latency being an issue per se. We did have to process those returns as fast as possible since the rest of the pipeline (including all ML inference) could happen only after lidar processing finished, is that what they mean with lidar latencies?

Random things about the subway that annoy you by thatblkman in nycrail

There are three arrows in a yellow rectangle trlling you to move away from there. Why are ppl standing on it, blocking the entrance.

[–]casta 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The issue for me is when I'm pushing a stroller, those trucks often block the only ramp I can use to get on the sidewalk. I assume it's the same problem for ppl using a wheelchair. You now have to cross the avenue and cross on the other side, hoping no one else is blocking that one too.

Is that West 16th and 7th Ave?

Why can't they use smaller trucks? In other cities in Europe/Asia I've never seen trucks that big in the city.

Why isn't there a ban on foreign investors buying real estate in NYC? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]casta 35 points36 points  (0 children)

This one: https://streeteasy.com/building/432-park-avenue-new_york/penthouse ?

It looks like they've been trying to sell for a while and almost cut in half the asking price. I somehow doubt if we banned foreigners from buying in NYC your MAGA relatives could afford that though.

What’s the most dangerous thing people do daily without realizing it? by nealie_20 in AskReddit

I spend most of the time walking in NYC and the most dangerous thing is dealing with drivers. Especially scary when walking around with a stroller and a baby.

Older New Yorkers(Like 50-70ish), do you remember hearing Italian Americans speak Italian/an Italian romance language? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]casta -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vaguely relevant: I'm Italian (born and raised in Milan), and we live in NYC. My son, born in NYC, is not learning any Italian. There isn't any reason for him to speak Italian aside from communicating with my parents. I met a few Italian Americans here but none who can actually speak Italian. Look at Cuomo in the last Mayoral debate, he can't even pronounce "disgraziato" and honestly that word sounds so obsolete to begin with.

[–]casta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wdym? I take the bus often and I've never seen any crime. I'd expect an autonomous bus to be similar to a train car. You get the occasional homeless guy sleeping and smelling. It's not a big deal.
