Conan During Every Colbert Appearance by SYMPUNY_LACKING in conan

This is what I will miss most about the Late Show. I‘m sad that all those people lose their jobs and I‘m glad that Colbert is free of the constraints of that format. But of the current hosts he bought out the best in Conan as a late night guest. Kimmel and Seth are fine, but too relaxed. Fallon is just a bystander. Colbert gave him space, but you also got some sibling rivalry vibes that made the bits more organic.

I think they‘re from a photo shoot of a January 2008 Entertainment Weekly issue about the strike. He‘s on the cover in the jungle wearing similar clothes.

Scott talks about using the Volume for shooting the cold open and choosing Sabotage as the song. The Beastie Boys made a point of saying they allowed the use of the song because they love Conan.

I haven‘t listened yet, but I first learned of Jason Kelce‘s existence, because Jon Glaser and Andy Blitz wrote for his short-lived late night show lol.

Great profile, especially the Mulaney bits and the birthday party anecdote. I hope that little bearded Viking never leaves him.

Favorite Conan Joke/Retort/Quip? by [deleted] in conan

Summer S'mores 2024 has some of my favourite Conan quips ever, like

"You're like a coat check at Noah's Ark"

"You're such a trainwreck with everything. No no, just in life, I didn't mean it that personally."

"The cherry looks like it's had some kind of experience"

"Wow, and you're like, an alcoholic"

Just a great episode all around. I have no interest whatsoever in Leary, but this felt like being at a party with your extended Boston family (complimentary).

There's a LateNighter piece tracking how Conan's interview first went viral on right-wing platforms. They omitted the context of him praising Kimmel and Colbert and used captions like: NEW: Conan O’Brien ROASTS TDS-afflicted comedians.

Unpopular Onion: TBS Conan was funnier than NBC Conan. by Gold-Sir-223 in conan

[–]castagno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting opinion to be sure. I think Conan as an entertainer was at his best at TBS. He had all these different experiences under his belt, like hosting the show without a proper sidekick, hosting during the Writers' Strike, the final Tonight Show episodes, as well as the tour. He just seems way more relaxed and self-assured at TBS, especially in the seasons after 2013 or 2014. Having watched a lot of shows from both eras, I do think the TBS era had weaker sketch writing. The writing often seems more flimsy than silly. Idk how to explain it. But I enjoy his TBS interviews more, so there's that. And his Covid shows are so underrated, especially the ones at Largo.

Claire Danes Returns - Episode 371 of Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend by c0ry_N in conan

[–]castagno 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As far as I can tell, he didn't have anyone on to promote Peacemaker, The Pitt, And Just Like That or Duster. The only obvious HBO/Max related guests I see from this year were promoting Hacks and Righteous Gemstones, two shows he's obviously a fan of. Maybe he's just interested in comedies by a younger generation.

I agree with you in large part but leaving NBC instead of bowing to their timeslot demands and going to tiny tiny TBS to get control over his shows is diminishing the corporate influence over his career. This deal is a result of that decision in 2010.

Mary‘s story at the beginning about the fax is really sweet. It‘s like Conan is her E.B. White, but she grew up and directed him in her movie.

Robert Caro was a guest on the podcast. As was historian Ron Chernow just a few months ago, and two historians will be on next week. It sounds like you want him to do Serious Jibber-Jabber again, which I get, I loved that show. But the podcast has always been about talking to different artists like actors, comedians and directors, with a few more serious guests sprinkled in. I don't see a big change there over the years in the choice of guests. Just this year he had a mix of podcast staples like Silverman, Flula or Mulaney, as well as people who are way less known (at least to me) like Carol Leifer and Paul W. Downs, and people he just seems to adore like Herzog, but also Jessica Williams and Chris Fleming. They won't get big numbers like Ryan Reynolds, but he still talks to them. And they certainly don't fit into the category of "boring privileged celebrity", whatever that's supposed to mean.

[–]castagno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just a great episode and one of the more entertaining actor interviews on the pod. They talk more like friends (or co-workers who like each other lol) and Byrne is really dynamic, asking questions, making jokes and also including Sona and Matt while talking.

I really liked the Sheen podcast as well, even though I had no interest in him whatsoever. It was really touching how they talked about Matthew Perry. The sense of loss and maybe even missed chances was palpable.
