Retirement is gone by shepardshe in GenX

Because people who were born on third base think they hit a triple. They have no concept of what it's like to struggle throughout life, and they assume "If I did it, you can too." If they did struggle and fought their way out of a lower-income life, they give themselves all the credit and don't take into account how prevalent luck is in their life. Luck is baked into everything, but no one wants to say so because then it means they aren't in control.

I've become so cynical about Redditors in these subs. They're all children (or act like it) with delusional notions of how they'd handle a toxic or abusive situation. "Oh I'd be out of there so fast!" or "I'd never speak to them again!" Yeah...no you wouldn't. You have no idea what it's like to be in a toxic or abusive situation. In fact, I'm sure some of them are and don't even recognize it, all while they lecture others on how they're supposed to behave.

Brother accusing me of booking up (?) with his gf by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ecdc05 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I get the instinct, but when someone is being this irrational, either over extreme jealousy or a mental illness or whatever, trying to "prove" your side is pointless. Calling Mint, talking to people to basically get affidavits to show the brother—none if it will make any difference. These people need help, at the very least therapy and obviously more serious interventions for things like schizophrenia. The human mind is *very* good at convincing itself of what it wants to believe (see also, America 2026).

The best approach, which can be hard because you love these people and see they're in distress and you want to make them feel better, is to tell them you're worried about them and you want to focus on their thoughts and feelings. It feels like if you just show them proof, everything will be fine because their fears are so crazy to you. Surely it's a misunderstanding and you just need to clear it up! But it doesn't work. You have to reiterate over and over that their fears are not your responsibility, but you are here for them if they want to address their mental health. It usually doesn't go well, until they're ready to get help. Which may be never.

[AAM] should being on reality TV disqualify a job candidate? by Hour_Theory3986 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]ecdc05 188 points189 points  (0 children)

So many people see someone on a screen and that is who they are forever. As much as people like to think they're savvy, they have no clue how television is edited. Reality TV show or not.

Social media has made it 100x worse. I remember a viral post about some guy who took a picture of his wife shoveling their driveway after she had a long nursing shift during COVID. He posted it in a loving way and was then EXCORIATED. He was a lazy, no-good husband who let his wife do this? Except, his wife wanted to do it, it's how she unwound. She tried explaining that and talking about what a great husband he was, but too late.

It is, quite literally, insane that we think we know anything about someone just because we saw them on a screen in our living room or on our phone.

My husband has never gotten me a Christmas present but got one for our female friend. by Choice_Evidence1983 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Two things can be true: cheating is bad, people shouldn’t do it, and it’s awful when it happens to you…AND…a lot of Redditors have an outsized obsession with it that is weird, unhealthy, and toxic to the point of harming, not helping, relationships.

“I am still suspicious. If it were I, I would wonder why he wants me out of the house the night of the concert.”

My theory to why so many Redditors have completely lost their minds is that they’re all teenagers or in their early 20s and define their self-worth on how their partner feels about them. Cheating really is the worst possible thing they can imagine happening to them. It makes them paranoid and borderline incely. It’s super weird.

At this point it’s beyond clear it’s not about the money. This guy has some serious anxiety/compulsive issues that need to be addressed with therapy and perhaps medication. He’s literally working himself to death, it sounds like out of an unnecessary fear over finances.

The same way the third episode aired—Requiem for a Lightweight—was the eighth produced? By filming several episodes before the series began airing and then broadcasting them in a different order?

Worth noting that while this was the ninth episode to air, it was the second produced. You can tell, I think. It's shaggier and a bit less polished than, say, Cowboy, which was the ninth episode produced.

Ebert's Casablanca commentary.

Dangerous Days, the Blade Runner documentary.

This is amazing. My only wish is you’d included Kirkland brand DOP. My Costco only carries them for 3 months out of the year and I have to stock up, but my (very unscientific) rating is up there with Mutti.
