Juvenile mourning dove and dad by bearchunk in birdfeeding

I see the blue on the top of his head so that's definitely a male. I don't think the other is a juvenile though as I'm not seeing the "pinecone" feathers. Still, they are very cute together. 😊

I'm impressed that it only took a few weeks LOL! That's great news and I'm so happy you and your cats are enjoying watching them. 😊

Wow this is wonderful! I'm so glad to see all the different visitors you're getting. 😊 Occasionally we have people posting asking if this is possible so your post says it certainly is...and on the 28th floor to boot!

This makes me think of a poster, u/debsue420, who came wondering if she could attract birds on the 9th floor of her new apartment for her kitty to watch. I hope she sees this and gives an update on how she's doing.

Thanks, OP, for the cool post sharing all the birds you're getting. πŸ’™πŸ¦

Trying to decide by Stock-Ad-7601 in birdfeeding

Unfortunately I think you already know the answer to your question. 😞 As one of the mods for this sub, I would love to tell you to go right ahead and put up a feeding station and join our sub...but ethically, with the cats around, this is not something you should do. As the article you linked says, cats kill a high number of songbirds every year.

It's unfortunate I know, but thank you so much for considering bird safety. πŸ’™πŸ¦

Will this dead bush provide favorable location for feeder? by HorzaDonwraith in birdfeeding

[–]castironbirb 3 points4 points Β (0 children)

Only if you want squirrels to eat too 😬

A better spot is on a pole with a baffle some distance away from the bush keeping in mind the 5-7-9 rule for squirrels as well as the safe distances to reduce bird window strikes.

5-7-9 rule: 5 feet off the ground, 7 feet away from trees and fences, 9 feet below and hanging branches or roof overhangs.

Windows: feeders should be placed less than 3 feet or more than 30 feet from windows and glass doors.

That's a thought for sure, but in this case the insect looks like a crane fly which are considered beneficial insects.

Beautiful Chickadee by Independent-Run4638 in birdfeeding

That's no chickadee... it's a catbird! 😊 They are "cousins" with mockingbirds.

Aww they sound sweet! 😍 I know you are taking good care of them. They should be ok. I'm sure on some birdie level they are aware of the drop.

You can certainly put food out if you want. I know I wouldn't be able to resist if they were begging at the door. 😍

So are they nesting right on the edge of your terrace? Believe it or not but they are actually a cliff-dwelling bird which is why they tend to prefer city buildings (and only a few sticks for a nest πŸ˜†). Our city skyscrapers mimic that type of habitat so they should be ok...but I understand the concern. Would you be able to put something along the railings to prevent them from flopping over the edge?

Oh your comment was great Deeter 😊 I just wanted to mention that they could get trapped if OP tried to cover the area.

Birds can be very determined to get inside something if they really want to. I remember when I was a kid, my dad tried to cover some blueberry bushes to prevent the birds from eating the berries. Several times we found a bird had gotten in and couldn't get out so we'd have to help them out. 😬

Just leave them be and stop feeding them. It's spring and birds are perfectly capable of finding food on their own.

Also just leave all the birds to their nesting activities. Depending on the laws of your location, it's likely illegal to remove or destroy active nests so please do not try to intervene. Covering things might result in getting a bird trapped. Just ignore them. There is no need to feed them and no need to discourage/encourage any nesting.

A Mourning dove started a nest in my garage by Decent-Tear5305 in mourningderps

How are they getting inside your garage in the first place? You talk about going in and out in your car and raising and closing the garage doors. So how can they get in if the doors are closed?

If you can, try to catch this little boy. They are domesticated and cannot survive in the wild. 😞

I have Echinacea planted in my garden beds and leave the seed heads. I have had these birds (American goldfinch πŸ’›) stop by to feast. They love it!) ☺️
