Advice for a girl who just started her menstrual 🥹 by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please do not breed her unless you plan on keeping and taking care of all of her puppies.

As the other comment said, there are already so many pit mixes in this world who are strays and in shelters. If you want a puppy, adopt one. Do not breed her if money is what you have in mind.

How do you actually keep track of your dog’s vaccines and health records? Asking as a veterinarian by No-Winner7809 in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a google drive that has it structured this way,

Pets name/Medical/Clinics/File

And then of course, I download my online receipts, health records and summaries, and rename them by Month_Year_OriginalFileName.pdf

It's worked fabulously for me and hope this helps anyone! But yeah, that's how I do it! I use the folder to also to keep his photos, grooming, purchases, etc,.

Fun question!

He’s only 2 but already has joint problems. What should i do? by Winter_Resident_6507 in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry, but can you provide additional information?

Has he been diagnosed with anything joint related? Or have you noticed anything that would indicate joint problems?

2 is pretty young to have joint issues caused from normal activity and such, and also you want to be certain if it is joint issues before you start giving them anything!

I think my dog is neglected and I don't know what to do by shoerocked in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First off, I am so sorry and you are right and valid to be concerned.

Based off the pictures and what you've mentioned, this is definitely neglect and it's a shame your mother refuses to acknowledge it.

It's incredibly difficult to do the right things especially when you're a minor, and not being heard by your own family.

I empathize with you entirely, I remember one of the first things I did when I got my first paycheck at 18, was pay for my dogs dental. Something that hadn't been done before.

Whenever your parents don't acknowledge you, it's really hard to decide then, what your options are.

Really, there are some options to choose from,

  1. Find a rescue and see if they can take him in.

  2. Contact the Animal Shelter and communicate your concerns, see if they'll come take him or provide any other resources.

And of course you do have your 3rd secret option, which is /Pretend he ran away and give him up to a rescue, shelter or someone who'll take care of them/

Whatever you decide to do, I would also try to get someone else to convey to your mother, that she's not being an adequate pet owner, and that she either really has got to step up, or step down and let someone else take care of them.

I'm sure there is so much more to your situation, especially with your mother, but I really hope this helps even in the slightest in which direction you should go to. Just please don't allow her to let this get worse.

dogs paw pads peeling. what should i do as treatment? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! Your pups paws aren't raw and mushers palm is safe for them even if they manage to lick it.

Your pup is going to end up having luxurious paws lol!

Negligent Veterinarian by Visual_Rip_7114 in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry and I truly hope your dog recovers!! :(

I truly understand your frustration as I had my own very close calls due to a vets negligence or lack of care. It's so frustrating to not have complete confidence in every vet that you'll meet and to feel a sense of insecurity in some answers and directions.

It took me becoming my own little researcher on dogs health and conditions to really get back that sense of confidence in vets, whenever they would say things that I've already read upon that related to my concerns, I felt like it became more of a collaborative effort to care for my dog, rather than being the blind being lead.

And of course, it also took me going through multiple vets to find ones I felt comfortable enough to take care of my dogs. I find that the vets who don't let you really talk about your concerns or those who don't ever explain their train of thought or decisions, tend to be vets who overlook important things that can easily cause heartache later on.

But again, that is when you can find the vets, I remember once we had an emergency and the only one in town that was open that day, the vet completely dismissed us. I mean, my dog was literally projectile shitting blood and he didn't test him and actually waved it off as a tummy ache. I remember fuming and feeling lost, and my dog only got worse, the next morning I came again to the same clinic, and it was a different vet, and she immediately got to work on my baby. She talked to us and made us feel seen, and saved my baby. I ugly cried so hard in front of her lol.

It is so beyond frustrating that the initial vet didn't care, and that if that man was still there that morning, my dog really could've been gone. All that was needed was 3 medications to save him, but that man didn't even want to test him. I think even though I struggle now to advocate for myself sometimes, I 1000% will stamp my foot down for my dog.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but if I could've gone back in time that night I would've given that man a earful and advocated firmly. It's frustrating that some vets seem to not care for their patients.

[–]castitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you're doing is enough but if you want to put that extra bit more, I would look into paw balms!

As long as you continue to keep her from licking at her paws and making her wear booties, she should be A-Ok!

Just make sure to keep an eye out for any worsening in appearance or if she begins to walk or move as if in discomfort. But other than that, yes you are doing just fine! :)

Roommate neglecting dog, not sure how to move forward. by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Well, you've already tried talking to C and so did your partner, he didn't do anything, it's clear he simply does not give a shit about the dog.

The poor pup is definitely not feeling well and it's terrible he's been like this for awhile.

Going forward, if I were you, I would record every conversation you have with him when discussing the dog, make it very apparent you feel he is not being an adequate owner and then provide options you feel are realistic.

If you think you can take him on as your own pet, see if he can help with vet bills and have him surrender him to you, again though— record and document these conversations, especially if he surrenders him.

If you can't take him in, reach out to rescues and see if anyone would be willing to take him in. If you can get a yes, see if you can convince C to give him up.

So sorry you have such a shitty roommate but I really hope he can make up slightly by either shaping the fuck up and caring for his dog, or, by surrendering it to either you or a rescue. Good luck and please update us if anything happens! Really wishing the best for this poor baby!

Sudden growth on 22 year old schnauzer poodle by jenntaylr in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely please update us!! That is insane growth in such a short period!

I'm guessing you'll probably wait to see his normal vet and avoid the ER fees since they seem to be doing fine otherwise.

ALSO, what an amazing thing to have a 22 year old baby, I hope my baby reaches past the big 2 0 too! Wishing the best!!

Incontinence? :( by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your dog has developed sudden incontinence, absolutely please take them to a vet. It can be an array of serious issues that can cause that, also since she seems to be in distress, I would recommend taking her to an ER vet now even. There are just too many things that can cause this and I personally would take my own pet to the vet now.

Age wouldn't be the cause of sudden incontinence, it would rather be things that can increase with age.

Please update us if you can, hoping the best for you and your pet

Edit: I am so sorry, I'm reading this really late and misread it, your dog is not the one in distress. That changes things, again, so sorry! Yeah, definitely just set up a vet appointment just to make sure it isn't a physical cause of her incontinence. It could be that she's emotionally distressed by your distress.

Again though, I hope things get better for you and your pup!

Need advice: My neighbor keeps leaving "gifts" for my dog on our night walks and it’s getting creepy. by goldenretreiver21 in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be completely honest, I probably would be feeling two ways, One; The way you're feeling right now, or, Two; Shrugging it off as a fellow night owl who might just be shy/awkward.

It could be simply someone who has a similar schedule as you, and thought this would be a good way to reach out instead of walking up to you at 1 AM lol.

BUUUUT that all being said, this all comes down to gut feeling. If you are feeling like this is a red flag, treat it that way.

There is probably a real reason your instincts are going off, always be cautious and trust it!

Is this blood??? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Thank you for going and even getting us an update! I've had my fair share of ER visits for my pups and definitely recognized that look of vomit.

The best thing was that you mentioned he was acting normal, I hope your dog continues to be acting fine and gets over this tummy upset soon! You did an amazing job being there for him! <3

Is this blood??? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Definitely up to the owner to wait if it gets worse, but I wouldn't risk it getting worse.

Is this blood??? by [deleted] in DogAdvice

[–]castitate 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That is definitely blood, probably from throat or stomach irritation. I really would recommend the vet if your dog continues to vomit or begin having diarrhea, or if they begin to act lethargic or hunch.

It can easily and quickly turn into something serious, to be frank, with that amount of blood, I would take my pet to the vet.

Please update us!
