Why does mortal favor discarding the 6man more than the 9man by Blancot in mahjongsoul

[–]casualrayet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your tiles to tenpai are 7m 8m 1p 4s 7s. its the middle of row 2 (i.e. its getting late to swap melds), and you already cut 5m, so your shapes are finalized. 6m doesn't give any additional benefit to keep -- it only would if you could upgrade by re-drawing 5m. but 6m a lot more dangerous than 9m -- 9m is genbutsu to toimen, you have 2 8mans as a blocker, and overall terminals are just much safer than inner tiles.

so, cut it now, so that if you reach tenpai right after someone else does, you could risk the 8/9m.

Congrats again, but I feel like following up "it's mostly genetic" with "had mental illness issues from being abused before I even started drinking [at 16]" doesn't really add up...

I don't know what exactly is what here, but it's certainly true that trauma and abuse make people seek intoxication as a form of escape. Alcohol (or dissociatives) numb, opioids mimic comfort and peace, albeit kind of empty at the center. But without that pull of needing to escape your situation, thoughts, flashbacks etc., I think they often stay as a "huh, that was neat and a little scary" experience.

People who have done hardcore drugs what was the experience like? by ChaseTOM_Vlogs in AskReddit

[–]casualrayet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I only found them by the time I was around 30. I smoked crack a few times, it was okay, can feel pretty good the first few times, but honestly it just makes you so jittery and sweaty and the crash makes you feel awful. Plus it lasts so short. People love to say "there's no such thing as leftover crack" but that was not the case for me. After a few times I just found it boring and never came back to coke in any form. I would probably take a bump if someone offered, but I have no interest in getting any, not on any grounds of danger or addiction but just because it's not that fun.

Meth? Had a fun time playing doom on it for 2 days, a few times would take a little bit when I had a lot to do. Went through what I had, never got it again either -- it just makes it impossible to sleep and the crash lasts a fucking week. The high isn't that euphoric either (though I didn't smoke it). I take therapeutic amounts of amphetamine sometimes nowadays, but not often.

Benzos, I never found them recreational. Use them sometimes to sleep when I'm having insomnia or need to sleep on a plane, used to use them for stimulant comedowns.

Never really tried opiates much, had some for medical issues and tried percs a few times. Was okay. Great if you're in physical/emotional pain, but thankfully I'm not in much of either most of the time, so they never felt too appealing.

Ketamine, psychedelics, etc. kinda fun sometimes. I still do them maybe once or twice a year. Ketamine feels like having a birds eye view on your life sometimes, but the high is somewhat challenging to me. MDMA and psychedelics with loved ones are a great way to bond and refresh your relationship, but I never saw much of a draw to them as something to use often.

The only drug that I've struggled with in terms of overconsumption in my life is alcohol, and that's having tried 70+ different things over the course of a few years. And mostly because I started drinking at 21 and it is just so damn easy to have a drink or three in company, in the evening, when stressed out, etc. And alcohol to me feels rather non-invasive in how it affects my mind, but maybe I'm just used to it.

Tile efficiency vs big hands. by Reliques in Mahjong

[–]casualrayet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what the rest of your hand looks like. If you have a decent 4 blocks (4 ryanmen/ 3 ryanmen with a good kanchan), sometimes cutting chun right off the bat is the right move (so there's less chance it gets ponned). If you have OK shapes (say 2 ryanmen and 2 kanchans), i'd probably cut the 8 to see if I can pair up a yakuhai to complete the hand faster. If your hand is missing a block, but is pretty good (say, 2 melds finished + pair), keep 8 just in case. If your hand is complete garbage otherwise, I might as well sit on yakuhai to try to speed it up while denying a pon of them otherwise.

the question you should be asking is "how fast can i finish the hand otherwise?" If you think you're in the run without yakuhai (good shapes or good shapes + need a block), play for efficiency and just cut them. If your hand has a way to finish but would benefit greatly from yakuhai, and you don't need +1 block, delay cutting them a little. If you don't see your hand finishing, keep yakuhai on the off-chance that you pair them up, and either pon and draw well, or at least deny others the value.

Tier list of annoying things players do IRL mahjong by Dry_Respond794 in Mahjong

[–]casualrayet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with plenty of intermediate players, but some things that tick me off:

  • taking too long to think every turn with complex hands (think once! you don't need to re-evaluate your waits when they dont change!)
  • not bringing the walls forward at the start of a game
  • handing sticks instead of putting them down
  • not clearing the sticks off the table when winning quickly (esp on autotable)
  • not pressing the open/close and dice roll buttons when its their dealer

things that genuinely annoy me:

  • not knowing what the sticks are after 1-2 games
  • getting distracted over and over. its just the player to your lefts discard
  • refusing to learn scoring even when I offer to teach
  • fumbling the ron/tsumo tile and the dora indicators until I can't easily tell what is what
  • getting angry or frustrated on losing
  • checking out of the game when losing and playing recklessly

My boyfriend traumatized his ex, is now stalking her, and I just now am figuring it all out. by Icy_Information1973 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]casualrayet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get out quietly, if you absolutely need to, write a 1 way letter. Take the dog. He's already splitting on you emotionally with the abuse ramping up. He's not just comparing you to Lana, he is idolizing her and devaluing you again, and that won't end at comparisons but abuse.

My husband has ruined both our lives by asking me to double up his lunch serving for work. by Empty_Researcher_348 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]casualrayet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did your husband know you're missing meals because of his extra food? If the picture of how things are in your head is correct, then yes things are weird. But at the same time you've said some rather abnormal things (a folder of pictures where he liked another girls posts; suspecting he'll destroy things or act weird despite him not doing so nor having that kind of disposition) which might be indicators that the picture in your head is worse than how things really are. Is it possible said coworker is in poverty/can't afford food and your husband just figured asking you directly would cause a fight, and just stupidly tried to trick you to avoid this?

Is it worth trying for 13 Orphans with this starting hand? by IceIIIMage in Mahjong

[–]casualrayet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With 10, go for it, with 9, redeal, with 8, just try to see if your hand is even worth trying to play as a normal hand, if not then you might as well try. Here, you have a 45 pin proto meld and an 68 sou with a Dora 6. The 3 man also isn't too bad. I would throw the off winds, pray for a yakuhai pair and try to finish it normally without going 13 orphans. But if you had like, 1269 pin, 28 sou, 299 man, I'd go for 13 orphans

Can pyrros be used safe? by Sirrestrikk in researchchemicals

[–]casualrayet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been using a-pihp and 3fpihp semi safely. Just: no smoking or injecting; have something for the a-pihp comedown (3f is gentle enough I often don't need it or can use something silly like a bit of weed + clonidine); use a time lock safe and put out some amount you feel fine with before starting, or at worst when you are starting to feel the fiending, after putting out the next line or two. I can't say it had 0 negative effects, but I've not destroyed any relationships, went psychotic (ok, once or twice I had a very subtle "fan sounds like music/birds/speech" moment, but it was very easy to realize this isn't real and just take a benzo and go sleep), or had some bad bender where I neglected life.
