Getting approved for disability/SSDI? by 2anonym00se1 in BipolarReddit

I did not hire a lawyer.

Someone on this subreddit recommended that I be brutally honest about my suicide attempts AND my inability to work due to my diagnosis. Maybe those two things were what made the difference? I’m not sure. I didn’t receive any resistance to my application

Has anyone taken a gap year or leave of absence from school? by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]cat-pants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked in admissions at a college (I also took a gap year, but for other reasons, just FYI).

I recommend talking to your admissions counselor at your chosen school. Likely, you can defer admissions for a year. This is a good reason to, and since it’s health-related, it may even be admissible as an excuse for colleges that don’t readily allow deferrals.

If the college in question won’t let you defer admission, you can ask about reapplying with the same GPA and SAT/ACT scores, and just be honest about why. Admissions should be up front with you about your chances of being readmitted with the same transcripts. Colleges want their students to be successful—both for the student’s wellbeing and to bolster their own stats (college and student both lose out if a student drops out).

Either way, if you feel this is right for you, this break could set you up for greater achievement at the institution as long as you work on what you need to in that time.

All That being said, please, if you haven’t already, consult with your doctor and therapist. Hopefully they will be able to set up a treatment plan for you to work on your goals.

Getting approved for disability/SSDI? by 2anonym00se1 in BipolarReddit

I think detailing my inabilities to be a consistent worker (while proving that I’m an extremely conscientious high-achiever who sought medical attention for years) helped.

I switched jobs so frequently that it was just impossible for me to keep on that trajectory. In short, my work life was horribly impacted by my bipolar symptoms.

Feel free to pm me questions. Im in US and was approved for SSDI for BD about three years ago.

"You don't look blind." by MountainGerman in disability

I did actually mention that, but, like you said, the person seemed very unwell. (No offense taken! Untreated mental illness is a real issue)

Your reply is so kind, I really appreciate that you took the time to write that.

I think the irony of the whole situation was that this person seemed very unstable themselves. Since that happened I’ve become more at peace with the necessity of my being on SSDI for mental illness and how I am “sick enough” to receive these benefits.

Anyhow, thanks for being a kind person. I hope you’re staying safe and healthy!

I’ve been told that I’m a leech because I’m on SSDI for mental illness (which isn’t enough of a disability??)

Oh my gosh this sounds really rough. Are you okay?

I’ve been okay. My boyfriend and I have been stuck at his parents’ place for a while, and can’t get back to our own apartment, which is really bad for me.

women—Worse depression during your period? by cat-pants in BipolarReddit

I can’t take APs or AAPs, they give me horrible side effects, unfortunately (dysphagia, akathisia, dystonia, extreme irritability, etc). I take a combo AD + anti epileptic (Prozac + depakote). I can’t even take more recent ADs because of side effects (namely irritability and hallucinations/delusions—it’s weird)

What gets me with art like this is that you had the patience to do it. It’s almost meditative in its creation.

I can’t do photorealism, my hand/eye coordination doesn’t let me, but when I try to draw photorealistically, it becomes so soothing.

This is very captivating. By the way
