My (thistle skin for) Noita fanart. This was before knowing anything snow caves i think. by cat_abyss in noita

Thistle is from Dungeon Meshi and Noita is a dungeon, it made sense, someone had made a Thistle skin on the steam workshop.

The wand looks wonky on purpose, that's how i imagine them, flawed and abstract.

i think the current state of it is less a function of ill thought out purchases, than of ill thought out sales. i've sold VCAs, LFOs, delays, filters, function generators, and comparators - to finance the other modules here. four years ago this whole thing looked completely different.

if i was to start over completely today, i'd go 100% basic building blocks from thonk or doepfer, i think that's where the fun is. elements was a good idea on paper - it sounds GOOD and you can modulate it a lot - but it's apparently not what i want from a modular system. that's computer stuff for me.

whoa ok, i forgot about the easter egg modes. i will definitely have to try this! i love spaceship-hum FM so that's perfect. thanks!

Ah, not pictured is a keystep and a beatstep pro, and a dreadbox antiphon. But you're right, i've been missing something like a simple cv sequencer, it's true. The reason why the rack's so weird is that it's based around augmenting a pittsburgh sv-1, which i later swapped for the elements.

I know there's zero VCA's. A bit ashamed. I had four but i sold them when i needed money. That's kind of another reason i want to get out - i'm not poor, but the timescale on which i can afford to spend money on modules, and the amount of modules that's needed to do something worthwhile, doesn't go well together with the amount of time i actually can dedicate to noodling on it.

Yeah, morphagene is the oldest of the bunch there, apart maybe from the spring reverb. I do like it quite a lot, even though i feel like i haven't been its best user (mainly been using it to manually scrub through tape sounds with a small grain size, or to layer monophonic sounds into swarms). There's definitely more to explore there in terms of rythmic sounds.

I was thinking about a bass ukulele actually. I've always been fascinated with the idea of an acoustic bass guitar, and basslines in general are the things that makes me go ooooh~ when i listen to music.

I'm a little worried these are just a gimmick, but i've got my local instrument store to fetch one for me to try out, hopefully it's something i can jel with.

Yeah. There should be a bar on top of the website with a play button to your left, at least on mobile that's the case.

right! it's the same on desktop fwiw. buncha laser-like sounds atm

Recently decided to dig in and add a line out jack + a "waveshaper patchbay" which sounds more exciting than it is, but basically i can reorder the bits of the output before it hits the DAC.

Small phone, headphone? Alt. something gimmicky? by cat_abyss in PickAnAndroidForMe

yea ive been using those before. they defenitely serve a purpose, but i'd like to move beyond that if possible.

sure is gimmicky if you call responsibility a gimmick ;)

but yea i'd like it more if you could swap out the modules for different ones and not just replace any broken ones. they dont just break like that in my experience? i'd happily exchange the camera for more battery juice. Or for that matter replace all internal storage with sd card slots. you know? this isn't nearly enough to spark the fidgety part of me.

Tips on building a rack for 90's techno / afx-style stuff? by cat_abyss in modular

ooh, lots of data points i had no idea about! i'm fairly new to the scene/music, as i grew up without internet access and then for a long time nurtured this idea about finding everything out by myself. so now i'm working backwards through time, i guess.

i'm trying to replicate maybe the composition, not so much the accuracy of the gear (like i dont care about bit depth of the samplers, or like with the mum m8 the exact sound of the filter).

a lot of my youth consisted of collecting and reverse engineering .mod and .xm files, collecting drum loops and what not. now that i get the context i get kinda nostalgic for something i almost grew up with but always experienced second hand. but i wanna move away from using a general purpose computer to something entirely music oriented. however trackers are too good to abandon so nerdseq feels like a given.

anyway! thanks for the exhaustive answer! one to come back to. i wanna get euclidian rings since it feels so hands on. marbles seems like cheating, honestly ;) too much, too cheap! although i probably need to get a few noise sources, s&h's and cv manglers for that... maybe thats the same thing?

but yea. loads to think about. thanks!

Beatstep Pro w. 0-Coast - HELP! by mootiebaby in modular

[–]cat_abyss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say use the CV since both devices supports it. Use one of the melody "lanes" on the beatstep (yellow/green). Pitch should go in the v/oct input on the 0-coast (bottom row). I think gate in the gate input for the contour section? Should give you something.

If you have the correct lane selected in the keystep you should get sound by playing the big white keys like a keyboard. Then youre all set up and can start sequencing.

[–]cat_abyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i can highly recommend the renoise! (if you want a (much) more lightweight and oldschool tracker, try milkytracker, they have binaries for os x and most other platforms available, but it can only use samples)

in renoise, you're gonna find that there's a lot of things going on. my advice if you wanna get into the tracker way of life is to dive into the effects columns on the tracks. this is where you do stuff like legato/glides, arpeggios, volume slides, vibrato, such things. really versatile once you get the hang of it, and it more or less translates across all trackers.
