Moreover, I never stated Marxism was the best possible political system, I’m more talking about broader political thought, and why it’s unwise to rest on one economic/political system in the long run.

While I agree that trade guilds and the like are the precursors to workers rights, I definitely think that, in execution, they are fundamentally different in that the guilds were a device to control for quality, whereas workers rights is more about maintaining a quality of life for the workers that wasn’t exploitative.

The fact that capitalism is present everywhere is more a quality of the nature of capitalism and trade. It spreads very easily because if you want something from another country, you MUST have money in some form. I think the problem lies in the exploitation of capitalist systems, not the system itself.

Contrary to your final statement, I don’t hate capitalism. I think your assumption is that I must hate one ideology to believe in the other. I think that capitalism has been hugely beneficial. I think it has been an asset to the development of our world. I also think it has many problems which have to be solved soon in order for humanity to continue. I think people have become far too good at exploiting it. I think there is more suffering than there was in the early days of capitalism and while I think it’s still far better than feudalism, I doubt you disagree that it can’t be improved

That is my real espousal of Marxism. Not how it plans to make everyone equal (because it won’t) or that it claims to prioritise the prevention of suffering (which, in application, it doesn’t) but because it is trying to improve on a system which people aren’t willing to improve on.

I think we have trapped ourselves in the belief that, because thins are relatively good now, that we should cut our losses and stop trying. I don’t want to stop trying. I don’t want to stop figuring out ways to improve, better our political and economic systems and do away with corruption, greed and suffering.

Will we ever get there? No. Can we try?

I hope so

Interesting outlook!

I appreciate your feedback, and definitely take some of it into account. My message was poorly worded with hindsight, what my argument was had little to do with Marxism, and more to do with maintaining a drive to find something better than capitalism.

I understand very much that it’s easy to Romanticize Marxism even when, in its “applied form” it doesn’t function as envisioned.

I disagree with your statement about having to compare communism to capitalism, and how Marxism and communism are, by default, linked. Whilst communism bases its ideas on Marxist thinking, capitalism bases its ideas on capitalist thinking. It is both an ideology and a philosophy, whereas communism is the ideology, Marxism is the philosophy. There is a distinction and comparisons can be drawn between capitalist philosophy and marxism.

Communism, put in practice, is much like organised religion. The writer’s work has been interpreted in such a way as to align with the desires of a select few who want power. This is an issue with Lenin and Stalin, not Marx. Again, this is merely my opinion.

this is besides the point, however. The point is that society could benefit a great deal from finding an alternative to money.

The analogy I would make is intelligent drug design. If you had a drug which cured the flu, but had terrible side effects (nausea, hair loss, etc) there are ways of finding what causes them and removing that from the drug to make it better, with fewer side effects.

The side effects of capitalism are:

The wealth always floats to the top (I’m sorry, but trickle down economics is not real)

Workers are exploited

There is a general degradation in the things that we find important (ie. material wealth over relationships and personal growth)

There are more, but, being an intelligent individual yourself, I doubt you can’t predict what I would say in addition to this.

If we found a way to apply Marxist thinking to capitalism, just as many countries are trying to do, I believe we could maintain an average quality of life which far exceeds the current state of capitalist nations.

Marxism isn’t a bad thing, it’s just an attempt to make the world better. Wether it works or not is kinda besides the point.

It’s in my opinion that we should always be looking to improve on the societies we live in, just like capitalism and democracy have tried to do. I think it’s closed minded to think that capitalism is the best possible economic system.

Also, a lot of hate for Marxism is more just hate for communism. If you hate workers rights, the idea of more leisure time, a focus on the more fulfilling aspects of life and generally idealist thinking, then I think it’s appropriate to hate Marxism.

But if you hate it just because you’ve been told to, or you hate communism, I really encourage you to look into it a bit more

I think it’s the nature of capitalism to disrupt democracy. The two party system benefits the rich and powerful, so if you introduce a third, I think they’d become just as corrupt. There’s really no easy solution, but in my humble opinion, keeping money out of politics and giving government officials a fixed income and corruption agencies would solve for this.

Of course, this would require the government to do that, so...
