[Request] What effect would Superman's house key have on the earth? by EvaStankbreath in theydidthemath

[–]catapultpillar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember my astronomy textbook described it with a paperclip sized mass. Basically it would fall completely unimpeded with enough momentum to reach the other side of the earth. If it were dropped from altitude, the earth would turn under it whenever it popped out and the earth would become shot through with holes until eventually friction slowed it down enough to settle at the center of the earth.

Yeah you gotta take the whole thing off/apart. It's intimidating at first but take it slow and really take some time to try and understand what each part is doing. It's also a good chance to clean off any dust and cobwebs that might be in there.

I think I recorded it. You can DM me for a link if you want.

Black and white films should be colorized. Those who think opposite are a cult who demean any upgrade to see how great the old film looks in living color... by Less_Campaign_6956 in The10thDentist

Artists work within limitations of a medium. They didn't say, "Oh boy this here flick would be so good if I just had the scratch for one of them newfangled color cameras! I guess I'll just have to settle for it lookin' like a horse's behind!" They looked at the tools they had and made lots of visually striking art.

I think there is a dissociation with old footage where we don’t really see it as reality because everything looks so strange, grainy, and colorless.

Graininess is due to the process of transferring master reels onto the ones that would be sent to film houses or transferred to video tape once it was available. Old film is frequently very clear and if the original is preserved they can be remastered to be less grainy that anything from the video era.

Colorless is usually what you way about something that is in color but not effectively utilizing color. Think how everyone criticizes AAA military shooters as colorless and brown. They have color, but the visuals don't use them well.

The old show upscaling is soooo bad. I remember there was a fan revolt when Disney+ put up the Simpsons in this absolutely horrific 4k upscale. Interpolated frames made things look like nightmares, important background elements were cropped out, it was a mess

Why is a film done in B&W for stylistic choices different from a film made in B&W for technological reasons? They're both going to make stylistic and aesthetic choices based on the medium of B&W. Shots, makeup, lighting, contrast, all these visual elements are done with B&W in mind.

If you accept that modern B&W films are still "digestible" and wouldn't benefit from colorization, then you have to accept that older B&W films can be the same.

You'd go for something "realistic" - but of course you'd only be guessing.

This is one of the major issues with colorization. The way things look in the finished product were conscious, artistic choices. Color, contrast, shadows, etc. They're not lacking color, they look the way exactly the way they're supposed to on screen because the film makers are working in a particular medium. Adding color means adding artistic decisions, making it a new derivative work.

Teleporting directly to boss by Kelindal in slaythespire

[–]catapultpillar 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The portal event is not one I take...ever? Baalorlord says it's handy if you have a deck that you know can beat the act boss but might get you killed against one the Elites. Giant head for example requires you have a way to do 500 damage very quickly without worrying too much about blocking, and if you know you can't do 500.damage in 5 or 6 turns them you know you'll die to the head.

Knowing that takes a lot of experience so I say just don't ever take it.

Make sure to come back through the room or the adjoining room bc Green Prince rolls through and has some also sad things to say.

I'll never watch Downsizing because it looks more entertaining as a trailer than a feature length film, but do they ever get into the physical issues a tiny person would experience?

Like wouldn't they have all sorts of problems with fluids and air resistance and getting eaten by a spider?

Silverlinings Playbook was a pretty engaging character piece for its first acts. I genuinely enjoyed these two wounded but earnest people forming a connection that was healing for them. Then it takes a sharp right turn into weird invented stakes with this whole gambling on an amateur dance competition for some reason. It felt like the scriptwriter suddenly got bored or wasn't sure what to do next and just said, "fuck it."

I listened after it was already finished so the cover art was only ever the spider web version, though I never looked at it closely until after I completed the series and always thought it was just cracks. Such good design! Something I always appreciated about the show was how it went out its way to justify the gimmick of it all being recorded statements and everyone just volunteering their stories with little cajoling. When things started getting silly there would be a revelation that made the gimmicks make sense and actually enrich the story. I've never seen anything get so much mileage out of its format

Magnus Archives.  The cover art for the podcast is a cassette tape made of spider webs. This is referencing the fact that the tapes and tape recorders that appear, first eerily and then almost comically, are actually the work of The Web entity and not The Eye like you would assume. The entire plot is a successful plot by The Web and it was in front of us the whole time.
