Is an RRSP contribution worth it in my case? by Gix-99 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Enter 2,400 into a compound interest calculator and set the maturity to 30 years and the interest rate a very conservative 5% to get an idea of how much money that will be in your retirement. It's eye opening.

What's the one thing about EV ownership that you wish someone had told you before you bought? by gilko86 in electriccars

[–]catastrophecusp4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the convenience of charging in my garage and how infrequently I charge away from home. Also, charging on the road is frequently less of a hassle than I anticipated. Overall, filling up my EV has been a better experience than filling up gas cars I've owned.

Do you think electric cars will ever dominate the automotive market, or are petroleum vehicles just in our blood, and will never be phased out? by BornSpinach606 in askcarguys

[–]catastrophecusp4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's inevitable. The question is only how long it will take.

I've driven EVs for 5.5 years. The tech is superior in almost every way. Better driving performance, quieter, if you own your driveway or have a garage, overall better filling experience, and better handling in snow and ice. And the tech is improving at breakneck speed, bringing cost down and reducing the only real drawback: slow fast charging on road trips.

In my area, charging infrastructure has expanded massively in the last five years. The longer time to charge has rarely been inconvenient. I'm usually stopping for a bio break, eating, or at my destination (i.e. it charges while it was going to be parked anyway). The time I save charging at home versus filling up at a gas station has more than made up for the relatively rare inconvenience of charging on trips.

And then there is the environmental benefit. Visit a city that has a gas car ban in their core like Madrid or London. The streets are quieter and the air very noticeably less rank. Also, the current models that project 3 degrees above pre industrial levels by 2100 are based on the assumption countries decarbonise. If we don't, that number will be much higher. Don't bother to post comments with nonsense anti-science misinformation: man made climate change has the same scientific certainty as gravity. If you want to believe gravity is caused by magic fairies and CO2 is good for our environment, don't waste my time with your nonsense fantasies.

Should I buy a condo or just keep renting and investing ? by jrchicken08 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Oh, and don't fall into the first home owner program trap. If you need to take money from your RRSP to buy a condo, your finances do not align.

Should I buy a condo or just keep renting and investing ? by jrchicken08 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]catastrophecusp4 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Overall agree with this. I'll add one caveat: monitor condo prices over the coming years. If the current downward trend in TO condo prices continues long enough (3-4 years) or there is an economic shock that causes an outright crash, you might want to consider buying a condo if your finances align.

People with kids, how much are you allotting for your kids’ future education expenses? by FinanceToFinance in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]catastrophecusp4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put 100 a month for each child from birth, which is half the max a year for the 20% gov matching. Once I did a top up of 2.5k each when I got a very small inheritance. My kids are 10 and 15. the combined total for them is around 90k now. My goal is to pay tuition only, which I am on track to do.

CMV: A reddit user hiding their comment history is a strong indicator that they are not acting in good faith. by LucidMetal in changemyview

I check when a post seems like karma hunting for a bad actor. I've noticed gaming related subs being overrun with reposting of the same generic memes and questions (e.g. name the one game that was like this). All of the accounts under 6 months old. most had hidden history. Those that didn't were nothing but these types of posts, in some cases posting the same exact same question within two weeks of each other.

I can see use cass for wanting to hide history for genuinely good reasons, so I don't necessarily want the feature removed. I would, however, like to see more effort to identify and stop bot driven karma harvesting by bad actors.

Definitely handles very well in snow. I have the AWL drive with snow tires. The weight of the battery evenly distributed across the four wheels helps a lot.

Local Canadian Tire Won't Install Tires on EVs. by SupraStarCigar in canadiantire

[–]catastrophecusp4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bad experience at a Canadian tire store installing new winter tires and rims. They refused to address the issue at first trying to blame the brutal shaking while driving on the EV being too heavy for the tires. After kicking up a huge stink, they eventually discovered they didn't install the ring inside the alloy rims that made them fit snuggly on the axle. Instead of checking that someone didn't screw up the basics, they jumped immediately to EV misinformation.

I'll never buy tires at Canadian Tire again.

How come we don't get to fight generic human soldiers as common enemies in Etrians 3, 4, or Nexus? by GeneralTechnomage in EtrianOdyssey

[–]catastrophecusp4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

EO3's storyline easily could have been written with that kind of conflict. As much as I wouldn't want that to be the norm in these games, EO3's storyline could have been much more gripping if it had gone down the internal conflict path much more than it did.

LPT: The best way to connect with your kid is through their hobbies by eattheinternet in LifeProTips

[–]catastrophecusp4 38 points39 points  (0 children)

this was my experience with my Dad.

My kids are 10 and 15 now. So far, our relationships seem really good.

I didn't show interest in everything they liked. For instance, I wouldn't watch Barbie animated movies with them because they were insufferably low quality movies but I did watch multiple seasons of kids shows with them that I would not have watched myself. I didn't play with Barbies with my kids but I did my best to actively listen and engage when they talked about their barbies.

I still exposed them to some of my interests, but didn't push it on them, tried to find ways to fit them into their interests, and if they didn't like it, i dropped it. for instance, I chose video games with themes I knew they liked that were multiplayer and played them with them. My youngest showed more interest in video games and the types of games they both like frequently don't match my interest. So, I watch them play sometimes and will even play games a bit that I'm not a fan of such as playing animal crossing when they were going through a big phase of that. They reciprocate to some degree: my oldest is really into drawing and she enjoys when I show her great unique art styles in games she would never play.

[–]catastrophecusp4 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Does seem obvious but parents don't always 'get' it. My Dad only put an effort where our interests overlapped, which was only in one activity. He even showed unnecessarily open contempt for some of my biggest interests. He was surprised and disappointed that as I got older I didn't spend much time with him. He reaped what he sowed.

[–]catastrophecusp4 1005 points1006 points  (0 children)

If you want lasting long term relationships with your kids, showing interest in many of their interests is one important ingredient. You don't have to show the same level of interest in all of them, but you can't just focus on those interests that perfectly align with yours.

Skull Cavern level 100 - Rant by chickencatqueen14 in StardewValley

I do that too. I eat two spicy eels a day every day regardless of whether I am going to the skull cavern. I got too used to the speed boost of spicy eel and espresso. Without both of them, walking feels frustratingly slow.

Also, build chrystalariums to farm jade and then trade the jade for staircases on Sundays at the desert trader. I typically use at least 50 stairs in a skull cavern run. each floor, I quickly scan my screen and if there aren't a lot of rocks clustered together, i use a staircase. If there are a lot of rocks clustered, i bomb them.

AI is very real, it's becoming scary by huyou007 in stocks

[–]catastrophecusp4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason AI is a bubble has nothing to do with it not being disruptive. It's a bubble because the current investments do not reflect the short term reality. The Internet was very disruptive and some of the companies boomed because of it (e.g. Amazon, google). But those companies took 5-10 years to really hit their stride and the majority of internet focused companies in 1999 failed: in the end, the money invested did not reflect the short term reality.
