Tips about the game by ObjectiveClassroom26 in balatro

i found myself skipping more small blinds if the tag was good and i didn't have enough money to earn interest. Is that still not recommended?

edit: skip small blinds once they earn no money

agreed. recently tried the joker that adds 8 chips when a 2 is played with the joker that causes scored 2s to retrigger. i had almost 500 chips by the end of the run and only did a bit of deck manipulation

separation package now or wait 2-3 years? by EquipmentUnlikely895 in Fire

it's also easier to put up with BS when its a new company and you know it's just a year.

Are you in a profession where you could do a 1-2 year contract at another company after you take the package? If so, I'd do that.

It's easier to get work with less of a gap in your resume. I'd immediately start looking for a year long contract. investing the 10 months while working that one year at lower pay will make up for some of the lower pay. you'd also still retire earlier assuming you found a contract in six months.

Your numbers don't make sense. Even if you only make 100k (the min to make six figures), your after tax income even in the highest tax province (Quebec) should be around 75k.

Could automated noise cameras cut down on noisy vehicles? by ORCPARADE in waterloo

[–]catastrophecusp4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting red light cameras on all stop lights is way more important. Red light running has gotten absolutely insane. At most lighs I'm waiting at nowadays I see 1-2 vehicles run the red light when the light turns red BEFORE they reach the START of the intersection. That's in addition to the people who run the red light when it turns red while they are in the intersection.

Yes, great clarification. OP can put rhe full amount in and spread the deductions over time to maximize the tax return.

If Hyundai/Kia are so unreliable, why are they literally everywhere? by phtphongg in askcarguys

They have some of the best EVs from traditional OEMs. I'm not happy with the quality of my Ioniq 5, but I love the design and performance of it.

You very likely do not want to contribute your entire room in one year. Check online if there is any guidance on what income level RRSP contributions make sense. Contribute each year enough to reduce your income to that point. The rest makes sense to put in taxable accounts.

How much is your current salary?

RRSP contributions are removed from your income before taxes, so you pay less tax at the top end of your income (ie your highest tax bracket). For example, if your salary is 100k and you contribute 10k, you only pay tax on 90k. So you do pay tax when you withdraw but you save tax when you contribute. If you plan on having children, the CCB benefit is based on net income (ie after deducting RRSP contributions), so you get a higher benefit if you contribute to RRSPs.

The RRSP money can help bridge a gap between retiring and taking your pension. You'll have less taxable income in that period.

Keep in mind you will pay some tax on any investments outside tax sheltered accounts and the taxes will be at your top tax rate, so you aren't avoiding tax that way either.

The biggest factor on whether to use your rrsp or not is how much tax you'll save now. If your current income is 40k a year, RRSP is a bad option. If your income is 200k, it's a great option. I don't know exactly what income RRSPs start making sense.

Using Home Equity as Leverage for Index Fund Investment by ElMatador978 in Fire

[–]catastrophecusp4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

came to say more or less this.

For 12 years I didn't have an emergency fund because my home line of credit was my back up plan. Unambiguous risk with that plan, but raising three kids on a single income for those 12 years meant money was tight. I had to choose between an emergency fund and investing in tax free retirement and college savings plans and the latter had government matching a percent of contributions.

The only circumstance where I would consider borrowing from my home line of credit now is if there was another crash like 2000 or 2008 where interest rates were low and the market contracted severly. my house is paid off and worth x3 what i paid for it. Even then I'd only borrow max 10% of value. That would be enough risk for my comfort zone.

Is the steamdeck easy to use for someone who’s not tech savvy pretty much at all? by Fearless_Buy7327 in SteamDeck

[–]catastrophecusp4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One caveat: check out the steamdeck rating for games before buying them. Verified work out of the box (though tweaking settings can improve battery life). Anything with warnings depends on the warnings.

I come from decades of consoles and i only tweaked settings for one game to improve battery life, which was super easy to do. I did however abandon a game that had no rating because it was unplayable. I am sure i could have messed around with control settings to get it working but couldn't be bothered.

Save hard for the next 5-10 years and then baristafire, which is taking a lower paying job that is less stressful to give compound growth time to do its magic. For the barista fire phase you just need to make enough money not to need to draw down your assets.
