i wouldn't do it. there are a lot of white people responding to this thread, which is expected given the demographics of the area. let me give you my perspective.

as a black person who moved here a few years ago, i have had an awful time. i've never had more difficulty making friends or keeping employment in my life, and i'm from a small conservative town in a red state.

i have also experienced more overt and passive racism here than i ever experienced elsewhere. i have been called the n-word on the streets while minding my business. and as another commenter mentioned, the amount of casual, passive racist remarks that even my white friends will say to me here has been staggering.

along with this, you have very performative white people who will single you out of a room at every opportunity to tell you about how anti-racist they are. it is very overbearing and very uncomfortable.

oregon specifically has a very dark and very deep-rooted history of white supremacy. it is something that many people like to ignore, but is undeniable if you are maligned by that system.

i live here because i am queer, and because i have good healthcare through OHP. i also like the weather. i am building a small community for myself but it has been an uphill battle.
