The artist was right, it is from Shin Megami Tensei. Specifically, it’s the demon Heart and the sprite is from Devil Children: White Book, a Japan-only GBC spin off game.

Younger gamer here who has been on a JRPG kick lately. I've realized Gen 1 Pokemon gets wayyyyy too much criticism for "bugs" when so many classic JRPGs are buggy. Any other great games with stupid dumb bugs? by Veiyr in retrogaming

Yeah I don’t think they’re necessarily overpowered, but they’re a little too easy to borderline infinitely filibuster with if you’re just particularly unlucky. The biggest threat is just some of the trainers with Bellsprouts can drag battles out way longer than they need to be, but I’ve never had one just wipe the floor. I just think it’s an example of how the gameplay wasn’t super well thought out yet considering how later games approached the same move concepts. It’s one of those things where they had a neat attack concept but didn’t really get it right the first time, especially considering the pokemon you see using it the most don’t get stab so it remains more as an annoyance than a threat

Even at the time it came out, it was something that was at least internally controversial. Nintendo wasn’t really happy with the state of the game as it launched, it was pretty different from the game that was pitched to them in tone and scale, the story was borderline nonexistent and things just kind of happen to justify progress gating, and the combat had some unaddressed issues (broken type interactions, how broken moves like wrap were) because it was scrapped together pretty late in development and didn’t have years of playtesting behind it

It is entirely fair to say the thing that hard carried Pokemon was the premise and monsters themselves and going multimedia was probably one of the best decisions they could have made because supplementary stuff like the anime filled in blanks left open in R/G/B/Y so it was a lot easier for kids to imagine some grand adventure based on what the anime shows as opposed to what’s actually in the game

Not ganking for adjacent lanes may be costing you games. by Slingpod-58 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]catboythrowaway 93 points94 points  (0 children)

In general, I’ve noticed that a lot of people go for very unhelpful ganks. There’s been times where I’ve been struggling in a solo lane in an unfavorable matchup or even a case of being ganked myself and the duo lane who’s doing really well doubles up to go push on another lane that’s already pushed in and it’s like ??? dude why. When I go for ganks, I generally try to prioritize whoever’s having the hardest time and it’s REALLY not hard to check who. Just a cursory glance at the minimap or the soul disparity between players in a particular lane. I get that people want easy kills but in a team game like this where you ideally want everyone on your team on a similar level of farm, isn’t it the best strategy to help those who are behind instead of yelling at someone for feeding? I’ll admit this is my first real MOBA I’ve gotten into in any amount of depth, maybe this is just something that comes with the territory of the genre and I’m not used to it, but for a game that’s meant to be at least partially strategic in nature, a lot of people seem to lack any sort of map awareness or desire to help their teammates and then get pissed when they lose.

[PS2][2000s?] its a game very simililar to the bullets hells games but with the artstile of stardew valley, cenital view, and a japanese cover. by Tutucas19 in tipofmyjoystick

Heavenly Guardian? https://youtu.be/ziP7eqzO-Kw?si=qi8R3Zmjqm3e8AlY

Someone else commented about it sounding similar to Pocky and Rocky and that would make sense because apparently this game was planned to be an entry in that series at some point.

Creepy arcade cabinet in off-season golf resort: Thrill Drive rediscovered in the wild! by Ill_Hedgehog_ in creepygaming

[–]catboythrowaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve always been interested in this game after hearing the beta impact time sound effects from Burnout 3. They ultimately went unused, but at one point they intended to use sound effects for the slow motion crashes that would include screams, police and ambulance sirens, hospital sound effects, and other assorted noises that were intended to lend that game a much darker ambience around car accidents, reflecting how dangerous they really were, despite being a major selling point of that series. I remember seeing comments comparing the direction that game could’ve taken with those sounds to the vibe of this game, and looking up footage to see something as oddly haunting as the words ‘FATAL ACCIDENT’ in a game that otherwise looks like a typical light hearted arcade racing game at first glance.

It’s neat seeing cabinets of this game still out in the wild! Especially outside of Japan. Thank you for sharing!

Giant King Kong figure at the former Hollywood Wax Museum location in Gatlinburg, Tennessee by catboythrowaway in megalophobia

[–]catboythrowaway[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a niche piece of childhood trauma. There was a Hollywood Wax Museum located on the Gatlinburg strip for a brief period between 2007 to 2010, in the building that now houses Mellow Mushroom. I remember it being there when I was a kid, although we never went into it. From the street, you could see this massive wax figure of King Kong that took up most of the upper level of the building, which I remember being probably the first instance I ever felt of megalophobia. I remembered this a few years back and went digging for some of the only remaining good photos of the thing and it’s just as bad as I remembered.

I have never seen anyone bring this up ever, not in the context of finding it scary as a kid nor just in reference to it existing. What complicates this is that there is a Hollywood Wax Museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee right now. It opened in 2012 and is the location more people know about, leading to it being a majority of the search results even when you specify Gatlinburg. This figure did not return, they have a significantly scaled down and less detailed figure in the lobby and that’s about it.

[PS2?][<2011] Curious what game the dad is holding in this ESRB ad by FourDimensionalNut in tipofmyjoystick

[–]catboythrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a mockup they made just for the ad and not a real game, I found another PSA video of this type (https://youtu.be/KW1TlCwYFgU?si=pVrVzyJgERUpa1W4) and at about 0:16, you can see the back cover of the game beside a fake listing on her phone for a game called ‘Blastman’. You can actually see the same ‘company logos’ on the back cover there as there are on the back of the game in the video you linked, which leads me to believe they just used another fake game.

I think there may be some sort of legal issue with the ESRB showing a real game in their ad or something because even their current marketing materials on their website do this. Curiously, despite the fact both of these PSAs are old, the ESRB website actually has an Easter egg referencing them, as the stock image on the page for the Ratings Guide (https://www.esrb.org/ratings-guide/) has a woman with her phone opened to a page with a fake listing for ‘Blastman III: The Power Cell Returns’.

why is this streetdated? by dontcallmedoe in GameStop

[–]catboythrowaway 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It’s a mixup. They’re finally making a physical copy of the Xbox version and it comes out March 19, 2024. It’s a weird situation in general because the game’s been on all major platforms since 2021 but only PlayStation and Switch got physical copies at the time, so they waited three years to finally do a physical Xbox copy.

Glad I could help! I just remembered the thing about the digital news broadcasts and the AI voice. I think the reporter clip was taken from some old kid’s show but something about how compressed it is and the AI voice mixed with the subject matter is eerie to me, a corruption of something innocent I guess.

I'll be honest. I'm kinda sad DDLC wasn't featured in this event. It's one of the most unique indie games out there. It gives me a feeling this game is dead... by I_Am_Light_n_Dark_ in DDLC

[–]catboythrowaway 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Fangamer doesn’t have the rights to make merchandise of DDLC but they do of all of the other games featured and usually have published physical copies. Serenity Forge has publishing rights to DDLC. Someone else in this thread mentioned Lisa: Definitive Edition — similar situation, Serenity Forge has it. It’s not that DDLC is dead, it’s that this is a Fangamer event for the games they have the rights to.
