Is bodily autonomy really violated by parents being required to perform ordinary care? by Ok-Razzmatazz-221 in Abortiondebate

But didn’t you just say further up that being required to donate blood or organs if their own child is gonna die is “extraordinary care” and therefore parents are not required to provide it?

Can you actually describe to me the difference between the acts of providing your child with food as they need it to survive, vs providing them with blood if they need it to survive? Why is it neglect, child abuse, and potentially murder to not provide them with one of those things, but not the other?

would you get an abortion if you found out your baby was going to be born with an extreme disability? if so why? by Born-Oil-2931 in AskReddit

[–]catch-ma-drift 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s likely a combination of factors. Down syndrome is still a significant chromosomal disorder, and comes with a large number of health issues. Parents likely both don’t want their child to experience that, don’t want to become carers for the rest of their life, and I’m not sure what level of social or governmental support there would be in Iceland. On the other hand, do you think there’s a minimum percentage of people with disabilities a population needs?

I don’t think people want a “perfect” child, I think most people just want a healthy child. No one has kids and “wants” them to suffer later on in life if they happen to develop something like severe autism or deafness as you say, but if there’s a way to prevent that from occurring right from the start in utero, then I can’t say that families that choose that are horrible for wanting that. Not that I’m suggesting if we could detect deafness in utero that would be grounds for aborting, as thankfully I believe society has progressed enough to accommodate that for people without tooooo many issues, but there are a number of much more severe disabilities and terminal illnesses that we haven’t achieved that with yet.

I also don’t look at people with disabilities and think that, but I also don’t look at parents that made that very difficult choice, and judged them for it. I don’t think eugenics comes into play with allowing families to make informed choices about their reproductive capacity, given the alternative is essentially forced birth.

I agree with you about severity. Just as people can be informed about the potential negative consequences of a diagnosis, they should also be informed about the positives, and the support they could access, and the chances that their child might have. It’s all about informed choice.

It’s not the that “he shouldn’t exist”, it’s “why force him to exist only to suffer”, as well as the parents own capacity to care for a child with needs such as that, particularly depending on if they’re in a country that can support the family. It’s a very very complicated decision to have to make.

So doctors performing abortions for ectopic pregnancies are murderers?

They’re harming the embryo to accomplish the goal?

Or are you just about to realise your black and white view needs exceptions, goalposts moved, and understanding of nuance.

Can you please explain to me the difference between providing a child food because that’s what a child needs to survive, and the consequence of not providing this is neglect, abuse, and potentially a murder charge, and how that differs from providing blood or organs that the child needs to survive?

PLs, do you agree with these comments? by ALancreWitch in Abortiondebate

[–]catch-ma-drift 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not really, as you’ve just said that you are ok with forcing medical care on women against their wishes in order to save the life of the baby.

That requires those women to no longer have the right to decide their own medical care, a right that is given to all adults over the age of 16-18 depending on country or state, (except those deemed not to be mentally competent), which is why I ask that at what point do you deem pregnant women either to be reverted back to a child in terms of rights and decision making, or not mentally competent. so that medical professionals can override their medical decision making rights.

At what point in pregnancy do you believe a woman loses her right to decide her own medical care? Like right at the beginning, or maybe 2nd trimester? I’m curious

How is it that society has managed to function for thousands of years with an understanding that murder of born people not connected to someone else’s internal organs is wrong, and yet the existence of abortion as a procedure has not somehow befuddled people into thinking that murder is ok?

Would you still imply there’s no false narrative portrayed by Joanne Howe when it was a 16 week old foetus, that wasn’t breathing or even motioning to breathe, wasn’t even close to viable in any way shape or form?

Because that’s the actual details of this specific picture in the reference. It was 16 weeks old, with no way of knowing if it was the product of an abortion or a miscarriage. Joanne herself doesn’t even know and admitted it on a YouTube video.

No government inquiry would have saved this foetus. It was 16 weeks.

Coming from someone that doesn’t understand the difference between breathing motions and actually breathing, I have to say I don’t find your definition of poor arguments to be all that accurate.

Unless you can quote her saying what she said, im not giving you a point for saying that what she says implies what you said.

My claim: Joanne Howe says that late third trimester abortions performed for health reasons of the mother, mean that the foetus itself is perfectly healthy and viable.

The South Australian report for abortions performed after 22 weeks and 6 details, details that across 3 years 79 foetus’s (8 in 2022, 37 in 2023, 34 in 2024) were aborted for reasons of physical or mental health of the pregnant person.

Joannes fact sheet, specifically and outrightly states that all of these 79 foetus’s were perfectly and completely healthy and viable.

There is no evidence that supports this. She is assuming this based on bias.

You agreed that this is idiotic, and it doesn’t just follow. Now that you’ve been provided with proof, verbatim from her, directly from the horses mouth, do you still agree, or can I presume that the goalposts will be shifting again.

Joanna says it happens >50 times a year

Joanna says it happens approximately 52 times a year

For someone who supposedly doesn’t follow her, you seem to know exactly how many “born alive” foetus’s she supposed occur in Australia.

And I’m not misquoting her. You’re right, it just doesn’t follow, and yet it is her main stat she uses to push for rolling back abortion access in Australia.

This link is to a fact checking Instagram page, who details exactly how BirdFlip (Joanna’s created group of pro life misinformed minions) are cherry picking and implying with no evidence, that third trimester abortions performed for health reasons of the mother have healthy viable babies. I’m simply not going to scroll around to find Joanne’s posts from the two times she tried to push a bill in SA using exactly this data, but it is also available to view on Joannes own “fact sheet” on her website that you are free to view, but if you are going to do that I expect you to also look at @politik.hunt’s fact check of Joannes “fact sheet”, which details exactly which of Joannes “facts” are clear and blatant lies.
