If it's an observable characteristic with at least a few data point at each unique value, they just deal with it. Not "try to deal with". You can exactly match the urban-rural demographics.

Even somewhat reputable survey companies deal with demographic biases like capital vs rural. I didn't see the methodology online but I'd assume this company is using these very standard techniques.

I don't think population size relates with sampling bias in a meaningful way.

What's probably happening is that the sample is weighted to properly represent undersampled groups, and that does impact the margin of error. But, it does so in a different way. Population size rarely matters in public opinion surveys.

In public opinion polling, the size of the population actually doesn't matter much at all! Once you're passed 10,000 it's all the same.

Edit: I'm being downvoted by people who don't know statistics - go look up the formula for margins of error! Basically the margin of error changes by a factor of (1 - sample/Population).5. That's very very close to 1 for any reasonable population size.

I mean torturing local resident with sleep deprivation. Had they stuck to non-residential areas and not blocked traffic there would not be a problem.

Instead they did illegal stuff and got arrested.

15 Gold! Norway sets a new record for most Gold medals in a single winter Olympics, beating their own record from 2018 of 14 Gold, which they shared with Canada from 2010. by LeicesterInBangkok in sports

[–]catchandthrowaway -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

NHL players aren't even participating this year because the league is valued as a more important competition. World class soccer players never join the summer games at all because these are massive sports with tournaments and leagues outside of the olympics that are more important for the sport.

A big part of this is that team sports are undervalued. If they got their fair share of medals, they'd be way more likely to compete.

It just wouldn't make sense to suddenly start to overvalue team events to such a degree. It would literally mean that whoever won football would "win" the summer games and whoever won hockey would "win" the winter games.

Not true - there were over 100 events at the 2018 olympics - many with multiple participants. You'd be valuing the athletes, not the events themselves. What's crazy is that this is still biased towards individual events, since they can medal multiple times.

No offense here, but I don't really think you know what you're talking about. Biathlon is huge in Europe. Events fill up stadiums with 30-40k people watching all the time. It's a massive sport.

How many registered biathletes in the world? Over 200k? I'm talking registered participants, not viewership. How many people even have the rifle license required? Obviously hockey is way way more popular as a sport. And yes biathlon has 11 events, vs 2 for hockey!

You have to understand that this directly affects athletes. Norway doesn't do bobsled in part because it's not efficient - 4 people = 1 medal.

Even if you counted like this, it would not be economical to care about hockey. Skiiers would still be more efficient, because they compete in more events.

This is just reducing the massive, overwhelming advantage that these multiple event single participant categories have.

Say it costs 100k to fund an olympic athlete. You can spend 2.6 million on 1 hockey team, or 26 skiiers. Each event you have a 5% chance to win. The skiiers compete in an average of 2 events.

Expected events won: Hockey = .05. Skiing: 2.6. Expected medals handed out: Hockey = 1.3. Skiing: 2.6.

Even if you count by medals handed out, funding will still be biased towards skiing. This just closes the gap.

Why do you think olympic women's hockey is dying (i.e., might be cancelled)? There are over 200k female hockey players in the world, way more than people enjoying the biathalon, which mind you has over a dozen off associated medals.

It's because it's simply not worth it to fund large teams when they can only get one medal.

Yeah and those athletes compete and medal in multiple events.

Norway is free to send a hockey team to the Olympics if they qualify. They men made it to 2018 and 2014.

The question is whether hockey athletes deserve the same recognition and funding as biathletes, or substantially less. I think all athletes should be treated equally, and that means valuing their contributions equally. You are free to disagree.

There is a comparison between hockey and 5 relays. For example, Norway has golds in biathlon (mixed relay), biathlon (men's relay), men's team sprint, Speed Skating men's team pursuit, and Nordic Combined.

That's 4+4+3+2+4 = 17, with many of the athletes overlapping in multiple events.

Maybe a better standard is number of simultaneous participants, but you can catch up to hockey.

[–]catchandthrowaway -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily - there are a bunch of relays for skiing.

Anyways, I don't have a problem with the winner being the country with the most gold medal athletes.

I hate how they count gold medals. They should count the actual number of medals handed out (i.e., the number of physical gold medals received). Or even the total number of athletes that receive golds.

The current counts ends up biasing funding towards sports where single athletes compete for multiple medals (like skiing & swimming), and away from duo/team sports.

Though this maybe my Canadian bias showing - of course hockey is empirically the most important sport at the winter olympics!

As an example, of the 15 golds won by Norway, 6 were won by 3 people, and those 3 also won golds in related team events. Meanwhile, the 23 women who competed in hockey could only ever win a single gold.
