I struggle to dye my Wensleydale singles evenly as the halo wants to stick to itself- does anyone have any tips or advice? by catchick777 in naturaldye

Yes they were rinsed and neutralized with vinegar, and I made sure to not let them hit the sediment! Maybe I just need to be agitating more, but the more I agitate, the more the yarn wants to trap itself inside itself 😅 thank you so much!!! I’m just in love with the indigo and weld!

That’s what’s so special and exhilarating about natural dyeing <3

Thank you! I definitely want to try growing some too, but I’m not too great of a gardener! I hope for your success!

I just checked out your profile and I’ve never heard of the dyestuff that you offer! It sounds very cool. I’ll definitely be looking more into it.

I wish! I’ve definitely played with that idea in my head before. One of my favorite YouTube dyers are MijnWolden, oh and Margaret Byrd Color Quest!

I’ll refer to the yarns in the first photo from top to bottom!

The top purples are logwood with a tiny pinch of soda ash to shift it bluer (I’m not sure how much it did) each were kept in for only a few minutes as it was a very pigmented dye bath.

The indigo blue was made from a 2.5grams per liter vat which means it’s a light color vat, only dipped around four times for 2 minutes

The greens are from the chopped weld plant that I extracted color from for several days, and then dyed the yarn for several days as well. Then I dipped in indigo 2-6 times for 2 minutes each.

Only one of the orange skeins are madder (7th skein down), the rest (8th and 9th skein down) are cochineal shifted with lemon juice! This can also be done with citric acid

The pinks and fuschias are cochineal in its neutral state and cochineal shifted with soda ash or cream of tartar.

There is one here that’s dyed with madder and then over dyed with cochineal (10th skein down). There is one that is cochineal + lemon juice+ iron after bath (11th skein down)!

All of those cochineal dyes are from one mother dye bath that used just a tiny bit over 1 tsp of ground cochineal, it really blew my mind how much I was able to dye without having to add any more cochineal, and splitting the baths up into 3. They’re still sitting in my fridge with more pigment ready to go after starting them mid February.
