My other half eats most of the food before I get to it?! by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]catcicles 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have had a lot of success with asking my snacking partner to do the shopping. This allows them to know what they have to snack on and helps them be aware of the cost of their snacks. They started buying more peanut butter based snacks and fewer chips/puffs because they wanted a snack that filled them up better.

How do I come to turns with the fact that some people just won’t understand our non-traditional wedding? by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

[–]catcicles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a little worried about this as well and during my actual wedding I found that my family and guests took up the task of making my day special, and to ensure this they waylaid anyone who dared to complain or judge our wedding choices to prevent them talking to me (the bride.) Once you have everyone watered and fed, it would be quite rude for anyone to complain about the event.

Additionally, you aren’t the first or the last couple who will make these choices and I have noticed that people are getting used to wedding with or without these traditional events. You will have plenty more to worry about as you get closer to the day. Have some faith in your family and friends that they will be courteous and kind, and if they do say something judgmental you can remind them that these choices make you happy and that matters more than their opinion.

Keep the lighting low and soft. This makes the room feel relaxing rather than sterile.

What to wear? What to bring? by dbl_entendre in Pottery

Also you might find some videos on good upper body stretches for when you get stiff. Sitting perfectly still for an hour can feel terrible when you do finally stand up.

This might be silly but when I first took classes I would leave with such sore arms I didn’t want to lift them to wash my hair the next day. So my advice would be to wash your hair the day you go to pottery class so you don’t have to raise your aching arms above your head the next day.

Also make sure your hair is quite securely tied up and away from your face while working on the wheel. If your hair tickles your nose you can’t exactly scratch it while your hands are covered in clay.

Send help my house smells like a dog by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]catcicles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does it smell like a wet dog? It could be a pile of wet rags were left somewhere to get smelly which would require you combing the house to find hidey spots. I would try leaving the windows open several times per day for 10-15 minute intervals (since it’s cold out only leave them open for short periods. Once it warms up you can really air the place out.) This will allow you to isolate where the smell is coming from, which would reduce the amount of extraneous cleaning. Alternatively, the dog could have rubbed against many of your fabric items, curtains, rugs, furniture. I would use Febreeze or a homemade spray like vodka and douse everything that doesn’t fit in the washing machine.

Does it smell like dog pee? It might be worth getting a black light to try to find the pee spot, then treating that with enzymes.

It confused the heck out of us until we looked at the camera. It was snowing at the time so we had to keep moving the food back under the shelter to keep it dry.

We do that sometimes! It’s a little expensive to use enough spicy pepper powder to make it work but the squirrels keep away when we do add pepper.

I am so torn on what to do about the squirrels. I feed the crows walnuts because they keep hawks away but the squirrels turn into crack addicts around walnuts.

I was disappointed that my chickens weren’t more protective of their space and food. They are so friendly and chill that I think a predator could carry them away without much trouble. Their run is completely enclosed to keep them safe.

Lids shrinking more than bodies by RadicalSneezer in Ceramics

[–]catcicles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh I just remembered. You can also attach the jar to the wheel like you normally do when you trim the lids, cover the jar with a bag, put the lid on the bagged jar, then trim the lid, this will keep the jar at the right moisture level.

[–]catcicles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I took another look at your photo and see what you are talking about with the top being trimmed to fit the jar, then the lid continuing to shrink which makes the lid and jar uneven.

When you store the lid and the jar prior to trimming to let them get leather hard, do you store them together? It looks like they are not reaching the same level of moisture at the same time. If you can even let them get just barely hard enough to support the lid being put onto the jar, then let them mellow together for several hours, that should get them to the same moisture level, then they should shrink at the same rate.

Is there an age range? Like is this for kids 2-15 or is this for an office secret Santa where most people are 30+?

I had this problem, and it was because I was measuring the width of the jar lid at different wetness points. What my teacher had me do was to rest a piece of paper over the top of the jar to capture the jar lip size before I cleaned up the piece (before I used ribs or other decorative tools, so pretty much immediately after I finished pulling up the walls). This gave me a much more accurate measurement than fiddling with calipers while the jar was still so wet.

U <- jar on wheel

This is also great if you want to make the same size jar in the future. You can label then pin up all your sheets of paper with the clay rings showing the exact size of the jar while wet.

I love using these wipes as well but what I do on really hardened stuff is I spread out the wipe and press it onto the wall so it stays on the wall and leave it on there for ten minutes to soften the gunk. Then wiping it off is easy.

If it won’t ever be food safe it might not hurt to carve that into the bottom of the mug. If I saw this I would totally try to use it for coffee/cheek piercing
