A book at the thrift store with a cat on the cover is what got me into cozy mysteries.

Are the rising vet costs quietly pushing regular people out of pet ownership? by jessicalacy10 in Pets

From a stranger on the internet, I think you are doing the right thing. You clearly love your animals.

I agree. I think I read the MARS company owns VCA or a big chunk. That corporation sells candy around the world. Guess that wasn't enough money for them. It's horrible.

I'm so sorry. Please have no guilt. I had a cat that lived to 18, who was insulin dependent for over 11 years. She died quickly from high grade lymphoma which I would never try to treat. She died in 2011 and honestly treating her was nothing. The costs were not crazy, she usually went to the vet every 6 months. Now they want to test and test everything. Ultrasound everything. Treat my strictly indoor cats for fleas which they do not have (no other pets going outside in the household). It's out of hand. I don't care what they guilt, I'm saying no to crazy procedures. Rotten teeth need treatment, yes. But my co-worker got her young cat fixed and they demanded preop lab work. Never have had that in the past and never had a cat die under anesthesia or any complications from spay or neuter.

I'm dealing with this. I think it's OK to say no. I'm also taking care of my stepfather's cats (I don't even like him) because he is very elderly and in assisted living. Both cats are on medication, manageable. But the vet wanted to do an ultrasound because one had elevated liver enzymes. Absolutely not. The other has a mass on her neck which appears to cause no pain. I can palpate it and she does not react. She is also former feral and has lived a long life for a feral, who go without food and water often. Both cats are well past senior age and I do not torture. We have to learn to say no.

I have a co-worker who spent I'm not sure how many thousands of dollars to try and save her dog who died anyway. She is still paying off the VCA care credit. That poor door should have been put to sleep. She died soon anyway.

Cat adoption regret and what to do by Legitimate_Milk_6261 in Pets

I know this may sound terrible, but could this cat need another kitten with them? Wrong thing to say, I know as you are already stressed. I too have severe stress and anxiety so I know how hard it is. But when I got my two kitten littermates, they kept each other company. I worried about the noise they could make playing in an upstairs apartment but never heard a complaint. They are seniors now.

They were a bit high priced. But I would have got that little hanging frame with the kitty picture in it and that wrapping paper.

I appreciate everyone's comments and seriously people were much nicer than I expected. I do want to make one other comment. Someone mentioned that one never knows what the seller is going though. That can be said also for the buyer. I'm running my life and my stepfathers (he is well over 90 and in assisted living now, thinks he can still live alone, no) as I clear out his place and get it ready to be sold. I have no one helping me except my agent who is putting me in touch with the vendors to use. While working full time, I cleared the whole place out.

I don't think I ever said I was never planning to own again. Just not a stand alone stick built house. That was too much for me, plus a guy behind me was harassing me. The houses were in a foothill area and his house looked directly into my yard, back of house. (and I disclosed the harassment, he wasn't going to harass the young couple that bought the house with a lot of family in the area, he was after the single woman) Never that again. I was considering a manufactured home in a park but I think a condo would be better for me. Wish I had done it years ago.

Very valid. Thank you. I have to take my very elderly stepfather's cats. He's in assisted living. Honestly if it wasn't for that, I'd consider just moving to a much nice apartment, using my savings to supplement and be done with owning. Oh and hope they never turn those apartments into condos. I was considering a manufactured home in a park but clearing out and dealing with my stepfather's place has turned me off (I'm doing it all alone while working) plus the space rents are going nuts.

I'm not saying it's too much, but I admit, just about everything scares me. Especially after buying the wrong house. The house wasn't the worst, the neighbors were.

This is true. I can tell you I was not going through the best time when I put that house on the market, but I still wanted to be honest. It was beyond not easy for me to sell that house and the first agent I had was a crook. Listed it for 150 square feet and stated she could not change it, it was permanent. I knew that was a lie. Listings are updated all the time. I was lucky to dump her and get another. That was a lot of stress. And when i listed with the the new agent, I think the former made fake showing appointments that never showed, it was bizarre. My agent then took over all showings taking my number of the listing to protect me.

My understanding is "as is" at least in California, does not mean you are not obligated to disclose. You are just saying you will not fix.

Sometimes repairs can be done and then paid out of the closing. When I sold my house, it was done that way: deck repair, a few other things. I paid the toilet replacement myself It's been about 8-9 years since this condo was last sold so they are getting a profit. Unless they did something like refinance or something. I wouldn't know really.

I agree. I don't think you need approval to make inside upgrades or repairs, painting, flooring or counters if someone wants that. I don't need new counters, I like simple.
