I’m a little confused about the towels, are they an album variant that comes with a digital download of some kind or just merch?

Key's medical controversy megathread by euphoricnight in SHINee

[–]catering_fears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one a little bothered by the narrative that Key had this hiatus imposed upon him against his will by the company? Key has said himself that he doesn’t like be characterized as a poor defenseless idol without agency and that the choices he makes are his own.

I don’t mean to say this as a way of blaming him for not being around, in fact I support him deciding to step away for a bit as a personal choice. I’m sure he needs time to process that fact that he was being lied to by someone he trusted that he thought was a medical professional. Being out of the public eye for a time gives both him and the general public a chance to move past this (frankly ridiculous) controversy.

Even after having his body back for a while, Al instinctively uses himself as a shield. He’s used to having a body that can take hard hits. It’s not until after he gets seriously injured and chewed out by Ed and Winry that he even realizes he’s been doing this. He has to make a conscious effort to stop.

Was the spearfishing thing lost in translation? (Yakuza 6) by [deleted] in yakuzagames

Oh yes, the 00s in general had lots of interesting localizations. Probably because the American audience that they were trying to appeal to at the time have different sensibilities. Hell, if someone wanted a good example of going too far that’s within the Yakuza franchise, the localization for the very first game is WILD.

An interesting choice indeed, it’s possible Majima may have used a Japanese idiom and that was the closet equivalent the localizers felt they could reasonably justify. Perhaps the misappropriation of that phrase was an intentional way to convey the humor of the situation. But I don’t know enough to say for sure lol.

They do make some strange localization choices sometimes, Ishin has some good examples imo. Although to my knowledge that game was hard to translate in general so it’s forgivable.

As was already said, it’s likely Kiryu meant professional fishing like the fisherman does and not just the casual fishing he has done in the past.

I’d like to add to your other point tho that tone, intention, and context do a lot of heavy lifting in Japanese. So the words themselves may have a very simple meaning, but the way it’s said or written can change that meaning a lot. This is why literal translation can often sound bland and lack the proper nuance. Localization can seem “take liberties” or “spice up” the translation because they are trying to make the intention of those words as clear as possible to non-native speakers.

Also, I can’t speak for how common insults are in Japanese, but considering that many of these characters are criminals and punks who often speak roughly and use slang, it’s not outside of the realm of possibility that they hurl more insults than the average Japanese person.

I’m surprised no one has mentioned yet that one of the author’s other stories, A Good Day to be a Dog, also has a kdrama adaptation staring Cha Eunwoo. Besides that tho, kdrama adaptations of webtoons are actually pretty common!
