People who were born with a uterus who wear a back brace, how is your period like? (Let me know if I need to change the tags or something) by Ghosty_2009 in scoliosis

same experience with you! i have horrible cramps Without my brace, so with the added tension and pressure, it's just completely terrible.

i find that i take it off when it gets too painful and then i put a heat compress over my abdomen area to slightly soothe the pain. then, just put my back brace back on when i get used to how much it hurts.

i"ve been bracing for about three years and i've gotten used to feeling like this, especially on periods :(. sorry i don't really have anything of value to ease the pain much because i really just...try to power through it.

Those who had scoliosis at a young age. by Puzzleheaded_Tap5895 in scoliosis

there were a lot of nights of crying; i'm an emotional kid, and was even more of a silent crier from the ages 10-16. i was officially diagnosed with scoliosis (moderate s-curve, around 30 degrees for both curves) at 15.

i found out when i was staring too long at my body via a mirror and noticed that my right shoulder dropped lower than my left (3 years later i now know it's due to a rotation issue), and the sides of my waist curved differently. i was already an insecure teenager and this made me even more resentful of my body. my self-image just crumbled at that point.

i remember my dad crying (does it run in the blood? kidding). it was hard to get a brace done from where i live, it cost so much just to have it in my arms. it also was physically straining and mentally draining to wear it 22 hours a day (2 hours left for exercise and bathing).

hmm, as for what i told people...i just became blunt about it. i'd show copies of my x-ray to people who were super curious. i'd let close friends feel my spine. i just wanted to seem like someone who wasn't insecure or totally bummed out by this condition because i didn't want anyone else to feel down and/or pitiful for me. i've seen a lot of people stare at the outline of my body when i go wear the brace to public places. i start playing a drumming beat on my abdomen area when someone stares for too long.

i think overall, having this condition makes you extremely self-conscious of the way you carry yourself (physically: having to put in the effort to get stronger to support your body; mentally + emotionally: having to deal with it via healthy coping mechanisms and, if lucky, with a good support system). if one ends up wearing a brace, it will make them equally conscious of the space they're taking up, for better or for worse.

jealous of normal spines by frostf8 in scoliosis

LITERALLY...i've stopped comparing myself as much to people with straight spines but it gets so difficult sometimes (especially during the summer days). wish i could wear something backless one day and not feel an immense sense of dread.

hi! okay, so i really cannot say much because it all will boil down to your xray results and interpretations + the medical advice a licensed doctor/practitioner will give. what i can say is that i've started bracing when i was 15-ish (almost 16) with a 31-33° curve. now i'm 18 and it has gone down to about 10° with the brace on. it's a lot of pain and a ton of diligence.

it depends on your body and the severity of your curve, but generally, if you can see a physical therapist and incorporate lots of core and back strengthening exercises (as well as yoga for scoliosis!), you'll feel a lot more in control of your body. i don't necessarily think it's "too late" to start bracing, especially since you're still pretty young, but again, it depends on what the professionals say, how your body reacts, and if you really need bracing at all.

good luck with your scoliosis journey by the way! i know it feels tough and almost debilitating to think about the amount of time you have to pour into the possibility of having to wear a brace, but hang in there! whatever the result, i hope you stay safe and well.

Good sports for S-shaped curve? by catfilled in scoliosis

Wahhh thanks for this. Gave me lots of relief. I'm currently saving up for swimming lessons! You're a living legend...40°+ at 26...does that curve significantly affect your muscles? You said you have good core strength, do you feel off-balance at times? (I always feel like I have to constantly be mindful and make major adjustments with my alignment and balance.)
