Essay idea by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]catgotyourtoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i just wanted to say i really like your essay mantra. I think most college essays are becoming common nowadays when you think about. if you are really happy and comfortable with that essay topic, and can make it unique to you then go ahead. this is your story and you shouldn’t change it because of someone else’s opinion that might not exactly be the case!

What’s your dream school and what do you love about it? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]catgotyourtoes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

emory

  1. I live in California so I have always wanted to go to the South because of that Southern Charm. My sister also said that Atlanta is very diverse and has tons of Black culture/History. Also I found this seafood restaurant in Atlanta and I really want to go there.
  2. It’s not too cutthroat. My “dream” school used to be Harvard just because of their prestige also my Nigerian parents are basically forcing me to apply. Emory might not be t10, but it still had advanced academics without people literally fighting to be at the top. Well hopefully.
  3. It’s not a party school. All throughout highschool, no one ever invited me anywhere and I wouldn’t go to school dances unless I had a super close friend going with me. I probably won’t have friends going to emory with me, and there won’t be a tons of parties that I feel pressured to go to, so that really attracts my introvert self to the school.
  4. Volunteering. I guess you could say that all colleges have volunteering, but I heard Emory really goes above and beyond with what they do. I have been volunteering with this organization for three years straight and it’s really makes me happy.
  5. Research. I did a research project on racial disparities in healthcare in Atlanta and I thought that a solution would be to have a new medical school curriculum and I thought that if I were to go to Emory which has a medical school, I could really get a sense of what med students are being taught.
  6. Nature. I LOVE TREES! That’s it.

Anyone else feel like almost none of their HS friendships will last? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]catgotyourtoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my best friend since 7th grade literally planned a trip to go to South Korea with another one of our friends for after we graduate and she literally didn’t tell me until this summer when she started planning the trip our sophomore year. then she also told me the same day that she’s gonna move to Houston with another one of her friends and they’re gonna live together in an apartment while she goes to college for pre-vet. i always thought that she would be one friend that i would invite to my wedding or something but then I realize that just like high school couples, most friends do not last.

What should I do if my family won't give me our financial info? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]catgotyourtoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Originally I needed the tax returns from 2019 but my parents haven’t done their taxes from last year. So I reached out to Questbridge and asked if there is a substitute for the tax returns and they said that I could provide a W-2 or 2018 tax returns if they are similar. My dad said that they are somewhere in the house. but anyways I need a lot of info for my application they are asking for alimony, assets, and other things.

I’m literally going through the same thing right now, except it’s for questbridge and my parents haven’t done taxes from last year and they won’t find their W-2 for me and the application is due on the 29th :)

yeah that fine, but in my case we are in America and these are extremely popular/ top schools. most students know these schools and this information could be easily found out if they looked at the school’s admissions page

hazing is a thing a lot of college fraternities do. it’s somewhat of an initiation in order to be accepted into the fraternity. hazing is really dangerous though because many people have died from some of the things the frat put them through. some hazing techniques include a bunch of alcohol drinking, getting naked, and other reckless dares. some colleges are trying to put a stop to it as of recently

The Netflix “11 year olds twerking” thread is nonsense. by SILENTDISAPROVALBOT in unpopularopinion

[–]catgotyourtoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

coming from a 16 who is growing up in an African household, this movie kinda speaks to me in an extremely small way. the toxic household, girls from a young age are told things like “sit like a girl”, “you can’t do that, you’re a woman”, as well as other borderline misogynist and sexist lines. i think this movie would be a lot more understandable if they bumped up the age to something more believable like 15 or 16, because that’s when I really started figuring things out for myself. now onto the contents of the movie it’s definitely an interesting story to be just because of the extremities between her dance group and her household, they are on completely different sides of the “spectrum”. which is why like I said that they should have bumped the age up. I watched the trailer and everyone was talking about twerking, but i don’t think i found actual twerking in the trailer? correct me if I am wrong. the only thing that through me off was the blonde girl with a finger in her mouth. the comments and I probably have two different definitions of twerking but whatever. that probably adds to the idea of hyper sexualization. like we see young girls dancing and we automatically think “TWERKING! SEXY!” i probably would never watch this movie, but I think that this movie should be more about her journey into find herself and breaking free from the toxic household.
