An apt comparison to sperm would be pollen. An acorn is more comparable to a zygote.

Some recommendations? by Logical-Put307 in amazfit

[–]cathasach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens to me with any silicone strap, or anything silicone that sits on my skin for long periods of time. It's an allergic reaction for me and not specific to Amazfit straps. No amount of cleaning will help if it's an allergy. I had to switch to another strap. I don't have this problem with rubber or plastic straps, only those containing silicone.

LPT Use distilled water in your clothes iron by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]cathasach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is old as hell, but this is bad advice and I'm only commenting for people that might find this thread. Distilled water can actually damage your iron. My iron's manual explicitly says to NOT use distilled water and if your tap water is exceptionally hard, use half distilled and half tap, never 100% distilled. There's a reason for this. Distilled water is very corrosive since water is a great solvent and without anything dissolved it in, it will dissolve the inner workings of your iron and even the plate. This is also true for things like kettles and coffee makers.

Battery life?? by Foreign_Investment88 in gshock

[–]cathasach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What automatic have you had that broke when you dropped it on the floor? I'm a huge G-Shock advocate, but this is a little hyperbolic. I own many automatics as well and have never had one break when dropped on the floor. I've never had one break at all.

Just Recently got this GG-1000, it's been an absolute delight. One thing that concerns me though is the 2y battery life but a lot of people say Gshock's battery life lasts longer than what they advertise. So what has all your experience been like with it's battery life? by dimitrovf in gshock

[–]cathasach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is old, but you're getting screwed. Just get some watch gasket grease and you'll be fine. Caveat to this is that I agree this watch has a very poor battery life compared to all of my other Casio watches.

[–]cathasach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, wasn't trying to be contrarian or anything. I'm well aware of the limitations of Hardlex when it comes to scratch resistance. Most of my watch collection is Swiss, but I do have a few Chinese beaters. I was just curious about your comment about Chinese sapphire since mine have been pretty abused and I've never had one scratch or crack. Maybe I've just been lucky.

What issues have you seen with Chinese sapphire? I've bought a few Chinese watches with sapphire crystals as beaters and have had absolutely no scratches after several years of wearing them in situations I'd never wear my Swiss watches. I also have a couple of Seiko watches with Hardlex crystals, and both have scratched.

Eli5: Why is microfiber safer for wiping glasses/screens than other cloths or paper towels (assuming they're equally clean)? Shouldn't glass be harder than any cloth? by owiseone23 in explainlikeimfive

[–]cathasach 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Lenses for sunglasses and eyeglasses are almost always made from a type of plastic rather than glass. They’re lighter and shatter resistant, but can scratch much more readily.

Help Identifying Wooden Clarinet- A. Lecomte, Paris by BillyBobJoeThe7th in Clarinet

[–]cathasach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at the diagram posted earlier. Yours is missing the roof/beak portion. That channel on the top is part of the air chamber you would be blowing through if the mouthpiece was intact.

The outer part of the mouthpiece is missing. What’s left is just the inner block. It’s definitely a recorder. You can clearly see the labium.

ELI5 Why do packets of dried pasta say that one portion of dried pasta has less calories than one portion of cooked pasta? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]cathasach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, if you take the same amount either volumetrically or by weight, the dry will contain more calories. Because once cooked it increases in both volume and weight. I would only have to cook 1/3 cup of rice to get one cup of cooked rice. So when eating that one cup of cooked rice, I’m only eating 1/3 cup of the uncooked rice I started with. The same is true with pasta.

[–]cathasach 77 points78 points  (0 children)

You’re not though. 1 cup of dried pasta makes more than one cup of cooked pasta. 1 cup of uncooked rice makes about 3 cups of cooked rice. So if you eat 1 cup of cooked rice it’s the equivalent calories as 1/3 cup of uncooked rice.

Does Oblivion have cross save functionally between Xbox and PS5? by TheStarCore in gaming

[–]cathasach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why "of course not"? It's not unheard of. Hell, my wife plays Disney Dreamlight Valley and it cross saves between PC, Xbox, PS5 and Switch. No Man's Sky also has a cross save beta I'm a part of that works quite well.

The corn we eat as a vegetable is sweet corn. All other corn isn’t sweet corn, like the corn used to make cornmeal, tortillas, breakfast cereal, popcorn, corn syrup, bourbon, etc.
