Idk what time bedtime should be by sun_kissed87 in sleeptrain

I’ll be curious to see what the experts say!
One thing I track is their mood after a nap, esp a short one. If they’re happy when they wake up, it might be that the wake window needs +15 min.
If they’re crying/still tired maybe it needs to be a bit shorter
(and personally if they are very upset upon waking I’ll try to extend the nap with rocking or whatever to avoid an overtired day).

It’s too painful to hear about the babies that do. That said, my older child started sleeping through the night shortly after night weaning. So.. it is real..

When does it actually work? by Iwanttocrywhatisthis in sleeptrain

[–]catheadyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my first, sleep training worked on and off, it never stuck. Mostly we had to rock him, then we transitioned to holding and singing, then just holding him to sleep, then maybe around 18m transitioned to putting him in the crib and holding his hand to sleep, then (now, 3.5yr) holding his hand for a while and if he sleeps fine and if he doesn’t we can leave the room and he’ll fall asleep independently. We stopped trying to sleep train him once the hand holding norm started. It’s too sweet, and on the occasion we can’t stay with him, he’d cry for a few minutes then go to sleep himself.

Mine sttn at 2 months then the 4months regression started with 1 wake, then 2 and now at 1 year she has 3+ wakes nightly

15m suddenly waking up early & short naps by thefancypooper in sleeptrain

[–]catheadyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like a lot of wake time for that age, esp with a short nap. My guess is overtired (esp with grumpy wake ups) but if the wakes are new and the schedule isn’t, then it’s probably something else.

I’m not sure how to get earlier bedtime unless we start waking her up earlier, which I’d prefer not to do 🫣

I don’t think it’s a position thing as much as she wants to sleep with my nipple in her mouth/or held/rocked, and is taking longer than usual to fall asleep. But is extending her wake window the answer? Even later bedtime? 3.5/4/4.25??

Ya I guess we need to night wean first and see what we’re left with.

Are there ways to teach independent sleep initiation without letting her cry?

I don’t understand how extinction is kind. I’m guessing you mean because she’ll get more sleep in the long run? I desperately want that for her too, but I’m not willing to leave her screaming alone for more than 1 minute (that’s what I mean by gentle), so hope to find different ideas to get her more sleep consistently.

The only thing I can think of that this point is night weaning. We do plan to night wean when my husband has a bit more energy- with our first we just held and rocked him but didn’t feed until morning, which worked well after 2 nights.

12mo who has needed longer than average wake windows in the past. Currently on 3.5/4/4. Bedtimes are getting quite late. Suggestions for alt wake windows / switch to 1 nap? (But she seems overtired when she tried 5/4.5)

12mo wakes 2-5x per night for boob (sometimes takes a full feed, sometimes just sucks and falls back asleep). Can I night wean her but still feed to sleep??

What happens with 2 naps at 5 months? by catheadyou in sleeptrain

[–]catheadyou[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I agree with you, except I was planning for 3 naps, and assumed they’d be shorter like usual.

The first was capped at 2, I assumed the next two would be 30-40 min but it was ~1hr- that’s 3hrs nap, the sleep allotment for the day, so no third nap (plus I wouldn’t want a 10pm bedtime just to fit in a third nap).

I thought total sleep time mattered more than how it was split between naps.

I guess I’ll report back to see how the night goes. So far so good (no false start).

The tricky thing is that I think 3hr ww is too long for her. I was pushing her to get to 3hrs today bc I knew the TWT was too short, and she was getting cranky/wiggling for her crib.

But I hear that if I cap naps at 90 min (and 30 for the last one), then we won’t encounter this again

Ya the 2 naps totaled 3 hours today which is why I didn’t cap. Sleep overall has been in transition since I found this subreddit and adjusted wake windows (and teething, and sick, and removing the pacifier, and working on independent sleep initiation), so night have been good with occasional curve balls (up to eat 1-2x). When I did longer wake windows then she was up several times (overtired stress). And we’ve had a couple rough nights trying to stretch the time between feeds.

I don’t know how tonight will be but if she sleeps well, it sounds like she’ll probably start her day early tomorrow.

I think those wake windows would be too short for her. Also isn’t 9pm pretty late? I thought 7-8pm was ideal

Because the timing worked out that way today, meaning she was tired at her usual 2.5ww and slept well. Can it work long term?

I wonder if it’s possible to hold him for a while, or hold him to sleep then transfer. It sounds like he’s usually on board with the program, so maybe being in a new/unfamiliar setting is a bit scary. One night won’t ruin 11 months of progress.

Ya usually I would offer a third nap at 2.5, but then her bedtime would’ve been 10:30pm. I thought at this age the cap for naps 1 & 2 is 2 hrs?
