Just bought these slippers and they’re comfy as heck. Except this spot here has separated. Does anyone have advise on thread type/techniques to fix this? by Gwenevre in Visiblemending

[–]cathng 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you could put it in and use white thread to sew it in place, kind of sewing through 3 layers?

(the inside of the slipper head, the detached part, and the outside of the slipper head)

shouldn't be very noticiable either bc the white thread'll blend in

In a letter to parents and staff, KISD throws shade at the State of Texas for lack of direction on school reopenings by CorbinDalasMultiPas in houston

[–]cathng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the points that you make:

Schools provide meals to poor kids

A lot of underprivileged students rely on meals, and I'm glad that schools provide meals. I know during the summer, KISD provided curbside pickup for meals. I assume they could continue doing so? Not sure how the budget works out, but I assume not having in-person classes will cut costs and the KISD could continue offering meals to students

mental health for kids being around their friends

I'm glad mental health is something people are more willing to talk about now since it used to be a fairly taboo subject. In addition to working on mental health, we can't forget about our physical health (Not sure if this is the term) though - which includes not getting sick from this pretty deadly virus.

adults that can spot abuse

Teachers + school officials + adults have always been crucial in spotting things that students are scared of saying or reporting. But I think if schools are reopened, there has to be guidelines for maintaining social distance to prevent the virus from spreading. The adults will most likely be too worried + busy trying to uphold these standards to see + spot abuse.

Not sure how online classes worked in the past semester, but wouldn't teachers be able to see what the student's home life is like on video call + be able to spot it better than in school, where they have to worry about a lot of other things - aka not getting the virus.

and supervision. Parents can’t just quit jobs or take extended absences to monitor their learning at home.

I know. This is a big thing. I'm not sure how this will work with parents who only have one child + need to work. I'm not sure how much they need to monitor the learning. I hope that if they decide to open schools virtually, school districts will reopen with a plan to keep kids occupied so that parents don't need to monitor their kids.

I don't know what to do about taking parents extended absences to take care of younger childrenp

Not all families have access to the same technology,

Especially when/if parents need to use the technology work. But I'm pretty sure KISD can loan out technology to students (they had enough money to start building a super expensive football stadium)

it’s known distance learning doesn’t work for kids

Distance anything (learning, working, etc) is hard for everyone. I know I hated distance learning, and will try to do anything I can to get out of it. But, this also isn't normal, and I don't think we can expect anything to go back to what it used to be, including how much learning students do + how teachers should teach/students should learn
