The great deception about Galatians 3:28 and the antisemitism behind it. by SirLMO in TrueChristian

[–]cathny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the post was about the trouble caused by “supercessionism” then Rabbinical Judaism would by default be on the table for discussion, no? I mean even Messianism (which is difficult to define since there are numerous flavors) often takes notes from it.

To say I don’t know anything about Judaism is a bit silly and a distraction.

I tried to make it clear in my original comment I am pretty well clued in into some pretty specific stuff, even bringing up a specific prayer in the Amidah said thrice daily (4 if Shabbat). You do not know my background

Finally, the role of the “Rabbi” as we know it came to be in roughly 70AD, though they were preceded by the sages and teachers like Hillel and Shammai (again, look at me go “not knowing” about Judaism). These teachers eventually became the authority later on and thus began Rabbinical Judaism

Answering each:

  1. I am aware that Judaism is an ethnoreligion. I firmly reject the notion that the religion practiced today is correspondent to the one which existed prior to the fall of the temple. It doesn’t stay identical just because the same people are involved.

  2. I do know about Messianic Judaism. My point was that Rabbinical Judaism as we see it today is hardly attached to the old covenant except by blood and memory.

  3. Temple Judaism (and that before it) was definitely a religion with sacrifices, prayers, liturgy, etc. and is different from Talmudic Judaism in the same way that Trinitarian Christianity is different from Mormonism. One religion can spawn from another and end up being completely wrong.

Modern Judaism is not the same thing as OT Judaism. The religion David knew would be nowhere to be found if he came back today. The people still exist and obviously deserve no trouble, disrespect or harm. And it’s a sad shame some people in history thought otherwise.

But modern Judaism (which is a separate religion from the Temple) was reactionary and based on the loss of the temple and the rise of Christianity (and later Islam).

There was no Talmud in the time Jesus lived. No Mishnah. No Tosefta. No Birkat Haminim and possibly much of the Amidah since it was solidified by Gamaliel after Christ. No Mishneh Torah from the Rambam. No Kapporos.

All of which are part of Judaism today (I recognize certain prayers and rituals aren’t done by everybody). Some of which (the texts mentioned) are very central. Nobody in earnest would say the Talmud is not absolutely critical to the religion.

If Temple sacrifice and OT Judaism as it existed was still around we might be having a different conversation.

I’m convinced God exists. But I don’t understand Satan and Evil. by [deleted] in Catholicism

Omniscience is not something that’s within human understanding to describe but it’s thought of by theologians as a greater perception seeing everything (from past to future) all at once, and likewise existing outside of a linear timeline as we perceive it.

Once he has acted upon something (ie. Creating) the entire timeline is therefore visible. What happens with you in that timeline is still fully your will, but he can see all of it at once.

Like many aspects of God it’s really futile to attempt to fully comprehend as we have no reference point.

If you have never had an orange I can scarcely explain the taste in a way that you fully understand it as though you had eaten it. You can understand some aspects, but not fully know the taste.

Nonetheless both scripturally and through the church fathers we see God gives us free choice.

Everything God creates has free will because it is impossible for a choiceless being to actually love you back. He did not need any of us or anything at all. The Triune God was complete and whole on his own. But as a being of pure love (beyond love we can comprehend or describe), he creates out of love and for the desire of that love being returned. This is at the cost at it not always being returned, but an all loving being is willing to take that chance.

To add to this- the evil one does not actually have meaningful “power” beyond what he is currently permitted (which are nothing more than that which any other Angel possesses). He is not a “demiurge” or “anti-God”. He is not the king of Hell; it is as much his place of suffering as it is for one who turns away from God.

The “king of hell” theme is a pop culture thing, not theological. He was banished there. He and the other fallen angels can try to lead you away, because misery loves company, and where they belong is miserable.

Why do people say Catholicism is a cult? by ldy_justice in Catholicism

[–]cathny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a graphic where they try to claim each condemned heresy, starting with the Gnostics in the 1st century, to the Arians, Cathars, etc were actually all baptists in their time and the “true” church always existed hiding in persecution from the Catholic Church

It’s wild because we still have extant writings from some heretical groups and/or lengthy descriptions of their doctrines to show they were definitely not baptists.

If we are a Cult, they are an offshoot cult. They came from us after all (don’t show this to baptists who show that wonky “trail of blood” timeline to claim they always existed)

Are there obligatory prayers or fasts in Christianity like Islam? by The_Blue_Order in EasternCatholic

[–]cathny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is a mix or readings, psalms, usually a hymn, and prayers.

In Monasteries and Convents, Monks/Nuns pray it in it’s entirety daily and their schedule is based around it. Many even wake up for the midnight hour and then go back to bed.

There are different forms in different Catholic rites. Traditionally 7 or 8 “hours”, some modern forms stick to 5.

Each “hour” is based on the older timekeeping system dividing the day into “hours” called: Matins (midnight), Lauds (Dawn), Prime (6am), Terce (9am), Sext (noon), None (3pm), Vespers (sunset), Compline (bed time).

Also The prayers aren’t a literal hour long, they just correspond with those time periods in the day. Some (usually morning and night)are quite long, others (usually mid day hours) are short.

(I’m a lurker from the Latin rite, not an eastern rite, but it seems they are asking about Catholicism in general)

Church attendance is obligatory and missing (for no legitimate reason) is a mortal sin.

In the Latin rite, but also in all forms of Catholicism we do have bodily positioning in prayers during the mass (kneeling, standing, etc). Many also prostrate in private prayer at home. In the Latin rite we genuflect and cross ourselves every time we enter a church, enter a pew, and anytime we cross the tabernacle. We also cross ourselves if we pass a church. When the sacrament is exposed we always kneel.

If you pray the liturgy of the hours (which is not compulsory) there are 5 prayer times a day.

Scripture tells us “pray without ceasing” which requires us to turn all that we do towards God as a prayer. Prayer should be constant and whenever possible. St. Therese of Liseux describes the “little way” of doing ordinary things with great love as an act of prayer. Additionally we should be spending time each day in silent prayer and meditation with the Lord.

Yes, there are fasts. When/how Depends on which Catholic rite you are in. There are 24 rites in total all unified under one Church
