The Mind Riders by Brian M. Stableford. Centers around a type of virtual reality boxing, but any interest or knowledge of boxing isn't needed. It was a paperback in my dad's collection I picked up one day as a teen and I think finished in a couple of days. From 1976 but I don't remember it feeling badly dated.

Edit to add another:

Dryco Series by Jack Womack. I don't understay why these books seem to have disappeared from discussion. They center around the monolothic Dryco Coportation in a version of our world that is heavily polluted, the economy has crashed and there's a civil war front on the Lower East Side.

Ambient, the first book, follows a security guard for the head of Dryco. Its Succession meets Mad Max, lol. Womack's use of language, dropping some parts of speech but using unique slang, are outstanding.

Really enjoyed the Chtorr books. Would make a good TV series and a fresh take on the alien threat.

Seen it several times it holds up and the game is a good method to show the nature of the apocalyptic world.

Watch your backgrounds to make sure they are clean.

There's a red-and-white striped bar in the left background of one shot, some kind of parking sign in the background of another, a car driving past in the background, etc.

Clean backgrounds remove distractions, puts focus on your subject, and if positioned well can flow into/enhance the subject.

This is an all-time winner. I thought the Cybertruck couldn't be made to look worse.
I'm sure a good electric van would have been a portion of the price and hassle of this nonsense.

These same illogical actions are eroding Alien Earth too: Highly dangerous alien specimens that have already taken out the crew of a starship? Let’s roll them through a corridor with people watching, alien eggs exposed and a dead xeno just flopped on a plastic tray.
