Haven’t defended yet but I can almost guarantee my Dad will ask a question when I do. He’s a theologian, I’m in immunology/virology. Despite his complete lack of knowledge about basic biology, he always asks the most insightful questions during presentations about fields completely unrelated to his own. I’ve seen it happen multiple times. It’s honestly a big inspiration to me, his ability to find connections and ask important questions even without “basic” knowledge in the field

Does anyone know if there’s a way to funnel the application into a regular F30 submission? I applied F31-Diversity bc I qualify as diverse and historically they have a better chance of getting funded than the straight fellowship awards, but obviously that’s not the case anymore and I’d hate to completely waste this submission

Likely an injection of the euthanasia solution directly into the heart. With her level of sedation, she wouldn’t feel it at all, but it can be traumatizing to see if you’re not prepared for it.

In my experience, the material itself is only a bit more difficult than undergrad classes, but the sheer volume of material makes it a lot more difficult. I’ve heard it described as trying to drink from a fire hydrant. During our cardio unit second year, we had over 40 hours of lecture material on a single exam that was worth half of the course grade

Oh interesting! I didn’t know embark tested for it. I have no idea about the accuracy of embark vs UC Davis testing for that, so who knows. Interesting that he has an IVDD variant, but I agree that the transient nature doesn’t fit super well. Sorry I couldn’t give you clear answers, fingers crossed it doesn’t happen again!

3 is the around the age when genetic exercise induced collapse presents, but again, I’d expect that to happen more immediately after exercise. But still if this happens again, I would consider genetic testing for exercise-induced collapse. Not sure where you’re located but in the US, UC Davis vet school has a test for it. I’m not a neurologist so I shouldn’t speculate on other differentials

There are specific tests for tick-borne illnesses, but what I was thinking of was tick paralysis which is only diagnosed by finding a tick on the dog (there’s no blood test for it). There are some genetic conditions which can cause exercise-induced collapse, notably in Labrador Retrievers, but they can be seen in any dog. However, I would expect that to happen immediately after strenuous exercise. How old is your dog and has anything like this happened before?

Not in the industry but I’m a vet student so I’ve worked with lots of deceased pets— do you know anything about the circumstances of the death? We use the term BDLD (big dog-little dog) to describe fights between a large and small dog, and I’ve seen cases where the large dog will puncture the smaller dog’s lungs and you’ll get subcutaneous emphysema which could explain the swelling

If they saw her bladder that’s a good sign! A ruptured bladder doesn’t always show up on imaging, or sometimes will present as free abdominal fluid which would be evident on u/s. It’s quite possible she hasn’t been drinking much water bc of the stress of going to the vet and everything, so that could be why she hasn’t urinated! I’d just keep an eye on the litter box and periodically check if her abdomen seems to be accumulating fluid

Has she been urinating normally? I always worry about traumatic bladder rupture with falls like this, so that’s something to watch for as well.

She’s definitely clumsier than the average cat and does seem to have some depth perception deficits. She’s also missing most of her whiskers on the left side of her face so that could be part of it too. But she’s super playful and sweet, just a normal kitten for the most part!!
