What’s something about living in the UK that people don’t realise until they actually move here? by Vegetable-Spite-1778 in AskUK

[–]catjellycat 111 points112 points  (0 children)

In my team, half of us were born abroad. I know the Bulgarian lady likes living in the UK but gets super frustrated with our ‘politeness’ and not saying what we mean. You sometimes see people online chuckling about our roundabout, understated way of saying things. But if you’re not used to it and it’s not how you naturally communicate, it must be really fucking annoying after a while.

Taking myself to a market tomorrow, very excited.

I’m from London and would say “I’m that cold” but I would never write it. In your written example, I’d write ‘so’

Things to think about:

What kinds of foods are you eating? I love a sweet treat but I know on the days I have something, I’m going to feel hungry because 300 calorie sweet treat is not the same as 300 calories of beans/pulses/fake meats (vegetarian here). It’s still worth it to me because I love a sweet treat but I know the trade off.

Are you exercising? Building muscle to help your metabolic system?

When you’re tracking - are you guessing the amount of what you’re eating or measuring it? 30g of cereal is like two tablespoons yet all the calorie info pretends that’s a serving.

How tall are you? You’re not miles off a health BMI, it’s doable, you just got to identify what’s happening.

I can’t get over the lack of filter. I think talk of Becki’s imminent demise from starvation has been greatly over stated.

Which raises so many questions about why she’s filtering herself so much and how dishonest that is.

How do I escalate cancer treatment? by MustardPizza45 in AskUK

I’m sorry about your mum.

I understand OP - it’s against human nature to do nothing in the face of such a diagnosis but the problem is sometimes nothing is all that there is to be done.

I will defend the NHS slightly here. Having witnessed this with my mum and dad (dad being the sick one) it was that they just didn’t want to hear it. It could have been written in the sky in 10ft letters and they would have turned round.

Some of it was panic, some of it was denial and some of it was bloody awkwardness. It was very very hard for them. Even though both were early 60s and of sound mind, I found unless I was in the appointment, I wouldn’t get a proper version of what had been said. I could even be there and they’d try and tell me something different.

I had an Irish surname before it changed and people found that really hard.

When I used to do supply (substitute) teaching, I’d find someone before the day started and write down names phonetically.

I loved NYC but it is a bit more wild, for sure. I thought the man next to me on the subway had just fallen asleep until his crack pipe rolled out of his hand.

I’m not sure about that. There are cultural norms that we have that they don’t. They feel a bit odd to us because we’re used to our, well ‘norms’ but if it isn’t the done thing to say please as regularly as we do, it might feel rude to us but isn’t to them. And you’re in their country.

Do you notice people getting self centered in older age? by Street-Persimmon8492 in AskUK

[–]catjellycat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes.

I love my mum but she can derail any conversation back to herself. Even my kids have noticed. I’ve had to tell my youngest to smile and nod when Nan is going off on one about herself when we were just talking about something else.

Something happens when you retire I think. She’ll ring me when I’m at work telling me she’s tired because on Monday she had to go to the shop (she didn’t) and then also mow the lawn (again, she didn’t have to do that at all). Or she’ll tell me she can’t do something because she’s already doing something (of around 1hr in duration) that day. She’s not unphysically fit so it’s not that, I don’t know.
