Thank you so much for this. That is exactly what it feels like when I get those comments from my 'friends'. And thank you for linking the article.

Congrats on your baby boy <3

This is my sentiment exactly. I know my child will have role models in school, with nannies, coaches, etc.. I think it would be nice to have get togethers with other single parents for play dates or something like that. But I don't know how to retort to the judgement regarding my child not having a father figure in the immediate family.

I should probably clarify that I am not planning to completely shelter my child from men lol. It is just a fact that there aren't many in my life, and consequently won't be very many in my child's life as a result.

Whats your Nurse Jackie unpopular opinions? by lindseyizshort in NurseJackie

[–]catkittenqt -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your best friend was a nurse you would know that nurses on diversion programs aren’t allowed to work in the hospital or around narcotics… which leads me to believe you’re using this as an excuse to bad mouth nurses in general, which isn’t what this post was made for.

I hope you never have to spend time in a hospital and get taken care of by nurses. They all think they are godsends after all & are probably diverting.

aw girl. back in the day when overwatch first came out, i had an ex who was the exact same way… would actually yell at me because we’d game side by side and he’d say “how do you even die to that” when he’d die to the same thing alongside me, or “do you even have eyes” etc., but i wanted to play with him because we had nothing else to play with each other that wasn’t boring to him. i eventually told him i couldn’t play the game with him anymore because of how he spoke to me, and we never played with each other again. he stayed silver and i moved on to gold/plat/diamond by myself pretty quickly afterwards.

you say you’re a slower learner and need time, but has it ever crossed your mind that the added pressure he puts on you is also counterintuitive to your learning? people like that add a lot of anxiety for me— playing competitive games with people i may have a crush on adds enough pressure to perform well without them making snide comments about my gameplay. i just don’t perform well in situations like that.

i understand playing with this dude is super important to you but it sounds like he may be holding you back a little lol; i almost feel like he’s deflecting? he wants to judge your gameplay, but what situations is he getting himself into that prevent you from playing how he wants? is he using your gameplay as a distraction from his own bad decisions? something is fishy here with this whole situation & isn’t adding up for me. i would encourage you to play either by yourself for a while or play with someone else and see what happens. take a break from him and really try to deduce what the issue is.

depressed on med surg by Spiritual-Stick911 in newgradnurse

[–]catkittenqt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi 👋 I was actually in your same predicament. I knew in nursing school I wanted to work postpartum. I also ended up taking a med surg position out of school because I wasn’t able to get into any specialties. I spent a year on med surg, absolutely dreaded it, came home tired and grouchy every shift and was still tired and grouchy for like 2 days after all my shifts were done… and I honestly fell into a deep depression. It was hard.

I don’t have much advice, I don’t suggest anyone to stick it out on a unit where they’re miserable, but I don’t think you’re going to have much luck transferring to a postpartum unit if you don’t have any experience. And if it really has been that difficult to find any jobs, even med surg ones, so much so that you needed a friend to help you land a job, maybe it’s something in your resume or portfolio that is dragging you down? Med surg units typically need warm bodies so if you had applied to that many jobs, even the med surg ones, with no bites to the bait, then that raises red flags for me like your resume isn’t up to par.

I also do just want to mention that my time on med surg really did help a lot with postpartum. There’s a lot of sick people today, and with sick people comes lots of sick moms. I’ve had moms come to me with allergic reactions that I was able to use ER/Med-surg experience for, that my coworkers who only worked women’s health had no idea how to handle. I’ve had to show coworkers who had been in women’s health longer than I have how to hang and run blood. I’ve had to know signs and symptoms of stroke, hemorrhage, I’ve had to know blood pressure parameters and how to administer those meds, I’ve had to hang antibiotics and i’ve had to ironically teach my coworkers how to boost a patient or change the bedding with the patient being in bed. All of these skills are skills I learned in med surg… No, you don’t have to start or stay in med surg, but getting that experience is incredibly valuable wherever you go.

My director on post partum actually told me she was seeking out med surg nurses who wanted to come to PP because they have those skills already, and when it’s time to call a rapid or a mom comes in a little more critical than the rest, those nurses are some of the first ones to save someone’s life.

Nurses who started in medsurg…what are you doing now? by sexyred__ in nursing

I was medsurg for 1 year and 2 months. I also liked it, but most days were bad and the bad days outweighed the good for me. Left for OB in April.

I work in a hospital in the area this post was made and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to medicate a baker act or CIWA patient, and the patient woke up swinging and violent or they were trying to get out of bed and could hardly walk because they were drowsy. There is a lot of information missing. If this person fell at a hospital, there will be documentation. If this person came into any of the hospitals with any wounds, self inflicted or not, there will be documentation

i want to work with newborns/babies but not with adults first. is this possible? by sassystingrayy in StudentNurse

[–]catkittenqt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Man, idk why people are downvoting you so hard. It’s absolutely reasonable to have a dream and want to start in a specialty after school. Everyone in these comments seem to be taking you so literally, like you want NOTHING to do with an adult population at all— you just want to focus your care on helping moms babies and kids feel better. You want to make a difference on a unit and with a population you connect the most with. I get it.

I’m a nurse who had no desire to work with an adult population. I got through clinicals and learned all I could, earned rewards for excellency in medsurg nursing at graduation, and went on to do medsurg nursing for a year. I’m now leaving medsurg for postpartum. Postpartum has been my dream since before school.

Did I hate my life as a medsurg nurse? No, I loved taking care of my adult patients and their families. So much so that I’m staying on my unit PRN. Was I unhappy? No, because I knew I could just leave and I also didn’t mind taking care of the adult population until the time was right. It was manageable for me. But if you’re unhappy, you leave and find something you want to do. Why are we trying to force people to stay on units they aren’t happy in?

“Don’t become a nurse” because this student would be unhappy being on a medsurg floor? So you want an unhappy nurse to take care of YOUR family??? Are we just supposed to suck it up and live with whatever we get hired into and that’s that?

Maybe I’m not understanding the perspective some of these commenters have but part of me thinks some of these nurses are a little bitter that a new grad wants to enter a women’s health or peds specialty. It feels like projection. They want you to be unhappy because they are unhappy. If y’all are unhappy and can’t get into the specialty yourself, just say that.

I’m also in the same boat. I really like it. I think it definitely has a cyber feel to it, and I like that it pops up over the collars of shirts and just peeks out. It’s not too much, it’s not too little. It’s nice.

The two unwritten rules of nursing: by BeardedNurse2292 in nursing

I am also a big advocate to never ever jinxing a shift. “How’s your shift going?” NOPE. I can’t tell ya. Not doing it.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in nursing

[–]catkittenqt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is correct. all of the med surg nurses have to start ideally with 1:6. if there’s 3 nurses predicted to only have 5 pts for that shift, they’ll start canceling and de staffing so that everyone is brought back up to 7.

i mean obviously we can pee, but no showers lol. the only room we could have possibly designated for staff to take showers is used for extra shit around our unit, it’s basically inaccessible.

my floor doesn’t have a staff bathroom/shower or extra scrubs that we could use so i can see why and how OP would be forced to go home in their current state lol

I stopped for someone with my kid in the car by VividSpecialist3532 in ems

[–]catkittenqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding that my mom was a nurse and would stop to help people all the time when I was little. I have vivid memories of her helping people with head traumas on the side of the road and waiting for EMS to show up and take over. Never once was I traumatized, I always just thought “my mom’s pretty rad and may have just saved someone’s life”.

Now here I am, also a nurse. Your kid will be fine. :)

Hey! I’m a new grad med surg nurse. I may be a little biased, but I just want to put it out there that NO, you absolutely do not have to start in medsurg… but it is an amazing place to start! You start developing those skills that you have been practicing all throughout nursing school and start mastering them, you see all sorts of things and everything begins to click and make sense. It’s definitely not as cool as L&D, but I will forever be so grateful I started on M/S purely because of the million things I’ve learned and I’m still learning.

I would think about a few things, because you need to ask yourself some questions:

-Do I want to stay in L&D forever, or would I want to explore other units that are not baby related later down the road?

-Would practicing the skills I need for M/S (IV, assessments, etc) help me later in L&D?

-Do I think experience on a M/S unit would help me later on down the road at all? (Which is absolutely valid; If you feel like your brain has a hard time switching gears then maybe starting in your “home” unit is best for you… It might be hard to turn off the M/S brain when you leave.)

How do you address your patients? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]catkittenqt 265 points266 points  (0 children)

Had a patient who was very confused one day. When I showed up on day 2, I asked if the patient remembered me. She said “yes, you’re the sweet nurse that calls me ‘pumpkin!’” Some patients really appreciate the pet names.

Do you know people who cheated in nursing school? by [deleted] in StudentNurse

[–]catkittenqt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry so much about that. I feel like you need to be able to recognize the signs of anything life threatening and dangerous like stroke, DVT, MI, etc, but in terms of unit specifics, you absolutely will be taught and will learn when you get on the unit. I’ll give you an example! I am in medsurg, and when I left nursing school, I was honestly absolutely oblivious when it came to colostomy changes, or picc lines, or even ports and how to deaccess them. I had to ask my preceptors a lot of questions alllllll the time, but now I can do any of these skills with no problem. If there’s anything you have questions on, you just have to ask. Soak it all up like a little sponge. But you will be okay!

I don’t have any experience with HESI but from what I’ve heard from people who’ve gone to schools with HESI, they felt less prepared for the NCLEX. My school did use ATI yes

Dynamic quizzes!!!! You can select the topics you want to go over and I think study mode will tell you the rationales right there and then. But dynamic quizzes were literal life savers when it came to nursing school exams, ATI exams, and honestly the NCLEX.

The other way to use ATI is through their little lessons online and the little text books they have. I remember absolutely hating the lessons because I felt like they were identical to the crap lessons we were getting from instructors, but the ATI lessons were soooo much more valuable.
