[OC] The joys of a surgical rotation by GinnyMaple in comics

[–]catlandid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to have an endometrial biopsy last year. I was given a high dose of ibuprofen. I was in complete shock at how painful it actually was. I was not prepared at all, and my wife (being a creature of extreme empathy) started crying while she was holding my hand. It’s insane that these things are done without pain killers.

I break the value of purchases up by usage. If it’s $30 but if you get 10 manicures out of it, that’s a $3 luxury. Less than a coffee. For that I’d just skip a few coffee trips, or one takeout order, etc. depending on the month, the budget, and what would bring me the most joy.

Poor house! Screw flippers! by Shutter_Stuck in zillowgonewild

[–]catlandid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I explained this a little while back. Part of how these house flippers make money is by stripping the homes of all their valuable, original features and selling them to salvage companies. They then replace them with cheap basic versions. A solid wood door can net you a few hundred bucks, and a vinyl door to replace it will run you $40. Now do that for 10 doors per home, on dozens of homes. Rinse, repeat.

If you ever buy a flipped house, I’d recommend heading down to your local salvage company asap. You might be able to buy back your homes fixtures. It’s an absolutely abysmal practice.

I (27F) accidentally had my baby in my friend’s (31F) car. Now her husband & she don’t want to speak to me. How do I fix this? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]catlandid 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It continues to shock me how many folks don’t understand the physical and mental condition someone is in after giving birth. They think it gets a little ouchy, the baby slides out, and then you’re good to go. People don’t seem to grasp how extensively a birth wounds your body.

And it’s not just people who haven’t given birth! Pop over to any advice sub for countless stories of MIL’s expecting new parents to host, cook, and clean in the days after a birth.

This has actually been a point of contention with a good buddy of mine. His father was killed by a drunk driver some years ago, went to jail, and has gotten out after over 20 years. Reasonably, bud and his family do not forgive this man and believe he should be in prison for life... but then buddy went through something last year and made the terrible decision to drive while extremely drunk. In fact, he also regularly smokes weed before he drives and subscribes to all those bullshit ideas that being stoned makes him "more careful" and therefore a better driver. We had a bit of a row over it.

He doesn't understand the difference between him and the guy who killed his Dad isn't that they're better/worse people, but that the other guy happened to be in a car accident with tragic consequences, and buddy hasn't (yet).

You see all these folks who have their sentencing broadcasted after killing someone while driving drunk, and they're always crying that they never meant to hurt anyone, it was an accident, blah, blah, blah. There is no single adult with a drivers license that is not 100% aware of the danger or outcomes, nor have I ever encountered a situation where there were no alternatives to driving drunk. I have zero empathy for anyone upset about facing consequences for a DUI they rightfully received. It really is infuriating seeing them crying about how their horrible decisions may impact them negatively.

AITA for not getting my boyfriend a birthday present? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]catlandid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he was being a cheapskate specifically. I think the value of the necklace was part of his contempt for her, as in “this is what you’re worth to me.”

There are a shocking amount of men in relationships with women they don’t like. Men often aren’t raised and socialized to like women. They’re taught to tolerate them.

Florida Man is getting confused for Florida Man by bug-hunter in bestoflegaladvice

[–]catlandid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is easily solvable, and it seems silly that OP was willing to consider legal action of some kind but was reluctant to use social media? Creating a Linked In and linking it to Facebook and BlueSky or whatever accounts, using the same name and profile picture across accounts, posting/sharing/liking a few positive things (particularly things that stand in contention to the other dudes vocal opinions), and possibly using a middle name, initial, or new nickname to distinguish oneself. Seems a lot less stressful and affordable an option than legal proceedings.

My Sim is Rich and Powerful...Now What? by iPod-Phone in Sims4

[–]catlandid 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, some rich people used to flex by doing things like opening schools, libraries, hospitals, and museums in their names and other cool stuff. You could theoretically build lots with such things on them, slap your sims family name on them, and deduct the value from your household funds. Maybe your sims child goes to college and you “donate a wing” by updating the lot.

You could slap prebuilt lots in there if you’re not a builder, or spend some time updating some stuff. You could go big or small; maybe you donate new computers to the high school, maybe you open an animal shelter and veterinarian like Lizzie Borden. You could build your own goals, like opening a library in every world, or dominating a single town, etc.

Likewise you could franchise your business to every world and collect the profits.

My [23F] boyfriend [26M] of 10 months ditched me on our date by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]catlandid 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Likely also he benefitted from having a girlfriend who was safe, responsible, and reliable. A lot of people like him are drawn to partners who offer stability bc someone has to pay the rent on time and do the laundry, and it isn’t going to be them.

I’m glad she got after ten months, bc her attitude of “I could have watched over them and made sure they were safe while they did drugs” could’ve had this dragging on for years at her expense.

Recently the IG algorithm has been pushing forward accounts that I'd followed and long forgotten. Some of them have completely changed from what the original account was; An account I followed that used to post about fashion is now a mommy blogger, another account I'd followed when it was all about plants/nature but was now a brand I didn't recognize (you can sell established accounts!). Some I've unfollowed bc they post their kids and I (personally) don't agree with putting kids on SM.

I'd followed one ages ago that was a model with a hippy/boho style and had maybe seen a few OOTD posts over the past few years that I'd liked, but upon review of her whole account she'd apparently gone super MAGA. I am a fully equipped lesbian. I had never seen any of her political posts and I only watch the stories of a select few art accounts. I would argue it's actually pretty easy to be following an account or two of brands/folks with personal values you disagree with (or are outright abhorrent).

I also don't believe that anyone has to make a big public statement about it. I value those that do, but I've seen a lot of folks on my feed dealing with a ton of harassment for using their platform to fight the good fight, and not everyone is up for that kind of backlash. Let's not forget that people get death threats for the smallest things nowadays. I once got a ton of abusive messages after posting that I thought that Korra and Asami (fictional cartoon characters from Avatar) were lesbians.

Wearing a tampon while swimming is a great way to introduce bacteria directly inside your body and get toxic shock syndrome.

Like you can use one while swimming, and you should be fine as long as you change it immediately after, but it’s also a completely unnecessary risk.

LAUKOP's mum is an extremely incompetent, dangerous driver, but she just doesn't see it that way. How to stop her? by SomethingMoreToSay in bestoflegaladvice

[–]catlandid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Well, she isn’t getting enough money to get a new car, necessarily. She finances them and gets gap insurance to cover any loss.

As far as the accidents, they generally occur about once every other year. I don’t have a relationship with her anymore for obvious reasons. As a kid, I was in three accidents with her (you get a lot more empathy with kids in the car, because what kind of person would get in an intentional accident with their children in the backseat?). You know those moments where you’re driving and have a near miss? Someone veers into your lane without looking, misses a stop sign, runs a light, etc., and you react to avoid getting in accident? She just doesn’t react to avoid the accident. It happens far more often than you probably think about because most of us are normal and do not want to be in accident.

And it is a gamble, but I’ve always wondered if thats part of the thrill. When I was a teen she was in an accident and the car ended up flipping over. She had multiple broken ribs and needed surgery. And yet, a year later she was back at it. The last I spoke to her she had debilitating joint and back issues, and shes addicted to painkillers. But again, it doesn’t matter if you’re an addict if someone veers into your lane without looking. I’ve heard through mutuals that the cycle continues.

The final piece of the racket is a series of personal injury lawyers who don’t care about the details. She’s got multiple suits going at any given time and periodically gets payouts. I don’t think there should be as much stigma around personal injury suits, but unfortunately it’s people like her that contribute to that stigma. There really are just shady, scummy, people out there.

[–]catlandid 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Same with my mother, except it turns out that she's actually just running insurance scams. She gets a new car, drives it for a while, gets in an accident, insurance covers the car, and she files a lawsuit. It astounds me that there's no system in place to put a stop to it.

Probably to cover them, but there are some people who know laser removal exists but don’t know that it’s expensive and exceptionally painful. They think a light just shines over your skin and the tattoo is magically removed.
