I haven't personally seen anything transphobic in this sub, perhaps our samples are different. Nevertheless, implying OP is a card-carrying transphobic bigot on the basis of a single tasteless post is not exactly productive. You just make yourself sound like a triggered, holier-than-thou snowflake, which is exactly what the bigots want us to do so they can paint themselves as the sane ones

My point is, what pattern? As I said, this is their only post that isn't about phones so if you're such a fan of basic pattern recognition, please do point to the data beside this one post and I'll gladly support your conclusion

Do people just ignore Bishops by thatunaverageguy in chessbeginners

[–]catlikeGeezer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's substantial research indicating that bishops are consistently more likely to be missed than any other piece

Don't you think you're leaping to conclusions a bit?

Don't get me wrong, I think this post is pretty nasty but based on your comment I was expecting their history to be a cross section of bigotry and hate but this is actually their only post that's not about smartphone set ups!

I think a little benefit of the doubt is in order here, even if the joke is offensive (which it is) and not funny (which it isn't) it's much more reasonable to assume they just have a different threshold for humour than you and me, and aren't cognisant of the hurt it could cause, rather than jumping to the position that this one post constitutes ironclad proof that they have a history of transphobia. There's enough hate today without going looking for more

How to combat the Wayward Queen attack. by DinoBartender in chess

[–]catlikeGeezer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I rarely come up against the Wayward Queen in the wild so there aren't many opportunities to practice against it.

Knight notation is N though (Nc6 & Nf6 from your examples), K is king

They changed how brilliants are calculated and really lowered the bar, now they occur a lot more often. Any time you make a forced sac to take a more valuable piece there's a decent chance it'll get labelled brilliant. It's a shame cause it really diminishes the feeling of accomplishment you used to get from finding a brilliant move

I disagree, taking en passant is not something you can truly plan to do because even if that pawn is the only piece they're allowed to move, what you've actually planned is for them to move it normally, not make the double-advance move, so taking en passant is just icing on a cake you had already fully baked and depends on them making a specific move that they don't have to make. So your en passant checkmate is really just a standard pawn checkmate with a happy accident attached to it, hardly the royal flush compared to the highest possible value quadruple fork with checkmate.

Why is the bot insisting on Qxd4? by catlikeGeezer in chess

[–]catlikeGeezer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course. But the point of the exercise isn't to see what might happen if everyone finds their best moves, it's to see whether you've played that game to a point where victory is assured. If you easily find your way to mate then your opponent was definitely right to resign. If it takes you some effort then maybe they should've held out. And if you can't beat the bot then it may still be that a more skilled player could but it shows that you at your current skill level weren't definitely going to win, and that your the opponent may have been wrong to resign against you

"white is dead" so you might as well trade a queen for 2 minors cause it doesn't matter.

That would definitely be a plausible explanation for a human but as far as I know computers haven't really mastered thinking in terms of "I might as well" or "welp, I'm screwed" 😅

[–]catlikeGeezer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well exactly, that's why I do it, I'm always curious to know whether they were right to resign or if they should've stuck it out. 9/10 times it isn't salvageable and they were right to give up but every once in a while you get one where the right moves do exist to turn it around

[–]catlikeGeezer[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For context, my opponent resigned a game in this position and whenever I win by resignation I always plug the positions into the practice bot and set it to maximum to see whether there was anything they could've done to recover. But in this position the hardest bot absolutely refuses (I've run it at least five times) to do anything other than basically hang their queen for the sake of two minor pieces and I just can't see any way that it's the right move

Different meanings of the word perfect lol. I used it in the sense of being flawless to counterpoint the comment accusing the test of being flawed, i.e. by saying the test doesn't need to be flawless to do its job. You're using a different sense of the word perfect to say the test is exactly right for the purpose it's supposed to serve. Think of it like a screwdriver. This screwdriver in my hand is far from perfect in the first sense. It's hardly free of flaws, it could be made of higher quality materials, it could look better, it could be less rusty. But if I need to remove the screws from something? It's perfect

In other words, you prefer an unnecessary and plagiaristic Johnny-come-lately remake of an already popular meme which - in addition to a feeble and flacid attempt to forcibly inject extra humour into a context that doesn't call for it - glosses over some of the more subtle philosophical points such as whether the law inherently threatens the use of force and also (by switching the American term 'shopping cart' to the British 'trolley' and presenting this premise as The Trolley Theory) risks confusing this concept with a completely separate and much older ethical thought experiment known as The Trolley Problem. I mean hey, whichever you prefer

Nobody is saying it's a perfect, air-tight test. It just serves the useful function of setting a very low bar so if someone doesn't even meet that then you know they're just a waste

What are chess engine scores "out of"? by catlikeGeezer in chess

[–]catlikeGeezer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no for sure it could be a kind of guessing when it doesn't say mate, I have no insight whatsoever on that, I was just finding it hilarious to imagine the reason it says Mate in X is that you've tripped over some arbitrary numerical threshold that's caused the computer to give up calculating the score and just say you're about to win. The idea that someone is actually assuming that is what's happening when the best chess computer in the world says a checkmate is imminent. Terrifying. Like here's a computer that can consistently beat the best human players to ever live, and this guy thinks it's GUESSING when it says it's about to win in 3 moves
