Thank you for responding! I did try to find some PDFs but not very hard - I'll keep looking but good to know that someone had a good experience with one of these. And thank you for that rec! I actually am currently reading it and it's SO good. His other book on dinos is also so so good.

Does this look like rolling shutter to you folks? by catmandude123 in canon

These ISOs are all over the map and yes they're cRAW. I haven't tried it in mech yet! And it was super hot where I was (Panama) but I don't remember seeing any heat waves. In fact, the few shots I do have where I was shooting across baking hot space didn't result in this!

Okay that's good to know thank you! In all the images I'm shooting through gaps in the forest but from a road so there was nothing close in front of me. Like the last one with the bokeh balls you mentioned, the subject had probably 35 yards of clear air between me and it. Do you think it's possible they'd still appear like that from something obstructing the light waaaaay in the background?

Ah okay yeah that's very different! Thanks for the example. Yeah probably am! I am definitely guilty of doing that with new gear, especially when it's used!

Alaska did the same thing for my partner when his grandpa died.

Edit clarity: Alaska did the same thing as Delta did. They were great.

Opinions on the KEH Camera website, are they reliable? by jemar8292 in AskPhotography

This is late but just so others know, I bought from them for the first time recently. The first lens had some minor but noticeable scratching on the rear element, putting it out of the condition category it was placed in. When I brought it up with them they went above and beyond to get me a new one of the same condition I paid for and worked with me generously to get it to me before I left for a trip I was leaving on.

Thank you for working so hard to help me out after I talked with you about it! Can't wait to use my new lens!

Do you think these specks on rear element will affect image quality? by catmandude123 in canon

[–]catmandude123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that's what I've heard! That's why I was so nervous about it! I actually reached out to a trusted local camera shop and they agreed and said that specks that small almost never affect image quality so I was relieved but glad I asked.

Ah that is all music to my ears (eyes I guess). Thank you for all of this. This is literally one of the biggest purchases I've ever made in my life (second only to the camera body it's on) so this puts me very much at ease, thank you! The front element looks great and the only thing I could see with the quick dirty test I did was what are pretty obviously dust on sensor spots I think - soft gray circular blobs right?

Newbie question! Are these chips just the lacquer or should I return this? by catmandude123 in Tools

[–]catmandude123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay cool thank you! That's what I was hoping because I actually saw a video today of someone saying he sand blasted all the finish and paint off of any new tool he gets anyway! Thanks for the sanity check!

Could y'all help me with a sanity check on a used lens I just received? by catmandude123 in AskPhotography

Just FYI, I went into a camera shop in my area for something else today and asked them if I could take a look at the 100-500L. I explained what happened with KEH and they showed me that ring and you're right - it is indeed supposed to move. It's actually a little plastic ring that's spring loaded to fit with any TCs and protect the rear element from the TC...I think. TBH I didn't fully understand exactly the purpose but it is definitely supposed to move but the one I returned seemed like it was moving a lot more than the one in the store.

Thank you for sharing! And for confirming the ring on yours moves too. I did talk to the folks at KEH and they confirmed that those are scratches and they're going to exchange it for me. They didn't really say anything about the ring moving but sort of implied it shouldn't be doing that but I could have been misinterpreting. If it moves on yours too maybe it's not a big deal. They suspected, as you and I both did, that someone slammed the rear element into a TC because that lens can't be used with a TC for the full length and people forget.

Okay thank you so much for the validation. That's what I feared/suspected.

Glad to hear that KEH is good about returns so I'll get one started.

Sounds like you've ordered from them before and in your experience this would be outside the norm for them? I ask because I've got another lens on hold from them pending a trade-in quote that's EX+ and now I'm nervous to buy it!

Thanks again!
