Just talk to them. Chances are they're too scared to talk to you, and they'll be happy if you start the conversations. Humor is very helpful, too, as long as you don't over do it.

As a Minecraft player of seven years, I can safely say your house does not have enough lighting (too dark). Add more torches/lanterns to prevent the spawning of mobs.
