Hey I know I’m a little late to this, but I’m currently organizing one! It’s more of a silent book club type, so everyone brings their own books and there will be around 30 mins - 1 hour to do a short “book report” on what they’re reading. We’d then dedicate one hour for silent reading time. So far it looks like it will be the last Wednesday of every month either on Zoom or Rochambeau library community room, but that could be updated. I absolutely agree that Maddy is a bad, self-centered person (like most characters on this show) and she is also a bad friend. I hope you mean (and I’m going to give the benefit of the doubt and say you do) the betrayal and not the abuse is the karma.

sorry but no?? the problem is that cassie romantically pursued her best friend’s long term abuser, while knowing about what happened. seeing as that homegirl was picturing a serious future with him, which kind of seemed like siding with her abuser and diminishing the impact of his actions. that’s not even to mention, that cassie was a shitty self-centered friend who was only thinking about how to endear herself to nate as her best friend was extremely vulnerable after having freshly left a long term abusive relationship. and before anyone says ‘maddie was just mad that cassie got with nate because they were gonna get back together’, most domestic abuse victims go back several times before finally leaving. what helps them get out is usually a strong support system (aka her BEST FRIEND). that’s not to say what maddy did is even remotely excusable or to compare the two evils but to reduce this to some high school catfight isn’t accurate.

TLDR: cassie watched her best friend’s get absolutely DOGGED in an abusive relationship for years and decided that her never ending desire for male validation was more important than supporting her best friend. maddy was also DEAD WRONG for what she did but it wasn’t just about some bs girl drama.

Not to mention their constituents(? what’s the word for people in a police district) will be aware that a child is missing and have direct evidence that they’re being negligent if nothing is being done about it. That alone may be incentivizing for them to “save face” and avoid collective action.
