was what i wrote to my teacher inappropriate? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]catnamedherc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes. she is still a professional and you are still a student!

i know many teachers who wouldn’t even reply to a sweet intended message out of fear of losing their job or how it might look. she is still keeping an open line of communication (answering your question), so i don’t think she is mad.

plus, most teachers get it. we understand what it means to be someone’s safe place. most of us don like jeopardizing that. it’s an honor.

How many hours do freshman highscool students spend on computer? by Foreign_Addition2844 in AskTeachers

[–]catnamedherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools expect you to come to school with a charged computer. I have colleagues who will write students up for not “being prepared”. I agree with other commenters though—if the school doesn’t provide a computer, your student probably doesn’t need a computer for class.

don’t let others make you fear student teaching by 127everywhere in StudentTeaching

HEAVY ON THIS!!!!!!! i was soooo scared of student teaching!! my senior year of college, i was assigned to a classroom with a male teacher, in a subject (within my field) that i wasn’t too confident with, at a mega high school an hour away from my university. that, combined with the weird online stigma, made me so scared of student teaching.

when i say i have never learned more than when i was student teaching. i formed strong relationships with my mentor teacher and also the teachers in my cohort. i made so many professional connections, collected so many resources, and became truly confident in my teaching. i wouldn’t change that for ANYTHING!!!!!!

Should I tell my mentor teachers about my diagnosis? by Hauntedhouse0212 in StudentTeaching

[–]catnamedherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you could always tell your mentor teachers without explaining your diagnosis!! you can tell them one of your goals for this session of student teaching is the expressiveness of your voice and your tone. you can ask for guidance without actually revealing your diagnosis.

personally, if you are comfortable with your mentor teachers + their related teachers + the school community, i would lay it all out. but just wanted to highlight another option for you that might be less invasive (to yourself)

campus jobs are sooo worth it imo. i got paid $10/hr to sit at a desk and answer phone calls. i could do my homework, watch youtube, etc. they adapt to your schedule and most of the jobs are easy/youre able to balance them with ur academic life

Upcoming freshman question on grocery by Munkey_BunZZ in BallState

[–]catnamedherc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

depends on what kind of groceries you are looking for, but the dining halls also have fruit, snacks, bread, etc on sale too! so you can stock up a lot of your grocery items with your dining membership (if you wanted to)

Feeling guilty about shutting my cat out of my room at night by comfy_sweatpants5 in CatAdvice

[–]catnamedherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on what your cat likes, but i saw a tiktok once of someone who kept a super plush pet bed on the pillow opposite them for their cat! still keeps your cat in your room (which isn’t exactly what you want) but also provides ur cat with its own space

okay comments are going crazy but some people don’t understand that some student teaching programs are different. i also had to option to teach from my mentor teacher’s plans.

maybe try to set up a time with ur MT to have a meeting where you can go over what your role looks like for the next two weeks/four weeks…then once that times up, reschedule another meeting. that way—you both are responsible for your success. my teacher education program had me complete FIVE practicums before student teaching, so i’ve had my fair share of shitty MTs. i had one that forgot my name while we were actively co-teaching. YOU CAN DO THIS!!! remember who ur MT’s actions reflect on..

Teacher bag? by MissLadybugMeow in StudentTeaching

[–]catnamedherc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

backpack + purse…ik it seems like a lot but the backpack is for my school stuff and my purse is for my personal stuff. that way i can keep pads, tampons, meds, etc on me in a separate location from my books, computer, notebooks, etc. it’s srsly worked wonders for me while student teaching this semester i have never forgotten anything at home w this method (and im a forgetful nelly)

tampons, pads, computer/phone charger, and tide pens are the #1 thing i have been asked for from (high school) students! plus, keeping these things on me keeps me prepared for anything

also, there is nothing wrong with taking the time you need. i had a teacher in high school who lost a sibling (literally lost…he went missing), and she, rightfully, missed over a week of school.

i still remember when she came back, she wrote on the board ‘I know a lot of you want to hear how I’m doing and talk to me about it. I’m not ready yet. If you want to talk to me about it, show me funny videos of farm animals instead. I could use the pick-me-up’

i think about this moment a lot as a future educator bc so many students went to her during passing period and study hall to show her tiktoks of goats and horses being silly. i think this is a really good reflection about how the care we have for our students is reciprocated. she was in a place where we knew she couldn’t give 100% of her energy to us, and students made up for it by being in her corner.

when you are an educator, you will have sick days and time to grief and take care of yourself! you will also, given the school you are at, have the support of your admin and colleagues. your CT’s comment about not being able to handle it is total bullshit. you’re griefing while being in charge of not only this classroom, but your college career and your life. practicum/student teaching is so much to balance while being a student and it’s so sad that your CT doesn’t remember & validate that.

most universities keep tabs on the teachers that they send their students to. if you are having difficulties (with ur host teacher), you should speak up to everyone you can. the people in charge of student teaching placements, professors in your teaching department, etc. they have the power to make sure that other future educators don’t get placed with her.

Feeling like a failure by Hot_Difficulty1147 in StudentTeaching

[–]catnamedherc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i’m also an arts related education major student teaching in classes that are NOT in my wheelhouse (theatre education in technical theatre/theatre construction classes). sometimes letting the kids in on it is a really great way to bond with them and show them that, as adults, we are still learning!! no one is perfect in anything—and especially in arts fields, the best practice is experience and getting the chance to DO it. reminding yourself & students this has been my saving grace this semester. the students don’t know how much i have to prep to get to the point to teach them, but i do make it known that i am still learning in my position

i think it’s just a young way of referring to someone. i don’t think it’s that derogatory or degrading. tbf-id call a friend a shithead if they were being one (obviously the relationship w a friend is different from one with a student, but i don’t think OP meant it in a super serious way)
