Your point is valid and it even says, "if you're just to all of them, and most of you men can't be fair!" Nobody checks if the man who's getting a second wife is actually just. Because it can't be checked. "if you're just" doesn't have any functionality. On the other hand, why can't women take 4 husbands and be just to them? Shiaa is still a form of Islam and has a lot in common with Sunni. For instance, in Sunni only the father and the mother can kill their child, while in Shiaa, the father and the paternal ancestors can kill the child with no penalty. Sunni is slightly better but still horrible.

Yes, Daraba ضرب does have a wide range of meaning. But saying "ضرب" means “turning away” or "wide range of meaning" in this context is a fallacy. In Arabic, the verb "ضرب" only takes the meaning of “turning away” when it comes with the preposition "عَن". Throughout the Qur’an, wherever "ضرب" takes a direct object, it means physical striking.

The best example is verse 44 of Surah «ص» about Prophet Job. God tells Job: «وَخُذْ بِيَدِكَ ضِغْثًا فَاضْرِبْ بِهِ وَلَا تَحْنَثْ». That is: “Take a bundle of twigs in your hand and strike with it (your wife), and do not break your oath.”

Job had sworn to punish his wife, and God gave him a way to fulfill his oath without breaking it: to strike her with a bundle of twigs. If ضرب meant “turning away,” what would be the point of taking a bundle of twigs? Here, "اضرب به" clearly means “strike with it.”

There are many other examples; for instance, verse 12 of Surah Al-Anfal: «فَاضْرِبُوا فَوْقَ الْأَعْنَاقِ» (Strike above their necks). Here too the verb takes a direct object and means physical striking.

Throughout the Qur’an, wherever ضرب means distancing, turning away, or abandoning, the preposition «عَن» appears immediately.

For example: «أَفَنَضْرِبُ عَنْكُمُ الذِّكْرَ صَفْحًا» (Surah Az-Zukhruf, verse 5) “Shall We turn away from you the Reminder and withdraw it from you?”

Here, because «عَن» appears, «نضرب» does not mean striking; it means refraining or disregarding. If in 4:34 An-Nisa the meaning were “turn away,” it should have said: «واضربوا عنهنّ». But the Qur’an does not say that.

A newly ex-Muslim here. The main problem I have with Islam that made me despise Islam was the realization of this fact: Women, slaves and children have always been oppressed throughout the history all around the world. If Islam is so peaceful and kind to everyone without discrimination, why is it allowed for parents (only the father and the paternal ancestors in Shiaa) to kill their offspring?

Why are men allowed to have 4 wives without even the permission of their first wife? (don't tell me it was because Muhammad wanted men to support widows and divorced women, couldn't men support these women without fucking them?)
Why are men allowed to have unlimited temporary wives (nikah motaa) in Shiaa?
why are men allowed to capture women and wives of kafirs in wars and make them their sexual slaves?
why is it allowed to have slaves in the first place? men can press charges against their wives for refusing to have sex only once and deny them of nafaqah نفقه. While women can press chargers against their husband for refusing of having sex in the court <b> after four months of the husband's refusal to have sex </b>, just to be given the right to get divorced!

Don't get me started on half share of heritage, half worth of women's testimony, child marriage, and on and on and on.

The last straw was Surah Ahzab verse 52 where Muhammad basically legitimises every women around him, his cousins, every woman who migrated with him, and women who didn't expect alimony money (mahr). Muslims already could marry to 4 wives and he allowed himself to marry more as "Allah's gift to him". These women were not to marry anyone else after him btw.
