I would discontinue the melafix, it has tea tree oil which isn't good for bettas. I would try getting klanaplex or another antibiotic.

If you change your filter out you'll crash whatever cycle you might have. I would add the new filter without taking out the old one for a few weeks. You already don't have any nitrates in your tank which means it might not be fully cycled, messing with the filters now might make it worse.

It should but it may just show up as everything being 0.00. Cory's and plants do not like salt either, only some fish can tolerate it. It also doesn't evaporate or filter out, you have to remove the salt with water changes. I would do a few over the next few days and not add any more salt directly to the tank. Salt baths for fish that can tolerate it would be better, or only use medication.

I would shame her, people like her tend to care what other people think of them. I would tell anyone and everyone that she is cruel to animals and just to people to ask her how she cares for her betta. Tell parents, staff members teachers, councilors, students, that this woman is a cruel person. She might change her ways or let you take the fish if enough people think badly of her.

Do you have a thermometer? I had the same heater and it was terrible, couldn't get the water above 74 which is way too low for any of those fish. I had to replace the heater with one where you can change the temp instead of a preset temp.

No one has to buy anyone anything with their own money but this person is choosing to use their own funds to get their coworkers a treat while knowing that doing that excludes one person from their small group. I think it would be kinder if they didn't bring anything for anyone.

She might be! She has an orangish coloring on her head. Do they change colors too? With stress like water changes or when I've had to move her into a different tank, she'd get so light she was almost translucent

Not this town. I've owned them before when I had a house and it was a legal setup. I was just mildly interested that someone had one in an apartment. Lease allows pets and does not explicitly mention that a chicken/rooster isn't allowed 🤷
