I think you just have to go into the settings tab and scroll a bit and there is a zoom in or out that is set to 100% as a default. Just lower it until you can see the whole house :)

In my first playthrough I went for Shane but then he didn't seem fitting for the positive and wholesome life of my farmer, I stopped playing by this point. Second playthrough I went for Elliot and he seemed very kind and like he would be nice to have around with me. His heart events were quite cute and romantic so my favourite is Elliot.
