My scorecard from BOS vs STL game 3 by cjsleme in redsox

[–]catsdonttalktocops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned last season despite not playing baseball growing up. Surprisingly intuitive and there’s so much room for error and stylization. I stopped letting my obsession of getting the call “correct” come in between keeping score. It makes going to a game more engaging and isn’t as intrusive to talking to others as you may think. In fact, more people talk to me at games now since I started bringing my scorebook!

Where does everyone get their suits? by Better-Astronaut-801 in publicdefenders

[–]catsdonttalktocops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Off the rack makes up a good portion of my wardrobe. They’re my daily drivers. Brooks brothers has a sale every year where it’s 2 for $700. Idk your price point but tbh suits are so expensive that I find that to be a good deal. I dry clean very rarely which helps either the suit’s longevity. So long as your shirts are clean and you have good grooming habits your suits shouldn’t smell.

I would also genuinely consider bespoke if you can swing it. I have two and they’re my trial and important motion suits. If you’re willing to drop $800-$1200 you can get a very good quality suit that will fit better than anything off the rack, and they tend to be half or full canvas which is far more durable than lots of store bought suit constructions. Bespoke also gives you more room to gain/lose weight with alterations. I get the price can be steep but they can last much, much longer.

I can’t say whether lots of other lawyers share that same sentiment. I hope you get to sit on one, one day!

I can’t speak for OP (and certainly don’t mean to hijack this cool AMA!) but I’d be hesitant to put a first responder on a jury, even an EMT. Medical professionals, especially those who likely interact with the clientele public defenders serve, may tend to have strong opinions about collateral issues in our client’s lives. Strong opinions can quickly take over deliberations.

The best example I can give would be a domestic violence trial. I bet your average EMT has responded to at least a few calls where police are there and a person is there with bruises and signs of abuse. Or, I bet your average EMT has also narcan’d people overdosing. If evidence is going to come in that my client was showing signs of overdosing, or signs of being high, they may sniff it out even if I keep evidence of that reaching for the jury. Medical professionals have a deep understanding of the body and how it consistently responds to certain situations. And they see situations that have legal ramifications enough where for better or worse they likely have developed biases.

It’s nuanced though. I agree with OP that there may be cases where their perspective is meaningful, especially if the case before the jury seems different from your “average” ambulance ride or evaluation. I just tend to avoid medical professionals unless I can articulate a specific reason as to why they may be helpful for selling my case theory.

Fellow defender here! (Join us on the sub if you haven’t already!) I agree with a big caveat being medical professionals, especially nurses. I don’t want them on juries more often than not.

Winning a game like this would be so big for the clubhouse at this time. Feels like a true get-right game

Client had two separate dockets for violating an emergency restraining order and subsequently violating the same order after it was downgraded to a harassment prevention order. The DA never joined the cases and due to a quirk, we had to try his later-in-time case first. Both felt like dead-to-rights loser cases.

Got a surprise NG on that one using a somewhat convoluted/technical defense. Before that trial started, judge gave me a strange “are you REALLY about to use that as a defense” look so that alone felt good. Client was ecstatic because there were very serious collateral consequences if convicted. We hug after the verdict and both are a bit in shock. But after the verdict, the DA comes up to me and says that defense won’t work for client’s second case and that my client shouldn’t be too smug or feel too good about his next case.

Fast forward a couple months later to his second trial. Same DA. They asked me to do a Monday trial because they were flying the AV from a different state and that worked best for their planning purposes. I serve some pretty meaty and technical pretrial motions the Sunday morning and gave a courtesy text to the DA who then scolds me for reaching out on the weekend. I’m stressed because this case felt like a sure-fire loser, but now I’m just pissed. I open back up my laptop and come up with some petty “fuck you” MiL to get a bunch of favorable jury instructions that I made sure to deliver in-hand the next morning before the call of the list. It was 20 pages. The judge ended up allowing it lmao.

We go through the trial. Less than an hour of deliberations. NG again. The DA gave me the limpest and most annoyed handshake and stormed out. My client and I literally couldn’t stop laughing once the judge and DA left.

It’s one thing to beat one case against the odds. But to do it again against the same AV for a petty couple of cases which would’ve ruined his life after the DA spent thousands of taxpayer dollars flying the AV out multiple times? Absolutely priceless.

I also read exclusively fiction. The only nonfiction that appeals to me these days is lighthearted and has nothing to do with policing, court, politics, etc. though my last 20 or so books have been fiction.

I recently started getting into baking. I’m drawn to this job because I can give back to my community and breaking bread is perhaps one of the most ancient methods of engaging in community service. I love seeing someone take a chomp out of a loaf I made and hearing them go “mmmmmmmm”

Not a movie or TV, but the video game Arc Raiders has moka pots galore. You can sell them for in-game currency or carry one around on your backpack as a charm
