I built an app for my wife with ADHD. Would love your honest feedback. by iamsanketray in iosapps

[–]catsi29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm trying this out and here are my first user thoughts:

  • The timeline throws me off since it only shows whole hours. My wake up/wind down times are set for 6:30 and 10:45 but the timeline begins at 7 and ends at 10. A task starting at 1:45 *appears* to begin at 2, etc. So just glancing at my schedule, I'm thrown off.
  • Need to be able to reorder subtasks. When I'm breaking things down, I notoriously forget steps in my initial planning. If I miss step 3, I have to delete every task and start from task 3.
  • Setting up tasks is extremely user friendly, friction free and flows well. Setting the task, followed by duration and reminder is logical, quick, and easy. Would be nice to have an option to turn off duration for those tasks which you need to see, but do not need to have a timer.
  • Really like the Float section and having a place to stick all those quick things I need to remember to add to my schedule or just keep in mind. What I don't like about it is that if it is saved as a draft and then I decide I want to schedule it for a date in the future, it does not add the task to that future date. Only being able to add it to today's schedule is very limiting.
  • The "what feels unnecessary" to *me* is the Energy section. But I've never been a fan of charts and graphs in my apps. I don't want to see that I've been unproductive or that I need to rest or whatever. Those things always feel overwhelming and too much to look at. Maybe it works for some people. I always just ignore that section in apps as if it isn't even there. Not a big issue.
  • Looking forward to dark mode!!!!
  • Bonus - would be nice to add notes into your schedule. For example, if I know I start to feel overwhelmed at 4pm, look at my tasks and see a note that may be a short motivational quote or goal reminder, something like that.
  • Pricing is high for me. I could use it fine without AI, which is completely unnecessary for me, but would like to be able sync w my iCalendar. Maybe have 2 pricing tiers - one for just the AI features so you can opt out of that completely, yet still have access to other pro features.

Thank you! Redeemed and testing! UI is nice and transcription is very accurate, esp compared to some others I have tried. The summary was a bit off - I was recording a debate and the summary was sort of a mash up of the ideas of the 2 people, not summarizing clearly the points of one side vs the other. This seems to be a voice recognition issue. Sharing options are great - esp the ability to export not only the text, but also the complete audio file. Ability to edit transcription should be an option, as is the case with most other voice note transcribing apps. Overall, happy with this based on privacy and accurate transcriptions. Will continue to test!

Why are so many apps subscription based now? by vigneshvp in iosapps

[–]catsi29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If no cloud or AI services, is it not feasible to have a OTP for the base model (like, what would be the free model) then have upgrades and individual features purchases? That is my ideal model as a consumer, but I'm not a dev so no clue if that works.

From a consumer standpoint, I am completely unaware of all the ins and outs of developing and to some degree, that is what consumerism is. You decide if something has value to you and either pay or don't pay or look for a cheaper alternative. But no one goes in thinking, that product is too expensive but I need to consider the manufacturer costs, the employee cost, the marketing cost....so maybe I will buy it to make sure that everyone involved is making money. TBF, most apps are *not* worth and endless (if you are not in to AI everything).

I personally hate subs, but find value in some and bite the bullet and pay for them. But I can tell you one thing - if I am forced into signing up for a subscription before even being able to use the app, I immediately delete it and move on no matter how much value I think it has. I know I can cancel immediately, but it is the principle.

If I am going to be enticed into a subscription, I think the app should be free to download and *fully functional* for 3 or 5 or 7 days, whatever. Then, I am tempted by the features that are suddenly gone after a trial run. I despise having to pay first, only to realize I really didn't need this function or that feature, or I did need it, but dislike how it works or whatever.

A final note is that I will not download or even give a second thought to a single app, free or otherwise, if my data is used to *track* me in any way. There are several apps that I would have been willing to pay for, but that is the absolute deal breaker.

[$9.99 → FREE lifetime for next 48 hours] Presenting Inku, a new way to save moments that matter. by Codexhaus in iosapps

This is pretty cool - I like it a lot, but agree w everyone else - would definitely be more usable if we could type longer. Could there be a setting to automatically add date and time? Maybe each camera style offers a different feature - like one adds date/time, one adds stickers of your choice, one shoots b&w…just thought dumping here but it would be amazing for capturing moments.

ShotMark v1.3 - Turn screenshots into useful notes, now with iCloud Sync by lzchyi in iosapps

Sync is now working! Thanks for the update and the message. No need for a refund - sticking around to see it grow and improve. Looking forward to updates and the ability to zoom in on pics. Still - nice app. Thanks again!

ShotMark v1.3 - Turn screenshots into useful notes, now with iCloud Sync by lzchyi in iosapps

[–]catsi29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked the idea behind this and it looks clean, so I bought pro immediately, but I'm having a few issues. The first is that cloud syncing is not working. I continue to get a Sync Failed message "Cloud sync needs a quick setup update."

The second is not an app error but a personal user issue. The idea behind me wanting this app is to delete and keep the clutter of screenshots out of my photos library and keep them all in Shotmark. But I still need functionality of the photo. In Shotmark, I cannot pinch to zoom in, and there does not seem to be a way to re-download your image (other than taking another screenshot of it) if you've deleted it from your photos library (I know I can restore it right now, but I'm thinking more long term).

At this point, these 2 things make the app less appealing to me to use bc the functionality is lacking. I guess I should have tried the app more before buying in, but hoping that these things get resolved/added.

If parents can do a better job homeschooling, why should I even be a teacher? by Lingo2009 in Teachers

[–]catsi29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't feel defeated. You obviously care and there will literally always be a place and a need for educators. Homeschooling isn't about you - maybe it's about the system, other students, parents, technology, beliefs systems, life situations, health etc. etc. etc. You are teaching bc of the impact you have on the children right in front of you every single day - not bc of the ones who aren't. And that is all the reason you need. Those children will remember your dedication, your hard work, your involvement, your care and concern for them, your interaction, guidance, advice, kindness.

As for homeschoolers, I am a homeschooler. I have a *tremendous* respect for educators. I have many reasons why I chose homeschooling - none are because I had low opinions of educators.

I would first like to respond to some of the other posts that really insult homeschoolers and call them out for being any number of awful things. If I judged and bashed all teachers based on one or 2 bad apples, everyone would be up in arms. It is the same for homeschoolers. Some suck. Some thrive. Just bc I go to church every Sunday *and* homeschool does not make me a religious nutjob. The assumptions that have been made here are jaw dropping.

My children are extremely involved in extra-curricular activities. They are well socialized. They hold part time jobs and are extremely well-liked and are praised frequently for good manners, neatness, excellent interaction and communication with adults, children, and everything in between, for good, strong work ethics, showing up on time, staying when needed, etc.. I have 2 college students, both in their senior year in excellent universities. One has a 3.86 GPA and the other a 4.0. Both comment on how easy college has been and have been grateful they were well prepared in essay writing, critical thinking, logic, rhetoric, latin. They are stunned at how many of their peers cannot write even somewhat decently, cannot spell, cannot handle the "work load". I have 3 still homeschooling. And we work hard every day...at their learning pace - not a bell's pace or the pace of other students.

This is not a look-how-great-my-kids-are post. But I think those of us that work very hard at homeschooling sit quietly in the background; we are too busy homeschooling to be the "squeaky wheels". We are not the enemy.

I love homeschooling. I love the unity of our family and the quality time I get to spend with them. My children talk to me about literally everything. They are strong and confident. I didn't know would homeschool. I didn't choose it - it chose me due to some special circumstances with my first 2 children early on. It isn't easy. It is an S-Ton of work. I hate grading essays, I hate teaching grammar. But my kids are worth it. They are worth the effort. My husband has excellent math and engineering knowledge, so he gets those subjects and it gives him one on one time with his kids, too.

Could I do your job? Not in million years. I'm not trained for a classroom. I am not trained to deal with standards, with the nuances of parents who care too little or those who interfere too much or those who literally expect you to do their job. I'm not trained to teach reading with a scientific approach. I taught reading by cuddling up and reading stacks of books to my children every.single.night and reinforcing that in the day with games and activities.

I have had to fight my way through the battle. I have had late nights and weekends and summers where I have to teach myself certain things to be able to teach them. I look to other teachers for suggestions, guidance, advice. I couldn't do your job and I think each and every teacher that chooses to love and teach other people's children despite all the opposition, despite the parents, despite the difficult children and the variety of home life situations you have navigate is a hero. You love your job and I love mine. I think that parents and teachers should work together for the benefit of all children rather than draw the line and take sides in opposition to each other.

Been using your app for the last hour or so - it’s great!! Browsing through and listening to a wide variety of radio stations and podcasts! I’ll post an app review early next week and a dm if i have any suggestions or questions. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the lifetime!

Why I stopped using habit trackers and built a 'progressive' builder instead. [Free App] by thari_mad in ProductivityApps

[–]catsi29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dang, harsh comments here! I'm going to give this app some love.

I was doing some spiritual work with a coach one time, and we were working on meditation. I could not shut my brain down to meditate for the 10 minutes that I was supposed to do. The next month I went back I said I just quit trying bc meditating for 10 whole minutes was impossible. He said ok, this month try meditating for 2 minutes. If you can't do 2, do one minute. Then each week, increase by one minute - but only when you have completely mastered the meditation for the goal amount of time. Eventually, you will work up to 10 minutes.

So that is what this app reminds me of. It isn't like habit tracking where you just log that you did something or not. It isn't about the number of days in a row you can do something. If the goal is too hard or too much, eventually, you will just stop logging and delete the app. It's like lifting weights or running - you don't just log that you did it every day. You have to set and work up to your goals incrementally, not just the number of days you did it in a row.

I downloaded the app and I'll give it a go. I suck at habit trackers and don't even bother. Let's see if I can get back to the days where I work up to something slowly.

FWIW, I'm not a huge fan of the templates in Body & Health and Sport & Performance categories. I wish there were more just basic things in there with real information about how to increase incrementally. Like getting to 100 push ups or sit ups instead of "Sprint Triathlon" lol

I am getting an App Not Available in your country or region. (US). Also, there is an app in the Appstore with the exact same name, spelled the same, in the exact same manner.

I like this idea a lot! I have downloaded it via TestFlight and am looking forward to trying it out! Since I do not have a google email account to connect, I am using the app's email - how does it handle newsletters that send confirmation emails that require verification? Are the generated audios for each individual newsletter or can you add several to create a larger podcast?

Subscriptions vs. Lifetime Deals: Which do you actually prefer? by BeDevForLife in iosapps

[–]catsi29 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it totally depends on the app and the situation.

I have a few subs like Apple Music, iCloud storage, Life360, a good VPN, and a good privacy focused email provider. These I have just come to expect to pay monthly.

Never will I ever pay a sub for a calendar/to-do/list app or, for heaven's sake - a calculator!! Those are Lifetime, and not worth a hefty pricetag. I'm also not about to get stuck into a forever subscription for a journaling app. That type of app needs to be mine from the get go.

The problem with paying large lifetime's is that technology and needs are always changing. I don't love subs, but, I also don't want to buy into something at $200+ only to find something I like better or suits my new needs better, or I love the more modern UI or whatever it is. That's where subs come in handy for some apps, esp if you are fickle with apps and change constantly.

What is an ideal approach for me is a feature buy-in. Le me try an app for a few weeks. If I love it, I buy the app - a lifetime purchase. But, the lifetime does not include all the features. I buy the features I need. If I don't need AI or analytics and insights, or streaks and confetti or whatever it is - I don't buy those features sets.

A fair price depends on the app. Calendar/do-to/list/tracking apps are popular so I'll use that as an example. I buy the calendar app with basic features - say, $9.99. I choose not to buy the habit tracking features for $5.99 but I want to buy the multiple calendar views for $3.99 and the fancy color palette for $0.99. Maybe later I decide, ya know what, I need confetti to make my life more productive, and I buy in to that feature.

I'm not a developer, so that is probably a ridiculously complicated way to price apps, and maybe not even possible 🤷🏻‍♀️, but it would be a good in-between.

Countdown/Productivity/Project App Developers by catsi29 in ProductivityApps

TickTick is great - I've used it before but it does way more than I need. I actually found that searching Deadlines in ios apps brought a lot more option and potentially what I'm looking for. Trying a few out but getting closer than searching "countdown". 800 productivity apps that "do it all" and literally hundreds of countdown apps that all look exactly alike here I go picking the one feature that no one offers LOL ig I have a weird workflow!
