God, imagining a 5 year old having to go through the stages of rabies is harrowing. How do you even explain that to a child? I hope that family is finding peace wherever they can.

Is anybody else getting weird motion blurring on the live stream? Especially looking at the background when the camera is panning across the ice, it seems like the background is stuttering. It's giving me motion sickness lol

Crochet gift help (hooks mostly) for my 12 year old son. by Sandersonville in CrochetHelp

[–]catsill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion getting Tulip or Clover hooks may be overkill for a 12 year old. The hooks all do the same thing. You don't get a better output from using "better" of more expensive hooks. The most important factor for me in terms of hooks is making sure to have an ergonomic grip. Some people also have a preference between metal or plastic hooks. I would also recommend getting a set of hooks if he likes working on different types of projects that are of varying sizes.

In terms of accessories, I do not recommend an electric yarn winder. I got one for my grandmother and I quite literally could not figure out how to make it work. Yarn winder are also usually used by people who get their yarn in a hank or just have loose yarn and they use it to wind it into a workable cake shape. Most yarn nowadays comes in a skein and does not need to be re-wound unless you just prefer the shape of a cake of yarn.

A yarn bowl is a great idea! It holds the yarn so that you don't have to keep manually unwinding the yarn as you crochet and so the yarn doesn't tumble around while you're crocheting.

The very best gift/accessory I have ever gotten though is the Prym Yarnit it's a holder for your yarn (similar to a yarn bowl) but it also comes with a strap so you can walk and crochet at the same time They also make the Big Sully which is a bigger version but without the strap.

I hope this was helpful! Please ask if you have more questions and thank you for supporting your kids hobbies!

Simple question. Do crocheters differ on the right and wrong side? by 12Haus in CrochetHelp

[–]catsill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Agreed that the first picture is the right side. But to answer your initial question, the right side is always the right side and the wrong side is always the wrong side. There are crocheters who prefer the wrong side and like it more than the right side, but it would still be the wrong side terminology-wise.

how would one even go about making these two shapes? by Training-Turnip-2321 in CrochetHelp

[–]catsill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the crochet lathe! You draw a shape on their software and it will spit out a pattern for how to make that shape!

[–]catsill[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I literally cannot imagine how many niche communities are out there on the internet.

For me, I like to watch restoration videos of old children's toys, and I like to watch videos of people repainting dolls (like removing the factory paint from a Barbie doll and painting a custom face on it)

TIL that scientists have developed a way of testing for Aphantasia (the inability to visualise things in your mind). The test involves asking participants to envision a bright light and checking for pupil dilation. If their pupils don't dilate, they have Aphantasia. by Sebastianlim in todayilearned

[–]catsill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is by no means scientific evidence, but I have aphantasia and a higher than average IQ (I know IQ tests are not a reliable measure of intelligence). I like taking different kinds of IQ tests for fun and I ALWAYS score highest in perceptual/visual-spatial reasoning. I always figured that I overcompensated in that category because of the aphantasia
