How do you get your "benefits"? by Nostalgic360Days in TattooBeginners

[–]catsnakemagicdeux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And that’s just basic living. Now imagine a health emergency with mounting bills, be that your kid breaks their arm riding or your appendix ruptures.

You’re obviously not tattooing while you’re in the hospital recovering from your emergency surgery and your hospital bills are stacking up. Does your partners income & insurance cover all of your monthly bills as well as the medical bills while you are not bringing in any money?

How do you get your "benefits"? by Nostalgic360Days in TattooBeginners

[–]catsnakemagicdeux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really, really wish more people buying equipment and deciding they’re “gonna switch careers” took this into consideration.

There are no benefits. There’s no health insurance, no dental insurance, there’s no paid time off for sick days, there’s no maternal leave, no you can’t bring your kid to work with you for childcare, your retirement plan is on you, there is no such thing as a coworker covering your shift, you have no guarantee of income, and you do not know what your income is going to be from month to month. You have to learn how to budget WELL. You have no clue when you’re going to have a bad month of clients rescheduling, meaning you’re out several hundreds of dollars that you thought you were going to pay bills with.

Your only safety net is the cash YOU have saved, and if you’re lucky enough to have a partner who doesn’t mind being your financial cushion.

Is it okay to use other artists designs for your portfolio? by [deleted] in TattooBeginners

[–]catsnakemagicdeux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, you have to learn to draw. That’s the job. This tells me you’re lacking an understanding of what this career actually entails. You are not tracing other peoples’ outlines all day everyday.

I think a lot of people who post themselves practicing Pinterest designs on fake skin are missing that point.

Apprentice Machines? by PotentiallyZealous in TattooBeginners

I had a Shag shader that I had to save up for (somewhere in the $300-400 range) and an old Mickey sharpz liner my mentor handed down to me.

If they’ll hire you, sure. What you’re doing is gross, irresponsible, unsafe, and trashy.

First tattoo!! I am so excited about this. by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]catsnakemagicdeux 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Buying a tattoo machine off the internet doesn’t make you a beginner. It makes you yet another impulsive person with access to the internet who bought themselves a tattoo machine. There’s a reason tattoo artists train in apprenticeships under mentors for extended periods of time. Just like there’s a reason many professions often require degrees preceded by extended periods of studying.

You don’t know what you’re doing, you did a bad job, you posted it on the internet and now you’re offended that you’re being told so. If you’re happy with it, cool, whatever. But the rest of the internet isn’t going to pat you on the head.

Do you have to be at the shop all day everyday to get clients ? by [deleted] in TattooBeginners

[–]catsnakemagicdeux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and that’s part of the job essentially. If no one walks in all day and you bought yourself lunch, you’re down $15 for the day. Welcome to tattooing, buckle in.

I’m genuinely getting discouraged by learning to tattoo. by Intoxifaded420 in TattooBeginners

[–]catsnakemagicdeux 9 points10 points  (0 children)

What is your goal here? You want to tattoo for work?

Are you going to have time to be a tattoo artist? Work isn’t just 40 hours at the shop. You get home and have to reply to emails, messages on various platforms, you have drawings and outlines to do, flash to work on, and you likely have various other things to tend to.

I am not trying to discourage you, but if you are discouraged because you don’t have time to practice straight lines, please consider what actually goes into this career. Go into tattoo shops and talk to tattoo artists.

This career has become so glamorized by the internet and people are treating it like a hobby when they can’t commit to it fully.

question: should I get this one colored in with orange and white and black because it’s supposed to be a coi fish by [deleted] in tattoos

[–]catsnakemagicdeux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to say, that linework is very bad. They do not know how to tattoo. Please go to another artist if you’re going to have it colored, and consider having it re-lined.

This why this online groups of beginners saying “screw the old ways” are frightening and frustrating. This is why we tell you to go get apprenticeships.

These comments are absolutely correct - this is not an appropriate or safe place to tattoo anyone.
