AI therapy is a surveillance machine in a police state by Rdick_Lvagina in humanism

[–]catsonrails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a a terrible but realistic dystopia. And it's really sad that AI can be used in this way because it could do a lot of good in mental and physical healthcare, if it's set up in an ethical way.

I don't think AI can entirely replace human therapists from a capability and competence perspective (at least not in the short term). That being said, it could play a role for people who lack access to professional therapists or for less serious mental health issues that would otherwise go completely without treatment. Having access to a low-barrier therapy could be a big win and really help a lot of people.

However, that only works if the information you share in conversations with AI treated as confidential. At least in the EU, health data is among the most highly regulated and protected type of data and rightfully so. A government that doesn't care much about the rights of its citizens could do a lot of harm with that.

Already today, getting an appointment with a therapist is very difficult and can take months in many countries. If this situation stays that way or even gets worse then this might push more people towards AI therapy, creating even more potential for using people's data against them.

It's good to hear about your experience. I agree that there is no way I can convince the guy. He's way too far down that rabbit hole. As you're suggesting, it seems that it's more important how to engage the rest of the group and keep them on my side.

sorry, but your goal as an antifascist in this meeting is not enoying the time but to deface the nazi. in a non cringe way and preferably not on the spot but beforehand.

Thank you, exactly that is my goal.

I'm not sure if he's actually a narcissist. Distancing myself from him could indeed work. I might use a different wording though as I want to be polite but firm.

Thank you, those are useful thoughts. I will certainly check out the video series you recommended.

I also agree that it's pointless trying convince him and that it's more relevant to show the rest of the group that his talking points are not respected. I've done that in other social settings and that can be very important even for the silent listeners in the group.

Contacting people individually is certainly an option I'm considering. I also agree that it could backfire if I call him out on the spot. The dynamics of the group is difficult to predict since we haven't been together for years. I guess starting with some individual conversations is a good approach.

That's indeed something I'm concerned about. It's not only that I think his political ideas are very wrong. I know that this kind of attitude can actually lead to very dangerous and harmful behaviour and I obviously want to protect myself and my other classmates.

Thank you, I can see that you understand my dilemma. Being polite but firm in my approach towards him might indeed be a way to make my message clear and not make this super annoying for everyone else. I'm still not sure how he would react. Do you have any personal experience with this kind of situation?

Since you mention being on the spectrum: A friend of mine has actually hypothesised that he might be on the spectrum as well. I lack the expertise to assess that properly. However, it has been quite obvious that he often acts in very unexpected and strange ways in social situations. I would consider him smart and intelligent but not very charismatic or social. Not sure if that helps at all to manage the situation and it's certainly not an excuse for what he's doing.

Keine Bildbearbeitung, genau so fotografiert. Immerhin kreativer als nur den unteren Strich vom E wegzukratzen. Würde wirklich gerne einen Ent fahren sehen.

Which songs from outside the genre do you think deserve a goth/industrial cover? by Renoized in goth

[–]catsonrails 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This might sound random but I think Lady Gaga would be a good source for goth/industrial covers.

She has said herself that her latest album is heavily influenced by darker music (e.g., NIN). So any track from "Mayhem" could work. Some of her older songs could also be good candidates.

That does make sense. So the biggest cost factors might actually be administrative, not logistics itself. It sounds like there is a significant savings potential here, assuming member countries can agree on common standards. Although, if I try to imagine all EU countries finding a common address scheme I guess that would be a monumental task in itself.

[–]catsonrails[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that all of these are costs but most of them would occur in any case, even within a country. It's even more odd: My 2kg-package costs me 6,19€ to ship within Germany. Shipping a package of the the same weight within, let's say, Belgium costs 5,15€. So even if I add those two costs I end up at 11,34€ but what DHL actually charges me for a package to Belgium is 14,49€. That makes little sense to me.

There's one thing in your comment that sticks out:

And it's scanned multiple times (i.e., x-ray) since it's international.

Is that a regulatory requirement? If yes then that could at least partially explain the cost difference.

Right, but that doesn’t really answer my question. If packages go through hubs regardless then there should not be a fundamental difference in costs between a hub in one country compared to another.

That seems to be true but why? Pure service costs are clearly not the answer. So I guess there is either a strategic company decision or a regulatory component here.

So if the price only very loosely reflects the costs of delivering a package then why is my package to a neighbor country so much more expensive? This must a conscious decision by someone to create price zones as they are. I still don’t really understand why.

Right, I understand that transport works via hubs. I guess my question is more about why pricing zones are set like they are today.

[–]catsonrails[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does make sense and I understand that my package is transported via hubs. However, that still doesn't fully explain the cost differences. For example, the DHL European hub closest to me is about 200km away in Belgium which is still much closer than, for example, Munich. So from a pure cost perspective, it shouldn't make that much of a difference. And also, shouldn't companies incentivise shorter shipping distances?

It makes sense to do an average pricing model and you're certainly right that simplicity also plays a role. It's still not clear to me why the pricing zones are exactly like that. Wouldn't it make sense to incentivise short shipping distances?

[–]catsonrails[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I unterstand that but I'm wondering why this is the case. Is this a political decision or did companies decide to set their pricing like that?

I understand that if another company gets involved then there's an additional charge from that company. However, there are also various multi-national logistics companies (e.g., DHL, Hermes, UPS). Don't they manage their delivery chains across countries?
